Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

drove the truck all weekend. hauled some stuff to remind it what its for. stopped by a car show and had two guys as if I would sell it. it gathered a crowd. its an ugly thing. im glad everyone has low expectations. love my truck. on a bad note the lower door hinge pin came out. have to tap that back in.

So cool to hear! On the expectations, it's an old truck, they are going to dig it! It's funny, my Rambler is NOT very nice, a "Maaco" like paint job, over dents even, rust hole in the bottom of the drivers door, the interior is CRAP all redone 20 years ago but HORRIBLY done with wrinkles and stuff, and people still think it's a perfect original or it was "restored."

My five minutes was five minutes today, just did a little metal shaping on the front fenders so they are ready for primer.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

Got the "new" aprons stripped of parts and straightened out for sand blasting. I am thinking maybe having them powder coated as they the only kinda funky part will be behind the grille. But even then these are so rough from the factory it's hardly different where I worked the damaged areas.

I gotta admit guys, I’m feeling a little lost now that the truck is done. I go out to the garage and putz around but there’s really nothing to do. After pushing for months to get stuff done, it’s hard to quit cold turkey...

Take things off and bolt them back on then wean off slowly.

I disassembled the parking brake stuff I just got and started figuring that out.

If anyone knows, does it have a pin through it to hold it into the the fender/cab bracket? The last photo is the close up of that. It has what looks like a pin in it that is broken off flush.

Dang, if that Factory Assembly Manual had made it to you, you could look it up.

I hear you Mark. Had the same feeling when I finished mine. Just don't do what I did... drive it a couple weeks then decide to "upgrade" most of the drivetrain. Now have a whole new set of bugs to work out but it's keeping me busy tinkering on the truck. A form of denial I guess

drive around all over looking for deals on stuff related to fixing old trucks. buy the good stuff. totally fix it, sell it.
that gives you time in the truck driving around
the projects are small and have a light at the end of a short tunnel
if you get tired of a certain part or it is more involved than you want, just resell it
keeps your skills up
keeps you happy because you get to hammer the living S%$# outta stuff and work your frustrations out

post pics of your stuff (ahem, car parts) on here so we can keep tabs on you, lol.

Can be hard to sit still at times, but I'm sure you can find something to do. Always old junk needing repaired.

Mark, I totally agree. it was hard work to get the truck on the road, now i go out there and stare at it. I may repaint a few parts come spring, but for now, I start it up and smile.

I got some work done on the parking brake, I am very happy with it, tightened up a loose part, modified a washer to fit perfectly, it is going to work like new.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

Huge adventure with the truck today. I drove 100 MILES round trip to get some work done. Hard to believe that just a couple of weeks ago a trip around the block at 20 mph was a big milestone - now I'm driving 2 HOURS round trip! Truck didn't miss a beat, although my ears are still ringing from the lack of exhaust!

The truck was too low (I know, impossible right?). My front fenders behind the wheel opening were less than 3" off the pavement - I couldn't get out of my driveway without scraping, and a flat tire would have torn up some sheet metal. So I took it to a friend with a rack to work on it elevated instead of laying on my back underneath. He changed the front springs and replaced axle seals in the rear. With his expertise and equipment a job that would have taken me 2 weeks was done in 2 hours.

Now the truck sits almost perfectly level, with about 5" clearance. It doesn't look nearly as cool, but it is eminently safer and more practical - crucial since it will be a daily driver. Here's a "Before" pic taken on the way down; it was dark by the time we got the new springs in so the "After" pics will have to wait until tomorrow.

100 miles with no exhaust? You'll be hearing bells for a while!

I put in the FatMat (actually "Rattletrap Xtreme" on the kickboard (?) and firewall on the passenger side, then hung the evap unit (again). Yes, the defroster ducts are in. My 70-year old body is very unhappy, however... (I'll be ready to go again tomorrow. )

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3

Got the inside of the rear fenders prepped for primer that I plan on doing in the morning before heading off to work. The primer needs 24 hours at 68 degrees and at night it's going a bit below that so I will prime it in the morning and leave it out in the sun all day while I am at work.

I also got the front fenders up in the attic so they will be out of the way until I need them. Didn't think about that till today wondering what in the hell I was going to do with them, that worked good!
