A '54 named Busty

the last two washer are super fun to get out as they had 67 years to get acquainted with the rust

I used a liberal amount of forty water and a flat screw driver (and a hammer) to slide it off 1 millimeter at a time

and I think this is the order of how they all go back on (not sure about the top two as they fell out and may have flipped like a bad coin toss)

CORRECTION: the top two washers need to be reversed the D shaped one goes on top then two of these plasticy ones (I later learned that in this pic I am missing one) later in the thread I show all of them in the proper order

the L shaped strip was next to come out, that last bottom 1/3 of it was rock hard

and finally around the final bend the last strip is riveted on, but these are really weak rusted tubular rivets so a dull screwdriver pops the strip right off

and a small punch knocks out the rivets nicely and easily

and here are the sticks painted and ready for new rubber

Note: I only painted inside the channels and left the rest "patinaed"

I did that on the Jeep. The hardest part was getting that little rivet to "squish" properly. I got the tool and put the bottom on an anvil and used the tool and a BFH to collapse that little rivet.

ha ha, haven't yet, still working on growing that third arm to help me hold it in place while I swing some 3 pound Gentle Persuasion its way

yes sir I thought for about 5 seconds about putting that vent window in a vice but ended up changing my mind right quick, so this may call for a RWI moment

so a little nonsense update, we all know the details belong to the devil, so here we have some black stainless steel #8 x 1/2" screws to use on them doors, some will hold the vent window in place others will hold that metal retainer strip on the bottom of the doors

got these cause The Filling Station only has bright shinny ones and we all know Chrome won't get you Home but Black will get you Back

on a serious note, I aint no metallurgist so I read that stainless steel won't rust but again we don't want shinny, we know that Zinc will rust as fast as it can and black oxide will do the same, so this gets the best of both worlds it's stainless and black

and I promise to let you know in 40 years how they did

the rest of the door/window parts arrived today, I must say The Filling Station ships really fast, and as you can see below looks like the Feds have been getting some training from FedEx, ha ha

so let's take a look at what came in the boxes

in the bigger box we got new metal retainer brackets to hold the weather strip against the bottom of each door

notice they are raw and not painted

in the smaller aka mangled box we got the window vertical retainer channels

notice how these are painted black

I find it interesting how the parts that will be hidden inside the doors came to us painted and the parts that will go on the outside were not, things that make you go hmmmmm

and we also got some tubular rivets for the vent windows and a special punch to collapse them properly

we also got a set of pivot rivets (and another extra set just in case)

progress was made today as we assemeblinated the triangles

this first rubber piece is excellent quality and goes in super easily using our cooking spray

its a little different than in the video: you no longer need to drill out the two top rivets to loop it around the top edge, now it just snaps into place, super easy

there is a left and a right one, but even a Pollack like me can figure that out

the punch tool you buy from them is a Joke, how are you supposed to swing a hammer while keeping it perpendicular to the rivet, no way in Nova Scotia can it be done, not even with the Punch Blue Tape Socket Extender 3000 aka PBTSE3K

tried the C clip routine but that failed miserably, as one needs to be an octopus to control it properly

and can someone explain to me how is this possible? how can a tubular aluminum rivet take out a punch, is it made out of softainium or something

anyway we kept tappin' and somehow we got it done, we kept hammering till there was no more wiggability

then it was time for the glass to go back in

this is a two step process, and once you get the stud in then you have to enlarge the hole for the new rivet a little bit
