Re: Project Charity Case

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. I tried to get a sound clip today of the new exhaust, but the digital camera I am using is better for pictures and not sound. I may try again later in the week.

Super work on the new exhaust. You saved some serious $$ doing it yourself. Bet you got a few good burns out of the deal.

Wow this is a great build, love the way you fixed the rust and repaired it but yet the exterior looks completely original and patinaed!

Re: Project Charity Case

Thanks Geoff...you are way too nice. I was just thinking that you have ridden in my truck several times now and I haven't experienced the Mistress from the passenger's seat. I need to bum a ride off you the next time I am near your house!

327? What are you talking about? The valve cover decal says "307".

It must be a really rare 307, because it is the only one I have seen that is missing accessories holes in the heads.

Re: Project Charity Case

I haven't done much to this truck except drive it lately, but I HAD to work on it this week and thought I would pass along what I found.

Over the last month I have heard a slight "ticking" noise while moderately accelerating. It was occurring in both drive and reverse. I had looked the truck over, but didn't find anything and concluded that it was a parking brake cable or speedometer cable slapping the frame.

Well, last Saturday I hopped in the truck and as I was pulling out of the driveway I heard, "tick, tick, tick, pop, rattle, rattle". I pulled back in the driveway to find the carrier bearing broken off from the frame and the driveshaft laying in the crossmember. After looking at it closer, I am certain that the 6" drop on the rear of the truck was forcing the driveshaft into the carrier bearing and it eventually ripped the bearing housing apart. I pulled the driveshaft last Sunday and this is what it looked like:

So, I decided to have a one piece shaft made. I took some measurements and dropped off my old driveshaft at a local shop on Monday. I picked up a new one piece driveshaft on Thursday. Here is what it looked like when I picked it up:

...and here it is after it was painted:

The new driveshaft is 59 3/8" from center of u-joint to center of u-joint, 3.5" in diameter and was $320. When I tried to install it, I found that the bracket for the carrier bearing interfered with the new shaft. I ground the rivets off and removed the bracket. The new driveshaft fit perfect after that. I have not had a chance to test drive it, but I don't expect there to be any issues. Cheers!
