Re: New Rear Brakes
Vernski:
The 1000 series GMC trucks all used a 10 bolt Dana 44 rear end with leaf springs. If you need drums in 50 years, you might check the part numbers listed in the attached. I had the same trouble when I started on my 1966 1000 series GMC fenderside. Regards, Steve New Orleans http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php?p=3399195 |

Re: Historical/This I know/60-66 Model Changes
Someting I always wanted to know:
Why does the new model year start in September of the previous year? answer: In the early days of automobiling in America, open cars and poor travel conditions precluded winter motoring. Manufacturers displayed samples at the winter auto shows and took orders for spring and summer delivery.

Vernski:
In changing your rear end ratio, you have to order parts for a Dana 44. They were very popular rear ends, but they are different than the Chevies used. The Dana 44 is a 10 bolt rear vs. the Chevies that were 12. Regards, Steve New Orleans |

Re: Historical/This I know/60-66 Model Changes
Hi Vernski, if/when you decide to change ratios bear in mind there is a carrier break between 3.73 and 3.92. Anything 3.92 and lower (4.09, 4.27, 4.56) will require the same carrier. If you want a more highway friendly gear 2.70-3.73 you'll need the other carrier. They both fit in the same case, so you can switch up and down and still keep the same axle housing.
These are very popular and available from many applications including Jeeps, some later model 4 wheel drive Chevys, and a lot of Ford trucks. When I switched from my original 3.92 to a 3.08, they used the gear set and carrier from the front end of a Chevy Blazer. I subsequently went back to 4.09 gears and had to change the carrier again. There are a lot of aftermarket gear sets available but the OEM gears are generally the quietest and easiest to set up. Also, fyi - at least for 1960 the GMC 1/2 short step model came with the Dana 44 and coil springs. This might prove helpful for someone wanting a Dana 44 in a same year Chevy truck. |

Re: Historical/This I know/60-66 Model Changes
I had the same issue I had a factory rearend that came out as a 3.92 and I switched it over to a 3.23 MADE a world of differance. The only thing I need to do now is get a new speedo gear from Jim Carters.

Re: Historical/This I know/60-66 Model Changes
OK, so tell me this! What determined the sideview mirrors for the models? Were those options? Some have the standard stem and square/circle, some were the work/farm verticle rectangle, and I see others with full on towing mirrors.
Is the vast variety purely from people getting creative on their own or did GM actually put out all these mirror options? |

They look like they are off of a Ford Ranger. There was one parked beside me today at work. Looked identical to those less the center cap.

Re: Historical/This I know/60-66 Model Changes
Quote:
I don't think they to many options in those years. What you probably see the most on these trucks maybe the West Coast Mirrors. Towing mirrors. People put all kinds of after marked mirrors or just get some off another brand of truck and or just later year Chevy/GMC truck. I think they were just one or maybe two options. There are some fellars on here that up to par on this. I am still learning myself.

thx. Looks simular yea. Must decide if i'm going to put original rims for myn or I leave this ones on it. They are not bad looking, but I want to make them red with ww tires, don't know if that will look good on this rims. Going to sand one and powder coat him red to see if it's looking ok???

I think your truck would look good with Smoothies.
Also go to the search above and search the forum for wheel picture threads so you can get an idea of what you like or not. There are a few that are on here.
