Re: PO has me PO'd

Cool build, TPI's are really well suited for trucks, I have installed several of them for myself and friends and been happy overall.

Re: PO has me PO'd

Just filling in some slack time, waiting on the 1" isolation blocks to come in from cavan@service rubber.com. He sent them out n/c! Promised him i would give him a plug, really good guy and into old cars and trucks.

Anyway, thought i would build on dale99's idea of mounting the coil on the cowl. Took the factory coil mount that belongs on the intake and cut it to fit the coil. Still have to make someside mounts to equalize the weight

Thanks bk04 for looking, and i agree the TPI should be a good fit for our trucks

Yeah, that and the fact the mounting holes didnt line up with my vortec intake, or i did something wrong which is possible

I may continue the cut further, to get more of the coil weight further into the bracket, dunno

What made you run a crank trigger insead of using a small cap GM distributer?

Nope, standard sbc bolt pattern, and vortec pattern is different.

EDIT

Sorry bk 04, didnt notice you slipped that question in there...in the future, i will be building a higher hp engine, and was told it will give me a more accurate signal, since i was doing all the modifying of the wire harness, just thought it was a good time to upgrade

I have the dual sync distributor, which allows me to run sequential injector timing instead of bank to bank. Bank to bank would fire twice, which would put unused fuel in the combustion chamber, so sequential would put fuel in only when firing the plug.

Timing is controlled by the cam and crank position

Re: PO has me PO'd

Changed the mounting of the igntion box somewhat, since it was going on the inner fender well, i needed a little clearance for the double curvature. Used the isolater mounts on the bracket instead of the box, gives me alittle better then a 1/4" clearance all the way around

Re: PO has me PO'd

Moved my oem engine harness to the right side of the firewall, then down and across the bellhousing, trying to keep the high voltage wires away from the injector harness and sensors

Sorry, just got to wrapped up in my build to reply. This wiring has all my attention. Cut the oem engine harness apart, to bring the wires down the drivers side of the engine, and run power wires for the ignition box

This nerve racking, trying to mount a non oem part, but still have a pleasing overall look. I hope they look good where i placed them

Plan to contact M&H to see if they will sell me a full piece of channel to hide the wiring harness going across the firewall

Bought the other half of my coil connector from TPI Parts, now just have to splice in the double connector

Orange and Black go to the coil
Red goes to 12 volt switched
White goes to points wire in the fast harness
Grey goes to the tach lead
Yellow has voltage off of pink, and goes to starter solenoid

Re: PO has me PO'd

Well sorta, had a couple set backs.....
Took a winter vacation with the wifey, flew into Clearwater Fla., rented a conv. Camaro, and cruised the Gulf Coast
MSD set back. Wanted to extend the coil wires, but after numerous attempts couldnt get the right terminal for the ignition box. MSD was no help, they couldnt identify the terminal i needed, so they just sent me another complete cable assembly. Solved the problem by running coil wires to another location.

Coil had to be moved since it hit the distr. Speciality Retail hooked me up with a fender lug that imounted on the firewall for switched 12 volt pink

20130308_141640 by jarosaj, on Flickr

Wires that still need to be spliced...pink w/ black tracer goes to orange, and white goes to black on the coil.
I wanted to keep the colors(orange and black) but, one of the coil connectors was molded together, so i couldnt take it apart to change the wires
Ill keep looking for a connector that i can take apart

Grey tach wires get spliced together

Red wire, plus red wire from the distr. get tied into the switched pink lug. I split the original engine harness to run the 12 volt wires away from the sensor wires at the back of the engine. Pinks have to be tied together, since the smaller pink supplies power to the headlight harness

Re: PO has me PO'd

Ignition box is all wired up, with the exception of the white points wire going back into the harness under dash. Keep this wire away from power, cant help that it is going into ignition box connector. Noise being the biggest factor here

Red power wires are going to the starter lug, ground located at a good source in the starter area, as recommended by fast. Not going to the battery

Re: PO has me PO'd

Found a descreet source for power and ground, as recommended by FAST. These wires CAN NOT go into lugs, or any other source of power other then the battery. So, i am using the side posts

Re: PO has me PO'd

My son fixed my intake, used a 3" fly cutter, and did a plunge cut to get the clearance on the waterneck. He only had to cut about a 1/32", amazingly that was enough to cause problems

Guess I haven't been paying attention, just saw the posts about adding the TPI. You'll be really happy with it J. I love the one in the 71. As usual, you are going whole hog! I just bought my setup with a Speed Density upgrade and went with all the stock electronics. Can't wait to see you get this thing running!

Thanks Red,.....yeah, i was trying to get your input, thought i would get better product support if i bought one that has a forum, plus techies available. They have been invalueable so far!

Ran the ground wire today, went through the fender and the inner fender to try and hide it somewhat

Good call, I did the same thing, went with someone that had a lot of stuff out there and it really helped when I had tech issues or part return issues.

Re: PO has me PO'd

A liitle update...had some medical issues over the last few months. Plantar Faciitus has keptme on the couch in a cast. Blood work, MRA and MRI indicated that ive had four strokes over a period of time, which explains the numbness in the right hand. Tend to drop things, as long as i dont drop a bolt down the intake, i should be ok

Working on the fuel system, since all the sensers are wired, and power to the ECU are completed. Found an in tank fuel pump from a 2002 f body at Racetronics, after i bought it, i found out that a truck version of the same year would have worked without mods. Our tanks are about 13" deep, so i had to extend the 3 tubes in the pump to accommadate this demension. Waiting on the new tank from brothers to arrive.....keeping the oem sending unit, and adding pump to another location behind it

Kinda got a little ahead of myself, and had to redo the power harness running to the battery, since i had to add in the harness for the fuel pump, and relays. Using tubing and proclassic hose as recommended by JJH Jimmy, still waiting for fittings to arrive from Jegs

Bought a Camero fuel rail, JBClassic, to get my fuel lines headed towards the drivers side, plus, i was able to combine the corvette fuel rail to eliminate the ninth injecter

One of the tubes has been modified(return line) the other two support rods havent been done. Fuel pump comes apart relatively easy. Also, you have to extend the power harness, inside the upper pump housing and basket (harness removed, and not shown in pic)

If you cut the two flares on the support rods, the two halves can be separated. Just release the two snap tangs on the fuel basket first

Parts required: three pieces of 1/4" ss tubing about 9" long, and 3 compression splices
