Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

After what I've been through on my windshield install, I believe I could install one by myself if I had a normal truck to install one on! But would you even want to install the glass before paint?

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

I've never looked at the side steps to see how they are attached to the truck. Perhaps if you had room, you could remove the bed, put it on some stands and work on it at your leisure.

the steps are held on with bolts. Just take a look underneath the steps and you'll see the bolt heads, They attach upwards into the step side fenders

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Almost 4 years ago, I started my "long term" 59 Apache project. It didn't get very far because I wasn't able to title the truck I'd bought. As of yesterday, the project is real again This time with a clear title and upgraded to BW.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Looks good Rick. What the short version of why you couldn't title it, then you could?

I'm working on my speaker hole repairs today. I got the passenger door patches welded in. One of the patches left two gaps I'll have to "bridge" somehow. Of course this had to be after I welded in the first patch successfully thereby eliminating my ability to get my arm in there with a copper backer! I may have to make something out of a long, flatten piece of copper pipe.

Oh, and due to me being an IDIOT! I realized after I'd welded in the patches that I forgot to turn on my gas! What a bonehead, huh? Learning, learning !

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Thanks Daze, Denee, Dan and Schrum. Dan, I'm almost embarrassed to say. First truck was supposed to have a title, but PO couldn't find it at home and said he'd have to check his storage unit. I was dumb and trusted him, but he never produced. Then I discovered there was no VIN plate for me to even get a bonded title. Live and learn... I just bought the pictured truck yesterday. At least I've got two trucks worth of parts to work with!

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Ugh, that sucks. Oh well, you're looking on the bright side - always a good thing. Have you got any of those parts you're missing on the 1st truck? Those rear fenders, hood, any kind of drivetrain?

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

I've pretty much got all the body parts needed, and will end up with a bunch of extras. I'd already aquired and rebuilt most of the drivetrain other than engine. I've got a couple 350's, but not sure yet whether I'll rebuild one of those or go a different direction. Both trucks were pretty much stripped to a shell, but this one came with a guage cluster i might be able to restore, and an original seat frame with springs that might also be restored and upholstered. Still missing a lot of interior parts though.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

It started raining this afternoon so I had to shut down before I was totally done. But I managed to do final fitting/grinding on the passenger side speaker holes.

That's not a burn through on the upper left it's a burn mark of a bit of paint that was too close.

Threw some primer on it just to keep it from flash rusting until I get back to it tomorrow - I hope!

QUESTION:

Do most of you guys and girls weld all the spots in and then grind everything down smooth? Or do you put in a few tacks, grind, tack some more, etc?

I ground them all at the end and thought too much heat built up. In this case, I could NOT reach behind to hammer & dolly as I went.

I pretty much what you did then if there are any pin holes I fill them.

Looks good Dan real good for a first project of that type. The contoured panel isn't the easiest to start off with.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

I got a 200r4 transmission that I am thinking about using for my 52. the best part is it is free. all I have to do is take it out.
I also rounded up my 20 some year old B&M Mega shifter that has never been used. I will have to buy a plastic indicator window for the overdrive trans and maybe a taller shroud so I can raise the shifter a bit. that is if I don't change my mind again

And my gave me some DOM tube and urethane spring bushings that will work good for my motor mounts.

Yup, that's pretty much my plan.

I agree I should have made my first repair something easier. Maybe the small rust-through where the toe board/kick panel/floor meet? I didn't because I thought the only way to do that right was to pull the front sheet metal - is that right?

I also have a buuunch of miscellaneous holes all over. What the hell was it with old trucks and drilling holes in them?!

I plan to do those with the copper backing - I've not tried that yet. Doesn't the weld stick to it AT ALL?

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Installed my front fenders and there is good clearance to tires when I deflate the airbags, installed fender seals / welting, and inner fender wells. Next is the radiator support, driveshaft, cross bed sills, drill for electrical stub outs and measure for shocks. Gonna be a busy weekend.
