Where is this steering box available? Mine leaks like a seive and I was hoping to find a quick ratio box. There was a place in the Northwest I spoke to that said there's no such thing as a quick ratio box for our trucks. If there is, I'd love to hear about it...

haha I'm sorry about that, but I think your fine either way, and I've never heard of the quick ratio gear box, so that's new for me, and I think the 10 bolt will be fine, I think everyone swaps the 12 bolt just for piece of mind

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)

sure they make quick ratio boxes...but if you're asking for a stock replacement then no they don't.

AGR makes steering boxes and has there original series and the "super truck box" and super truck box "2" series. You'll want a 12:1 for quick ratio. 13-16:1 variable is what I've been considering since this truck will also see drag strip duty.

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)

glad to help....and only on the square bodies...

A TBSS is a great vehicle as long as your cool with burning premium and getting 12-16mpg...except for the guys that either change their rear gear or add a few more. We like ours....does all we need...and a little more!

Good to know, I wasn't sure.

Thanks!

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)

Between poor mpg's, and the hefty payment we decided to get out from under it. We found a tahoe, and will have it paid off a lot quicker so when my daughter turns 16 here in a few years we will be ready to get her something.

I found out not long ago that I guess someone had tuned our SS, and didn't take the tune out when they sold it. That is why we were getting such poor mpg's. We were avg around 10 in town, and best I got was about 15 on all highway trip. It's all good though. We hated to sell it, but it was the practical thing to do. Wow that was harder to say than I thought.

That's what happened to my CTS-V, too. Practicality. My Mustang might not be practical either, but it's paid for!!

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)

The guy that bought mine had a Cobalt SS that someone rear ended and totaled. He told his wife that since they are looking at starting a family they might as well get a SUV. So it can work. Any help you need with Amy just let me know. Holly really misses ours. Once she drives it she will love it. That can be a good or bad thing.

Just tell her it's for the kids you want to have. She'll be so excited about that she won't care what you buy.

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)

I had a tbss also and got rid of mine for several reasons main one being how much it was costing me in payments, gas (rwd w/15mpg avg), maintenance and all of the above. I also have a daughter and it was a little tough getting her in and out of her car seat in those small back doors.
The thing I like about the tbss vs. the srt8 is that you can actually pull a trailer and load the tbss down w/cargo... can't do that in the jeep.

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)

That SRT8 jeep is hard to beat, not only by SUV standards, but in general. Maybe Im wrong, but theres something about a 400hp AWD SUV that sounds like a muscle car and beats the majority of sports cars that makes me want one.

12bolt truck axle is NOT the same as a 12bolt car. The pinion on the 12bolt truck is smaller. The 10 bolt is the same strength and it has a bigger/stronger pinion. It is not worth the effort to find a 12bolt, save your money and time and just upgrade the 10bolt. If you don't plan to drag race it every day with slicks on it you will be fine.

As for the AGR steering box. It is just a rebuilt factory box. Bought one when they were MUCH cheaper 10 years ago on a GB. It isn't a quick ratio box. If you find a rebuilt one cheaper, just buy it. If you call AGR they will tell you this also. IF you want better/quicker steering, you need a R&P setup.
