Cool Altimeter. That's a real one. I used to Remove and Replace those on jets in the military.
You can dial it in by finding out the local barometric pressure from your local airport, and setting that to your actual altitude. In the US, Barometric Pressure is calibrated in Inches of Mercury. 29.92'' [Hg] is standard barometric pressure at Sea Level. If you set it at 29.92'' you will read your ''Altitude'' above Sea Level. What is Prescott's elevation?

Got only 3 nights of camping done. The last night was woke at 2:30AM by a gust of sand, then sprinkle of rain which intensified. Drove 674 miles, consumed $191.39 worth of gas and 1 3/4 quart of oil. Blue Cloud ran like a champ. Thinking of starting a new OT: Camp trip in Valley Of The Gods. Have a ton of cool pictures.

Looks like a black dog curled up behind the tailgate. Don't see a tent. Where is this place? Your gas tab seems excessive. Are you getting the full Ten Miles Per Gallon these trucks were designed for? I usually strap a couple 5 Gallon jerrycans in the stepwells of my Stepside when ''expeditioning.'' [Perhaps the only advantage of the Stepside bodystyle.] Also I rack up VIP Points at Fry's and fill up empty jerry cans. This month I'll get 70 cents off up to 35 gallons. I store the cans with 2 oz of Stabil and they don't go flat under 2 years.

The windmill is "tilting at you". Great pictures of another epic trip. Glad to see that you are planning to keep the little old 307. Original motors are cool and usually each engine has some advantages you can work with. Of course, some more than others. But it's running well and you can replace gaskets and seals as needed.

Pima County has less stringent requirements than Maricopa. Also, since my truck is manual, they won't touch it. I'm told to set up the rear wheels on the rollers, they put probes in the exhaust pipes, a chock under the left front tire, and tell me to drive 30 MPH in 3rd.
A JiffyLube employee ruined a B&M megashifter on the TH350 in my '67 K/10 Suburban. Not knowing how to lift the anti-reverse bar with 2 fingers, he muscled his way with it. I had to replace it. Since then I change my own oil. I ran the Orange Stepside to PHX for a gig last month. I try to keep the speed under 70 since a 53 year old truck has a lot of rattles and vibrations, and I'm not comfortable in high speed traffic either. I mostly stay in the right lane, and watch my rear view mirrors. A GPS helps with more accurate groundspeed info than the bouncing speedo needle, and also gives me my location. I mount it on top of the pulled-out ashtray and taped to the radio delete plate. In PHX it's a necessity for getting around in traffic. Phoenix drivers are agressive. Not as much as LA drivers were 40 - 50 years ago. LA drivers have mellowed since then, due to their overwhelming traffic density. Do you have packrats? They love the soy-based insulation on Japanese wiring. They used to attack the wiring on my '92 Subaru. Honda sells a ''Rodent Tape''. It's just like standard 1/2'' vinyl 3M electrical tape, but it's green and laced with capsicum. And costs about $70 a roll. Also has a cartoon mouse inside a red circle with a red line thru it every few inches. Also with generations of varmints sampling the local cucina with salsas, tacos and burritos, the local packrats might prefer it for it's sabor picante. A small bottle of McIlhenny's might work as well, until the next carwash.

Honda is fixed. Between the oil change and other major service, this cost more than a car payment, glad it was paid off several months ago. Stuck a few moth balls under the hood, and on the ground.
BTW: the altimeter is not working, so that's getting removed. Since I got a load of firewood, parked across the street. Had a killer sunrise! This is a second home for the neighbor, view from the back porch.

Mothballs, bright lights, and keeping the hood open are OK for keeping packrats at bay. Don't bother with the Irish Spring soap trick. Doesn't work. My packrats just ate the soap too.
Look on your Honda service invoice. Did they charge you $70 for Rodent Tape? On the EJ22 engine on my old '92 Subaru Legacy there is a Cam Angle Sensor cable harness. A mini canister [much like a points condenser] with Red, White and Black 22 gauge wires inside a loose woven wire shielding, ending with some terminals that plugged into the ECM harness under the throttle body. Running right thru Mr + Mrs Packrat's bedroom. After the rats redecorated, the open in the CAS line caused a No Start gripe. I tried splicing the wires back together, still no good. I called O'Reilly's. They could special-order me one for over$300. I called Tucson Subaru, for a loyal Subaru customer like me, they'd sell me one for $242. Then I called Ruthrauf Road Pock-A-Part. Yeah, they had some old Subarus, come and take a look. I paid $2 admission at the gate. I saw a '91 Legacy with the same engine. It had an intact CAS cable! Cost me $5, and it worked.

Trying the mothballs, car stinks wherever I park. I'm considering taking out the under hood insulation, and putting in something else, was looking at the choices:

I may get flamed for saying this, but I've never had luck with any Rochester carbs. I've given Holleys a few tries, but finally settled on the Carter AFB design, which is now only sold by Edelbrock. I have a Carter [Federal Mogul] 9635S [= Edl 1405] manual choke 600 CFM 4-Bbl on my V8 350 in the '71 GMC Jimmy, and an Edl 1404 manual choke 500 CFM 4-Bbl on an Offy intake on an L6 292 in my '68 Chevy C/10 Stepside.
If you still have the original OEM Quadrajet on your 307, then get it rebuilt by a professional. I have found Q-Jets to be finnicky, and each one was apparently hand-matched to the original engine when first sold. You can't get a generic replacement carb from the auto parts store, and turn in your old Q-Jet as a core -- you'll only get junk back. I've made that mistake. Then I put a 780 CFM Holley doublepumper on the Jimmy's engine and it sucked 2 valves, running on 105 octane. Replaced the engine with a crate 350 and a new Carter AFB [1999] and that set up has been running good in the Jimmy ever since. Rebuilt a fresh 292 for the '68 Stepside in 1977. In '78 I upgraded to a 390 CFM Holley, Offenhauser intake and Clifford headers on the bored-out [.030] 292. Ran for 250,000 miles -- took me 25 years. Downed the rig for overhaul in 2002. In 2005, I was back on the road with another fresh 292 rebuild [former Original Engine] The Clifford headers and Offy intake, cleaned up nice, and went on again. For the 500 mile break-in period, I had the Holley, then a bad backfire knocked out the power valve, and we found we could'nt get it to set up right anymore. Suspected warpage of throttle-plane. It was cheaper to get a new Edelbrock 500 CFM to replace the 390 Holley. Still running good 16 years later.

Hey Kurt, count me in on this thread! Love following along with your awesome pictures. I hate driving in Mesa/Phoenix even in my Camaro or Yukon. I can’t imagine it in my 72. We bought the Denali at camel back Ford, I was running it pretty hard on the test drive to make sure everything was in order. The sales guy wasn’t even phased. He said he’s been on some Hairy test drives in his time in sales. I believe it. Phoenix is fun to visit but when it’s time to go home I’m happy to leave the big city.
