Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...

Every day your'e getting closer to the legalized road ready version of your stepper.

I've got mine on the lift and started on the rear brakes. I've got the parts on order.
It is in pretty good condition and the it is need of a great deal of attention.
The 6 cylinder is kind of growing on me. It is just a plain Jane basic truck.

Not done by any means, but at wanting to be at least legal and road-worthy by tomorrow afternoon... Big push to get ready to drive to Clem's in 2 weeks...

Spent yesterday addressing things like changing spark plugs, installing new serpentine belt, getting started on body work on rear fender with added gas door, installing door weatherstripping, adjusting doors, getting exhaust pipes and mufflers ready... no pics from yesterday's adventures, but closer and closer...

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...

Well the weekend found me getting tons of stuff done, like the bodywork on the fuel door...

Untitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr
Untitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr

I also used the existing exhaust to get the Stepper ready for legal street use...
Untitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr
Untitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr
Untitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr

The collectors welded on and the pipes installed and I was ready to do a valve adjustment, that's when the fun began, NOT! Pulled a valve cover to find milky oil... Thankfully, it appears the intake didn't line up as well as it should, so... water in the oil...
by Donald Olivo, on Flickr

Instead of adjusting valves, off came the intake and a cast aluminum quadrate intake (Which came with the motor) was bolted in place... tonight the Stepper runs again... I also got the License plate which makes the truck legal...
by Donald Olivo, on Flickr

Aiming on driving to work soon... still have a couple of jobs that need to be addressed...

More to come!

Got me grinning madly Don.

That is not bad progress for keeping a full time job on the side.

Motor sounds great too, thanks for preview.

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...

Was going again... I've hit a wall, while adjusting the valves Thursday, all of a sudden the electrical system decided to go on vacation. Long story short, out of the blue, when the ignition switch is switched to the on position from off, the voltage at the ignition switch drops to 5 volts. Battery is good, but will take to work tomorrow to test. Starter, wiring, and ignition switch are all new. Battery is grounded to the motor, frame and engine are grounded to frame. Bed is grounded to frame as well. Help! Any ideas and suggestions are welcome...

Don't let the new parts fool ya. I had a set of 2 week old Napa spark plug wires fool me and a bunch of local rodders. The "new" part makes you take it out of the equation.

Something is shorted or grounding out that is only on when the ignition is on, disconnect one thing at a time until the voltage gets better.

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...

Thanx for the input guyz... Well today was productive and the stepper is once again Alive and kicking. Which had me grinning like a possum pooping peach seeds...
I replaced both battery cables and re-routed the ground cable to the frame... I then checkedthe voltage at the switch, full battery voltage when switched on!

With the electrical system back in operation it was time to adjust the passenger side valves... that job done.... it was time for the Stepper's Maiden Voyage into town... The only hiccup was when I stopped at my work the water pump decided to pee coolant on the parking lot...
Back in 2012, shortly after getting the Stepper and engine, I bought a serpentine belt setup complete with Brackets, P/S pump, Alternator, A/C compressor and Water pump for $100... the P/S pump started leaking shortly after getting the engine running, but thanx to Lucas P/S stop leak, that leak has stopped. The Alternator was replaced after the new wiring harness was installed, and at that time the water pump was hanging in there still... So tomorrow after work a new water pump will be installed... Rian is supposed to be here Wednesday so I plan on driving the Stepper to work Wednesday...

Later guyz... Pics comming soon!

Re: Donz '65 SWB Stepper Budget Build...

Thanx Brotha!!!

Yes, Awesome to finally drive for more than a mile or so up and down a gravel road...

Today's a bit bittersweet for me... Wishing' I was waking up about 3 hours NW of here for Clem's bash, but Life stepped in and changed those plans...
Instead, I'll drive the Stepper about 20 wiles west and put it in a Car show a friend is involved with... Although not finished it will still be fun!

Awhile back, MarkeB01 offered up some items, and I was fortunate enough to be the recipient of a few items... One of the items was a rear-view mirror that attaches to the roof, (I believe that was a 60-63 feature) so yesterday I installed that mirror.

As you can see in this pic, the mirror originally in the Stepper when purchased was discolored on the face and distracting when using... Tape in place to mark and drill...
Untitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr

Holes drilled and ready to mount...
Untitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr

Mounted and you van see the Number plate taped in the back window... It has now been re-located to the proper location at the rear... Sorry, forgot to get a pic of that...
Untitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr

Finally, a pic of the Vintage Number Plate that I got with the Stepper...
Untitled by Donald Olivo, on Flickr

Quick question... What's the easiest way to remove the mirror button that's glued to the windshield???

Enjoy your day Guyz and Galz!!!

That's interesting Don. My truck has the roof mounted rearview mirror. As far as I can tell it came from the factory that way.

I love the pic of Rian in your truck. I myself would frame that picture.
