Re: Project Cheap Thrills!

Sounds like fun... ( saying that sarcastically because I know how tedious body work is...) At least it'll save some for other parts on the truck And you'll develop another skill set...

Yup! I started just after I signed on. The budget isn't my choice but I work with what I have!

Jonathan, your phone should be ringing in a minute.

I fought with the 68 this summer and haven't touched the "Old Man" until today. I stuck the battery back in it today and fired it up again. A little prime of gas down the float bowl vent tube and it fired up in one revolution of the crank! he likes to go! I've gotta make an attempt to make it a handsome dude before the EAST COAST C10 THROWDOWN happening October 13th at my dealership!

Re: Project Cheap Thrills!

I haven't updated my build thread in forever! I guess now is a good time to bring it TTT. I barely touched it all summer. The carb was ok after a rebuild but soon enough it started to go down hill and I determined it was just to worn out to do anything with. That mixed with other life events made me moth ball it for a while. I did add power steering, a front sway bar, shocks and a nice alignment to it though.
Now I'm sanding off the six layers off paint, pulling dents, filling holes and just trying to make it look better. I will be buying new fenders, a radiator support, several other misc. pieces and having the door re-skinned. I planned to sand down the bedsides and make them look nicer to match the new sheet metal but none of the local paint suppliers offer anything less than gallon sized cans of epoxy primer. There is a question as to when I'll be able to get my new sheet metal so I figured between a gallon of e-primer and a gallon of Rage I may as well go around the entire truck and sort it out to use up the materials. Once the bodywork is sorted and the final coat of e-primer is laid I'll replace the C10 fender badges, door handles, grill hoops and headlight bezels. After all that I'm going to swap over to front discs and dropped spindles. I will be looking for a set of the 22" steel transport wheels to top it all off. Lets see what happens over the winter and how well I can stick to the plan.

Seems Ive gotta resize my pictures. I'll post some in a few.

I'm going to push this bad boy into the low buck build threads. It's a cool truck and really great story.

Re: Project Cheap Thrills!

Let me try to get some of these pics up. The site wouldn't let me last time. Nope it let me do one pic. I have some on my phone too. I'll email them to myself and try to get those up too. I'll try to update some more of where I am too.

Re: Project Cheap Thrills!

Here is some pics of inspiration and where I am now. I like to think of this as Stage 2. It will have a different look before Spring. I'm working with VA72C10, Truckseats, CRSweet91, Eldogg and several other people to get things done. I am still going in a Resto-Mod direction and I'm hoping this thing is gonna turn out sick!

Re: Project Cheap Thrills!

Still having upload problems with the pics. The first pic is not mine but it is inspiration for the wheels. I'm going to be making my own set of "Delmo Specials". I've started to delve into the more complicated bodywork. I did a little exploratory surgery to see what was underneath. Uugghh! Its nasty! What a project to pick as my first bodywork venture!

Re: Project Cheap Thrills!

Ok. So I guess this thing works now so I can post pics. Heres several of how the truck gets to stay inside and what the passenger side looked like after most of the paint and bondo were sanded out. I originally started pulling the gouge down the side out with a Stud gun, Steck Stud Lever and the slide hammer that came in the HF Stud gun kit. When I checked my progress with a four foot level I discovered a big low down the entire bed side. I once again attempted to get with my body shop buddies to see if they could do several big pulls I needed. Again, no go. Time to adapt and overcome. More on that in a minute.
The last pic is of the original 506 Medium Blue Poly that was mildly shined up with some compound. Eventually the truck will go back this color.

Re: Project Cheap Thrills!

So I looked around for a tool that was strong enough to do big pulls. I settled on a Mo-Clamp Tac-N-pull set up that set me back $100. I used a B.A. ratchet strap attached to my lift for anchoring. Simply enough, I tacked on the plates, slid on the Mo-Clamp, set a little tension in the strap, lightly heated the panel to relax it and continued to add tension on the strap until the dents popped out. I worked about six different spots with it and am VERY satisfied with how it worked out!

Re: Project Cheap Thrills!

I decided that I would make minimal modifications to the outside of the truck. Here is some shots of my work on shaving the door locks. The driver's side was first and doesn't look as great as the passenger side. Both should take just a skim of filler to make straight.

Re: Project Cheap Thrills!

The front fenders eventually will be replaced. I got some good cut off front cups from VA72C10 (Jonathan) and the original front cups were rotten. I thought I'd continue practicing my bodywork. These cups will be temporarily tacked in so that when its time to replace the fenders I can just cut through the welds and sell them to someone that needs them. Again, I started with the driver's side so I feel the passenger side turned out better.

Good to see the pics full size. Looks even better than the texted pics

It's a really solid truck in person and Nick's been doing a great job on the body work. He's now not just a great mechanic/guru of all things caster/camber

Re: Project Cheap Thrills!

Somewhere in this trucks life it either got T-boned or side swiped something. Both the bed and the cab corner had extensive damage that had been that had been repaired poorly. The center of the pillar had been patched with a piece of steel that looked like it was bent over someone's knee and then smothered in filler. I ground back some of the badly popping filler at one time and eventually bought a patch for that whole corner. The patch will still need a cab corner but that's the least of my worries. This is my next project. I cut the lower side to explore how bad it is. Just like the cups, I'll just tack this section in and cut it out later when its time to doo ALL the cab repairs. I won't be doing all that this go around.

Thanks Jonathan! I was forced to be a Body Man! It is fun though, a little tedious at times but fun. Too see all the dents come out and the truck get smoother is very satisfying. Lets see if I can keep this up!

Re: Project Cheap Thrills!

Here is some random pics I found. The truck has a 3/5 drop. The 22's will be here soon so I've gotta convert it to disc brakes soon. The front should be a 5.5 with a 2.5" spindle. It has a 3" spring in the front now so if I have any clearance issues that I can't remedy any other way I can always go to a 2" spring. I will be running 265/40s in the rear so I will either run a 265/35 or a 255/35 in the front. If I don't have to, I won't run any spacer in the front at all so that I can tuck the fronts as much as possible. The spindles should kick out both sides 3/4" so we'll see where it lands. The rear will either be a 6" or 7" drop depending on what the stance wants when everything is fitted. The rear will need a spacer but I'm not sure how much. It has a 67 diff and the 22 is a 6" backspacing. I want the rears to tuck in just a bit without looking sucked in or sitting too far out. UUgghh! Stance is everything and mock up is something that I'll definitely take my time with.

The next two pics show the difference between a 67 door and a 68-71 door. If you are counting that make three doors that Chevy had on these trucks. 67, 68-71 and 72. Apparently when the truck got damaged on the driver's side the door was replaced with a 68-71 door (the vent wing is 68-72) . You'll notice that the 67 door is flat where the handle bolts on and the 68-71 door has insets for the handle.

The last pic is of the bed turned upside down on one of the shop engine carts so I could spend some time on the bottom without killing myself.

Awesome progress!! Trucks looks good and what's your fix for the door mix up? Get a 67 driver or get a 68-71 passenger and put 67 went windows back in?
