Yep another good day. The brown truck came. Cab corners, inner cowl to outer cowl panels, and outer cowls. Plus ran and picked up a bunch of steel and aluminum sheet and box. Plus some round tube for 2 corvette drive shafts. I had to borrow the machine shops (where i work) flat bed truck because the aluminium sheet was 5'x10' I think I will be busy.

Well it was not on the 51 but it was on my buddies f100 that I bagged a few months ago. I am making a aluminium bed cover. I cut back the front of the bed so the cover would not come above the 45° bed angles. Fords front panel comes to the top of them. I replaced the top tube with a piece of 1x1 tubing. It has threaded holes in it and I made a 1/8 plate on the outside of the bed and then sandwiched a SST piano hinge between the bed sheet metal and the box tubing. Then cut the aluminium box with my miter saw and drilled and tapped it also. Then tig welded it all together. I then sawed the aluminum sheet to the size I needed and I will bend it this week. I had to buy a 5'x10' piece because the bed is 49" wide and then it gets 1" legs bent on it. It should be really nice for a boat load less than the ones they sell. Here are some pictures.

Well back at the 51. I have all the pieces for the bed cover made. I just have to get the air cylinders for it and make the mounts. Then it is done. I cut the lower panel out between the cab corners, fit it and tack welded it in. Then cut and fit the tube that I rolled to fit up against the back panel and welded it to the other floor structure. Next it to put the corner curved tubes in and make the inner cab corners. Then put in the outers.

Chevette, Yes, I used the step roll on the bead roller first then put it in the break to put a back bend on it. Then used the shrinker to get it to the profile of the back of the cab. It works great and saves you from having to buy that large back panel.

That looks great! Your framing work is going to make for a stout cab. Nobody likes flex, especially on pannel alignment. Top notch!

Shannon is the tubing your using for the floor 1x1"? Man I need to get myself a tubing bender.. i really like the curved piece for the inner cab corner floor brace piece.

98layinframe, yes, it is 1 x 1 x.125 box tube. But you need a tubing roller to put the bow in the tube. I made my tubing bender so it has a roller on it so the following bar rolls on it. I take the die out and put my rolling atachment in. Which is 2 rollers about 6" apart. The lower roller goes between the upper rollers. I jack the roller up and crank the tube back an forth. A little at a time till I get the bow I want. I works pretty good.

I got some floor repair to do too but the tools I'd like to have to do what I need to do on the whole truck will cost more than I will have in the truck when it's done...... LOL!

Keep on posting pics xpickup. No matter how irrelevent the pictures may seem, there are others (like me) that are first timers, that will gain huge by seeing how things are being done and relate to what they have in their garage.

hey getting the tools to make this stuff happen is a long process. But if you plan on building more than one truck or car. Just invest in tools cause man they make your life easier. I got a healthy checklist to knock out this year. Not only does shannon have great tools he can customize them and make his own. So you guys are really witnessing what can be done by one person, with a family in a small garage. Its top notch work too.

98layinframe, all it is not too bad. I believe you can do it no problem. I could always ship you the back pieces of the tubing.

FarmerSid, yes, the tools can be expensive. I have been buying / building what I have for probably the past 15 years. Don't worry I will post plenty of pictures. I always am glad to show how I do things and am glad if anyone if can use my ways of doing things.

99tolife, yes , you can NEVER have enough tools. Beside being a truck-o-holic I am a tool-o-holic. It helps greatly that I work in a machine shop and can make what I need. I have a great owner/boss that let's me use what I need for the most part. When you say small garage I mean small. It is only about 18' x 18'. My buddy calls it the phone booth. I am going to see about adding 24 ' to it so I will have some more room. Thank you, I always like to take each build up a notch. I can not wait till I get to my 54.

It is going to be back onto sheet metal tomorrow. So stay tuned.

This morning I got up and started on the cab corners. I removed the inners and outers. I also cut, fitted, and welded in the bent 1x1 corners. Then made the inners. I fit and welded in the cab corner on the passenger's side. Then ground the cab corner and the back panel I made up. I started on the drivers side. But I had to make the lower back inner door opening. I made it and welded it in. Then I blanked out the floor panel. I have a couple more tubes to put in. Then I can draw my line to start paneling them on the bead roller. Here are some pictures.

Nice work, Shannon. Good thing you have a motor on your bead roller. I like the way you built that frame for the floor. That is going to be very solid and stable.
