Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

(took it for a spin around though). Isn't that such a good feeling

It has been raining a ton in upstate NY so I actually don't feel bad that it wasn't on the road yet.
I know that feeling. It seems like every time I bought a motorcycle the rainfall was above average

Haha it is a good feeling until I came to the end of the road with no plates on the truck and debated on going for a real spin haha.

My old man is going to grab the plates today or tomorrow so that is a relief. Had to get a new bill of sale yesterday so that is situated.

I have a little bit of a lean to the driver's side so I need to see what is going on there this weekend and also get a few odds and ends done. Pictures later.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

We should start a "varmits in our projects" thread.

Mine had rats, black widows, a bird's nest and unidentified excrement when I found it.

Did some prep work on the frame so someone who actually knows what they're doing with a welder can just jump in and do the fix:

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

finally took the spare tire out of the back under the truck. I was dreading those rusty bolts, but they came off almost finger tight with some WD-40. Raised the back up about a half inch. when I get the gas tank back there, it will go back down.

Where do you guys keep the jack and handle? I used to wire tie them to the inside of the spare wheel to keep them from rattling. Now they are wire tied to the bolt in spare tire cross member.
Also, now I have 4 original wheels for sale, and this one has a new BFG 235/70/15 on it.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

finished installing the sound deadener complete, it was hard getting that stuff into the doors (both sides) and easy doing the the door panel lol, also installed the radio although havent wired it yet.
yesterday I installed the drivers side one piece glass but am NOT happy about how the glass was cut. I am working a deal with a couple glass guys for 4 pcs) 4'x4' dark smoked tempered glass that I think is 5/16" thick but might be 1/4"(not sure yet). Excited about this as it should be enough to do my truck, wifes suburban, and possibly the 39 2 dr sedan. WOO HOO

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Checked into insuring my 52. Classic/ antique coverage
I have the basic, Lability/ uninsured coverage.
I was wanting full coverage .
But it ain't going to happen.
Some companies Limit mileage ( no daily driver)
No commuting ( only to and from Shows )
But they all "Want it kept in a Garage"

Theft is my main worry

Insurance companies are such a PITA! And I know what you mean about thieves. we never had that problem here but now is a different story.
Sunday night we lost 80 gallons of diesel fuel.

I just got off the phone with Hagerty.
They said it must be Garage kept when not in use.
Looking like my agent is right.
No one will cover it unless I keep it in a enclosed covered structure when not in use.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Hager try is excellent from what I hear and check out AAA. They quoted me 275.00 a yr for 35K coverage but limited to 5K miles a yr in driving

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

I gave up
Then went back to the transmission cross member that I wasn't going to use. Turned out that it was in about the right spot after all I just welded a new perch for the transmission mount. I think I will add some gussets tomorrow.

The rivets didn't give up easily, but finally got the gusset to come out. Easy access now for the frame rail fix...

Maybe it's the engineer in me but I have significant concerns. It looks like the top frame rail has been poorly repaired once before. We can see the side is rotten. I assume the bottom is just as bad. It is next to the spring shackle. When the truck is rolling the top rail wants to compress, bottom rail goes in tension and side distributes the forces to the spring shackle. It looks like the frame has already started to fail. I would pull the cab so you can access the complete frame in detail, usually that much damage is not an isolated thing.

IF there is good metal on either side AND you want to use it I would be putting in long fish plates, not relying on butt welds or small patches. It would be a shame to put in all the effort to restore the truck only to find your effort compromised the first time you hit a swale, railroad track or parking lot entrance a little too fast and find the frame bent in the middle and the truck dodging into the other traffic lane at speed.

It's your truck you can do what you want with it, but if safety is compromised someone else may get hurt.

Thanks, OrrieG! I really appreciate the feedback. That piece on the top frame rail is one of four, on each corner where the bed sits. Pretty sure there was a flatbed on the frame at one point. I've spent a lot of time under this thing - - The rest of the frame is solid. Thankfully, I've got someone with 30 years of welding/fabrication experience who has seen the truck in person and is doing the fix so I can a least hopefully take it for a drive or two this year.

The plan after that is to take everything off and restore the whole frame in one shot, as soon as I can find an inexpensive place to do it indoors. No garage here at the house. Kills me to leave the thing outside but there's nothing I can do other than cover it. I've got the cleaned up bed pieces in the basement, but I don't think the frame will fit!

Thanks again...

I agree If it were mine I would do a frame swap! There are just too many nooks and crannys that are questionable
