Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
He was using a water cooled transformer machine, looked to be fairly old.
I stand corrected on the difficulty in finding 1008. Just got back from the local steel warehouse and they had 1008 20ga. in stock, $26/sheet. I didn't ask if they had 19ga. (what Ron said he uses) because I mainly bought it to start playing with my bead roller. Sorry for hi-jacking your thread.

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Today I started on the dash. My buddy bought the Dakota Digital VHX series gauges on Ebay for $400 and also bought the 55-59 chevy truck bezel too. So I first cut out the old part of the dash. Then made a piece to fill it all in. Next I got the gauges in to the position of where I wanted them. Then cut it in. Then made a piece for the top screws to go in and the bent a piece of 3/8 fuel line and tacked it on. Next was to dome the top. I made it in 3 pieces so it was not a pain to figure out. I tacked it all together. Then call my buddy to see if he liked it. He did, so tomorrow after work I will weld it all together. He might pick it up by the end of the week so the panel is getting closer.

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Jim, Thank you. I am also getting rid of the radio delete and smoothing that out. It will keep the factory glove box and speaker grill. I will be turning the ash tray into a false door for his Ipod hook up (that will be his radio). Sometime it will get a lower dash panel extension made for the heat/AC ducts.

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Atommik, youngrodder, Thank you
I got it welded up tonight and only have to make 2 small filler pieces for the sides and the filler piece where the old column came through the dash. I also filled the radio holes. It is coming along really nice and is soon going home. My buddy can not wait to work on it. Shannon

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
oldman3, Thank you. It will be different but I think it fits well.
48 GMC BURB, Thank you. I would love to come to OC but we are so busy at work and I will be trying to get everything done to get the panel at least driveable for the Nat East. The truck is leaving tonight and I will be back on the panel by the weekend. We will have to met up though. You are coming to the Nats aren't you? I can not wait to see your build. What happened to the 9 inch? I knew you blew it on the way to the Goodguys show. Shannon

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Well the 48 left tonight and it went back to its home. He is building the bed and I will get it back when the bed and fenders are on. Then I will build the running boards, tranny tunnel and one of those front tilting hoods. Now back on to my panel truck.

48 GMC BURB, I would have loved to be going to OC. It has been over 15 years the last time I have gone to it. What hotel are you staying at for the Nats. We will have to get together when you come.
oldman3, Thank you and me too. It is in the garage now. Shannon

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
PRWFAB, That sounds great. We will have to meet up. Trust me I know what is like, I have been going to car shows with out it being on the road for yearssssssss! Last year my kids asked when we were going to take mine to a show. What better motivation. They all pile in when I move it around. The wife is not excited at all.

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Shannon, I had to re-read your first few pages in this thread today. I fired up my bead roller and tried practicing some "raised panels" with a step die today and I don't have it figured out yet. I can do a straight line pretty well, but get messed up with the curved corners. What advice can you offer to a bead rolling newbie? Yours are the benchmark I'm using for comparison! Thanks!

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
BlueJeep, Thank you. I built my bead roller so It has I think around a 2 5/8 dia dies, so it does not make really tight corners. I use a small coffee can to draw in the corners. I jog the control on the corners but the bead roller only goes about about 22 inches a minute. One other thing is make sure that when you do your corners that it does not cut the sheet metal. If you do too tight of a corner it will. I made a set of 3/16 dies and I need more clearance in the step area because it cut instead. Hope that helps.

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Well I got he 48 truck back this weekend. My buddy built his bed while I worked on my panel. So now I am going to build the running boards, splash aprons and the roll pan for now. I will do the tranny tunnel and maybe a roll up back window among a bunch of little things. I started on the running boards tonight and have the lower part bent. They will fit the fenders on both ends and will be smooth. Next is fitting them and making the ends, and then the upright pieces. It will really look good with them and the splash aprons on.
