Re: 56 GMC Aussie Style

It was quite a mission getting a p/s pump to fit as the pump was so close to the steering box, I almost considered running a manual box just to save me the headaches. 348/409 pump brackets hang the pump out way too far.

I re-worked an early sbc cradle & fabbed up a rear support/bracket along with early bbc remote style pump. With it all tucked up close & tight, I have 7/16" clearance between pulley & box. GM steel remote reservoir is bolted on the Radiator support.

Cheers Kim, Marc yeh I agree Bubbles is pretty cool!

Here's some close up pics of the patina, notice Rh rear fender has black undercoat as opposed to the Lh which is red/brown. Paint is original but not sure why GM mixed it up I guess it may have been a production thing??

Damn fine truck! Love the motor, love the stance and even though I'm kinda partial to the old duct tape, I really like the new upholstery. Great work, Red.

Red I red your thread last night and it very similar to mine. You have done some really nice work. I came real close to putting a 348 with tri power in mine. A real good friend of mine has one that needs to be rebuilt. He didn't want to sell it but said if I wanted it I could have it for free. If the 430 Buick don't work out , that is what I will do.

Rich, hope the 430 works out for you, its different & it would probably save you alot of cost in the long run.

Re: 56 GMC Aussie Style

I finally fired up the 348 for the first time, after sorting out a few teething issues, I realised that Tri Power= more pipes & fittings= more potential fuel leaks.
I managed to run the camshaft in, all good so far!
I decided to dump the bell style air cleaners, I was never really happy with them anyway, they barely look like they would breath on my lawn mower.

I opted to go for a set of reproduction GTO style, I figured if they work on a 389 Poncho they'll be plenty enough for the 348.

Great look, I love the 348 valve covers. I could not tell, are you running progressive linkage or do all three open together??

The 348/409s are one of the best looking engines IMHO.

I'm such a huge fan of this build. This truck has the perfect natural patina, the perfect stance and it possesses such a mean attitude. Good on ya for keeping going on this Kobe bud. You've built yourself a real gem here.

Orrie, yes they are progressive but adjustable, the centre Carb has the idle circuits, front & rear don't, they work as secondaries & come on after half throttle.

Re: 56 GMC Aussie Style

Thanks for the added pictures bud, this is one sweet ride. I expected there to be more patina on the hood, roof and fenders than there is. Where these parts repainted?

This makes me want to take the rally wheels off my 56 and go with my first pan of painted steel wheels and wide white walls

I actually like the Rally combo on your Truck, wait & see how it looks when your finished.

Previous owner told me Fenders & hood were repainted back in the mid 60s due to sand storm damage. Firewall, front floor, dash top, roof (heavily crows feeted) were painted while the cab was off doing the Camaro clip.

Removed sparkplugs & loaded the cylinders up with WD40, went for the big rotate, started turning tightish but steady, got 3/4's around & then locked
Eventually with back & forward turning & a hole can of WD40 & sqirts of motor oil I freed it up I did notice that the sparkplugs in cylinder 3 & the adjacent cyl 4 had signs of rust, carb had signs of rust also, "so much for doing a VHT rebuild" After tearing the engine down it was evident it had eaten water through the carb & treacled into the intake & stained 3 & 4 cyl bores enough that a hone wont fix, it will need 030 to get it right.
Aside from that you could have eaten out it, the undamaged cylinders still had a nice cross H pattern & it would have been a nice runner for a long time.
So cool! I have a 348 in a 59 impala I have love them engines!
