Re: My 52 GMC Build

OK our North Carolina trip 2018
2275mi in 11 days started Oct 17
Day 1-2
Sorry it has taken a while I'm having trouble getting the pictures together.
Like other years. We left home on a Wednesday at 5:30pm 2 hrs to the border and then about 3hrs to a friends place near Grove city Pennsylvania to spend our first night. Why is all this important, well we almost didn't make it. As we where about to get off the interstate in Grove city we started smelling something burning hot I could not place the smell and all my gauges where good. We where 10 min from our destination so we kept going slow. The smell turned into a squeal I thought the serpentine belt was eating it's self. Found out the idler pulley seized causing the belt to slip and heat up and melted the tensioner pulley. The next morning I used our friends truck to go get parts, only took 20 min to replace idler, tensioner and belt but had to wait for parts. I replaced all these parts when I built the motor. Got under way at 2:00pm and drove the next 9 hrs stopping once for fuel with no problems the rest of the trip.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

wow, you get your mileage outta stuff eh? lol.
I have seen many of those belt failures. sometimes the belt will break and simply fall out on the road. sometimes it comes off and flaps around under the hood taking out a/c and other lines. sometimes, like yours, you get lucky and it is a simple fix. it has delayed you but not cost too much.
sticking with stock parts is my goal. if you need something while on the road somewhere it should be readily available. good forethought on your part. sorry to hear about your troubles but good to hear you got it straightened out easily.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

I’m glad it was a rather simple fix. I thought about you guys the whole time we were in GA. I really hated not being able to meet up. But so glad you guys had a safe trip.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

So got my pictures together finally.
North Carolina trip 2018
2275mi in 11 days started Oct 17
Day 3-4
Friday eve we went to Detroit Speed open house, they put on a great event.
I know it's a f__d but this guy built an auto cross truck with a powerstroke diesel in it. Motor is into the fire wall 18".
This is what a $100,000 paint job looks like all hand sprayed and buffed. 2nd pick is the ujoint and driveshaft.
pic 4 The Goodguys show was good despite the rain.
pic 5 Saw this truck outside the show can anyone tell me what is going on here?

Re: My 52 GMC Build

You know Bob I don’t remember seeing the pups last year. Still cool to see your trips. I like Virginia Beach hadn’t been there in years. Last time I was there went on a whale watching cruise. Had a lot of fun and froze my butt off. Didn’t see any whales though. Also when did you change the shifter handle?

We had CJ last year with us, maybe he was in the truck sleeping. Go figure freeze your but and no whales. I have about 10 beer tap handles I use for my shifter and swap them out from time to time.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

North Carolina trip 2018
2275mi in 11 days started Oct 17
Day 8
We did some exploring around the state park it was a military base. We climbed a look out tower that was 75' tall I don't really like climbing things, but I did it, half way up CJ started shaking like a leaf so I had to carry him up, 30lb gets heavy fast.
This Battery was built in 1942 all we could do is walk around it.
Then down on the beach we could let the dogs run free with there leads. They loved exploring.
It was cool to see 2 more towers down the beach.
Then we checked out the big guns they had on display 3", 155mm, 8" and the big 16"

Got the truck as close to the open ocean as I could, probably a few feet too close as we almost got stuck in the soft sand.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

North Carolina trip 2018
2275mi in 11 days started Oct 17
Day 9
On our was to West Virginia we crossed the Bay bridge. Starts near sea level and gets up to 200' in the air.
We stopped at Prospect peak where 3 states come together.
Gus decided it was his turn to drive, sorry bud your only 7mths old.
We where almost at our campground and this guy started waving frantically out his window and we stopped in the middle of the road, why? because he collects 1954 GMC's. He said what are the chances I see a GMC. Within 5 min of talking he and his GF invited us for dinner at there place.
So we said yes we set up camp and a few hours later we went out for dinner.
