Decided to burn another day of work and get the white paint laid down. Took a bit to tape off the letters on the tailgate and make it look good but I think it turned out well. Can’t wait to marry the truck to the bed and then get the chrome attached. Waiting on a big LMC order. Need to decide if I want to paint the bed strips white or orange. Thinking walnut for the wood.

Finally! My chrome trim came in. I had to order from a different company but after a year on backorder from LMC I found some. I was also able to get the windshield and rear window in. The cab is complete, haha minus a lot of interior work and the front bumper. But the bumper is ready to be painted and when I paint the white stripe down the bed it will get its new paint as well.

The windshield was an interesting deal. A couple years ago I could have gotten one to my doorstep for around 250$ haha 700$ and sending one back that showed up shattered I finally have one. And its actual OEM thickness.

Where did you get the windshield? I will need one for my 63 as well. Are they different thicknesses? You mentioned getting one that has the same thickness as OEM.

You have to be careful with what you order. A lot of these newer winshileds are thinner and with the wrap around they are tough to put in without cracking them. Also make sure to get American made rubber seals, some are too small and it puts pressure on the windshield. They were a great company to work with. The first one came shattered, more than likely the shipping company had more to do with that by the looks of the box when it showed up. I rejected the order, called the company and they shipped a replacement the same day I rejected the package.

Got a couple friends out that helped me lift the bed on the other day. I mounted the front bumper and started to figure out the bed wood today. That is definitely not as easy as I had thought it would go. The old wood they put in these is 97'' not 8' and they are a full 7.5" wide. So you either have to get 1"x10"x10' or get rough cut lumber. either way it takes more than just buying boards, routering and drilling.

Like the color combo for sure, it's a classic! I was originally thinking orange and white for my truck but think I'm going to go orange and black instead, just cant decide if I want to paint roof or no.

Excellent paint work, she looks awesome. Bed boards are challenging, some other products do come 97" long....real wood is not a cheap option even if you mill your own boards.

These last couple days have been pretty productive. I purchased some poplar and hit the wood shop. I used GMC Pauls website for the info on cutting the right widths and lengths. I then used the dado blades to cut the groves and knock down the edges for the metal strips.

drilled all the holes alongside the bed to wood, now I just need to find all the places for the bed to frame bolt holes. If anyone has some hints there feel free to send me a reply.

I think I am going to try my hand at epoxy resin. Once I get all the holes drilled I will decide on the finish. I like the poplar look though.

Anyhow here is a picture of the progress. Hope all your projects are coming along as well. God bless.

Really nice work on the bed wood. I'm planning to do the same for my step side once I get the steering and seat finished. Not sure yet what wood I'm going to buy, need to make a trip to the hardwood store to see what looks good. The poplar does look pretty nice.

I personally like the look of no bolts through the wood to the frame. The previous owner of my truck apparently did as well. He just used shorter bolts that only ran through the bottom section of the bed crossmember, not from the top all the way through. Then you don't have to have expert precision on where you drill the hole in the wood.

Another option is to use a bolt through the top and carve out a small relief for the head in the bottom of the wood so it goes all the way through the crossmember. Whichever direction you go, I'm sure it will turn out nicely!

Wow, that looks great, very well built.
That's also the next thing, that's going to be built on my truck.
For the frame bolts, I wanted to use a washer of the same size, like the Exenter washer, as a template for the countersinks, because I can mark a center hole there to center the countersink, I'll find out if it works that way.

Looking good, in the search bar put in "good wood" some ideas on products and and some finished bed wood. Depending on how much time your truck sits outside, you may need UV additives if your going clear. I went with white auto epoxy on bare wood, 2 coats top and bottom, then body color.

I did the same as CW. I tacked the head of the bolts in place on the crossmember and then recessed the bottom of the board to allow room for the head of the bolt. It gives a cleaner look.

Truck looks great. I will be working on my bed in the spring and think I will hide the bolts too.
