Re: 77 k10 short box winter beater build

Made a little progress today. I might put the box back on the truck before I do the bed liner, I don't trust my work stand with me climbing around in the box.

Looking good! Wanna paint mine next? How much adjustment is there on the beds of these trucks?

Thanks man. When you put a bed together, everything bolts together, then there are a couple welds on the rear tailgate posts. There is really no adjustment. About the only adjusting you can do once it's together is move the tailgate posts with a porta power to fix the tailgate gaps.

I meant once the bed is on the frame. Is there a lot of adjustment in it to line it up with the cab ect.

Yes, I did it by myself this morning, and it took a couple hours of moving big washers around to get the body lines as close as I could. I used a long straight edge, and 2 different thickness washers to get it as close as I could.

Re: 77 k10 short box winter beater build

I made a new taillight harness, and got that installed, I had to do some sanding and buffing on the box, and got about half the trim on the box installed.

Re: 77 k10 short box winter beater build

I got all of the trim installed, I still have the wheel moulding to install, but I have to paint the stripes yellow. I had help this afternoon getting the inside of the bed prepped for bed liner.

Looking forward to the bedliner, I want to do this to my truck as well. Which one are you going to use?

I am going to use Sem Rock-it liner. It is a spray in bed liner kit that seems to have good reviews. I have had good luck with all of the other Sem products I have used, so I will hope for the best.

Well, I don't think I could be any happier with the way the bed liner turned out. It's still curing, so there is still some glossy spots.

Re: 77 k10 short box winter beater build

Got the wheel wells undercoated, got the yellow stripe painted in the wheel well moldings, and got them installed, and cleaned up and installed the center caps. Should be able to take it for a spin this weekend!

Re: 77 k10 short box winter beater build

Drove the truck to work this afternoon. 75 miles. It idles smooth, but under power it seems to run a little rough. Speedometer doesn't work, fuel gauge isn't reading accurate, and there is a bunch of wind noise from the passenger door. This little list of stuff will give me something to tinker with for awhile.

Re: 77 k10 short box winter beater build

I advanced the timing a little and now it runs pretty good. On the 150 mile round trip I only got 11.5 mpg. Advancing the timing made a big difference in throttle response, and it didn't feel sluggish like it did before, I hope it helps the mpg.

Re: 77 k10 short box winter beater build

Your truck looks great. Nice work.
I hope you get it tuned a little better. I had a 78 with a 250 in it years ago and I would get no better than 11 mpg.

I love how this thing turned out! Can't believe how quickly you got it done either. It took me about 5 years to do mine and I think you did more work. You have a better shop though.

Re: 77 k10 short box winter beater build

make sure to spray some cavity wax or oil in those bedsides, cab corners, and rockers before you do to much winter driving. This truck turned out too nice to let it rust out again.
