Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

alrighty.

so.

went parts shopping today. wooO!

my spark plug wire looms came in, and i'm happy with the way they hold my plug wires off the headers. yes.

i also picked up a manual choke conversion kit, so i don't have to deal with that ineffective auto choke. atleast then i know if the choke is open, or closed, or what not.

so. pretty much that.

also got 5 quarts of oil, along with a canister filter,a fter the parts guy told me that a 307 wasn't the original engine, and it should have a spin-on filter. yup. gotta love people who know what they're talking about.

and thats where she stands tonight.

let's hear it!

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

a pre-pic update!

my dad works at an auto salvage yard, and brought home 2 HEI's for the truck. . that should work out nicely for waking up the 307. along with making it easier to hook a tach up. haha.

alright. i'm gonna head out to the garage, change the oil, and start on bolting the front end up.

i'll take pics when i get something done.

back in a bit!

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

alright. as promised...pics!

i drilled holes for the emblems, and got that along with the front trim on.

and, the oil change went...well. not well. first i didn't get the gasket o-ring in all the way. so, she leaked a bit. then, i took it off, put it on again, put it in crooked or something. that time, it looked like i drained the oil without a pan. yeah. not good. my Dad got home, and put it in right. hah.

needless to say, i'm in need of more oil dry now.

i'm going to forgo bolting the front end on for a few days. it'll make stabbing the HEI in alot easier. so, tomorrow i plan on putting the rear bumper on.

i'll keep you all posted!

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

well, i'd like to apologize for my lack of updating as of late.

today was opening day of deer season, so, i spent this morning sitting in the woods, freezing. lol. needless to say, i didn't see anything.

however, Dad and I got the HEI stabbed in.

tomorrow we're going to adjust the timing a bit, since it's a bit off, and put some new plug wires that we had laying around on it. we already notice no fading around 4k, so, w00t to not having points float anymore.

and i just came in from playing with the driver side fender and inner fender.

boy, do i wish i would've been a little more precise when i fixed these 2 years ago. haha.

i have a few things to tweak, if you will, and it should be good to go, tho.

and thats where she stands right now.

let's hear it!

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

be sure not to use your original hot wire to the HEI. You need a good solid 12 volts and your original Coil wire doesn't have it. Gettin there though...good luck

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Clemson -

I've been slakcing, i'll admit. haha. we barely broke 30 degrees today, so wrenches were a bit chilly to hang on to. but thats ok. haha, i did it anyway. I almost wish i could find the sticker i saw at school last year, "atleast mine's paid for". it was on a primer grey ford ranger with a flat bed. ick. but, i liked the concept nonetheless. haha.

67 C-30 -
me either! i'm hoping to have it done, or atleast on the road, in about a week. i may bring her out to see some sun on turkey day. slip her a drumstick, make her feel like family, ya know.

Mike -
yup. we ran a wire straight from the battery to the HEI. just held it on the terminal while it got cranked over to fire it up, to make sure we had it all set up right. lol. we're going to wire it in proper tomorrow, i think. pending the weather, of course. .

thanks again guys! as always, your comments keep me motivated.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

alright!

i have the rest of the week off, so, i have some reallllly high hopes.

i bolted the driver fender back on, and have a few inner fender bolts to go in yet. then the passenger side should go easier, and the hood. and thats it.

also put my the mirrors on.

kinda looks like she has ears. .

and put new plugs in, gapped to 45, along with some new wires that dad had left over.

and thats where she stands right now.

i COULD go out tonight some more. but. it's cold. and. well, i don't feel like it right now. haha. tomorrow, despite being Thanksgiving, i plan on getting out there a bit before putting her out in the sun. i also am going to try and fill my tag for deer season a bit, but, i'm not worried about it. haha.

and thats about.

let's hear it guys!
she's almost ready!

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

ok...ok...

i'll get right on it! tomorrow. .

the plan is to have it on the road to drive to my cousin's wedding, on Dec 1. and, for some odd reason, i think i might make it!

my dad has tomorrow and friday off, so, that means we can take a look at the brakes, and see if they're in roadworthy stopping condition.

and after that, it's just righty tighty, lefty loosey.

i'm kinda excited, in case you didn't notice. .

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

alright!

well, i brought the truck outside tomorrow, so she could work on her tan.

and no. unfortunately, i didn't take any pics.

but! we did time it. tomorrow, we pull the dizzy again, move it a notch over, so we can get it advanced a couple degrees.

also wired the HEI up correctly, as in..no more alligator clamp to the battery. lol. that was just to make sure we got the wires right. tomorrow we'll splice in the 30 inline fuse, and get that all taken care of.

and..check the brakes. then, it's off to the races, if the brakes will do for now, for me to get the front end bolted on.

and thats where she stands now.

i've been running an accumulated total for the truck, and..well. i'll get that typed up, and show you all what i've spent. . i'm rather happy with it, lol.

update:

running total!

100 - truck.
40 - welding wire.
20 - cutting wheels.
20 - bondo, rust converter, undercoating.
30 - metal to metal, seam sealer.
45 - paint, primer, thinner.
175 - LMC parts.
25 - reducers, collectors, header bolts.
40 - headers.
20 - hub caps.
35 - exhaust pipe.
20 - random misc.
7 - exhaust gaskets.
10 - exhaust hangers.
6 - bondo.
20 - welding wire.
12 - cutting wheels.
10 - insulation.
7 - black paint.
2 - caulk.
20 - paint gun.
10 - water filter for gun.
5 - paint pens.
15 - spark plug wire loom.
12 - bolts, spray adhesive.
15 - choke conversion.
40 - tires (235-75).
13 - spark plugs.
20 - HEI.

TOTAL: 794.

expected costs:

112 - registration.
55 - tire mounting, balancing, valve stems.

expected total: 961.

so. if my calculations and such are correct. i JUST might keep it under a grand.

pretty? no.
correct? thats questionable.
solid? well. it's metal. so yeah.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Well, once again, no pics.

today, aside from splitting wood, i dabbled a bit with the ol' girl.

i adjusted the driver side fender, so the door doesn't catch the fender anymore, and have that lovely "ka-TUNK" sound.

i also started to bolt the passenger side fender and inner fender on, but my hands got too cold, so i decided to stop there.

20 degrees + bare hands + cold wrenches = come inside. for the most part. haha.

i'll be sure to take pics tomorrow, don't worry. i plan on getting as much done as possible, and stop this whole lazy "i'm cold" buiness.

and thats where she stands now. almost time to go show off the rejuvenated old girl.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

She's getting close all.

today, i all but finished getting the driver side inner fender bolted on, i have one pesky little bolt left.

i also bolted the passenger fender on.

i have a few bolts left on the passenger inner fender as well, but those seem to be lining up pretty nice.

we also did a quick front brake check today. jacked up each side one at a time, spun the tire, tapped the brakes, and it stopped. like..NOW.

so, i'm happy about that.

tomorrow, since i have a long day of classes, i doubt i'll get anything done. however, i'm going to pick up an extra set of jack stands, for tuesday when i go to get my tires mounted, (and the front end of my DD aligned).

aside from that, i just have some bolting on to do. after the fender, it's cowl, hood, front bumper and rear. clip off the side pipes flush with the box. and...yeah. thats about it.

getting there. wooO!

let's hear it!

-Sam.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

drman -

7k?? man...you have to remember. this is just to get her on the road. haha. my fixes are sometimes..umm...subpar. yup. c'mon, i'm 20, in college. i just want a truck.

Mike -

in all my years, i honestly haven't seen an Oliver around these parts. Most everyone runs Farmalls (wooO! I Bleed Red.) and a few John Deeres. and, well, i just refuse to associate with Deeres. call my brand loyal, but tractor brands go deeper than auto's, in my opinion.

lets not forget the argument i got into one day at school with first a fellow student, and then a professor. oo boy. .

thanks for the kind words guys. i might have her liscenced and on the road by saturday, if all goes well.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

well, unfortunately i couldn't get anything much done today. my car needed to be aligned more than the trucks tires needed to be mounted and worked on.

but!

i did take some pics, while i had her out bathing in the sun in our lovely 12 degree weather.

and thats about it. lol. nothing major. i hope to work on it more thursday and friday, and see about getting her bolted together.

let's hear it!
