I was seriously looking at putting the gas door on the front side of the fender. But it definitely looking like it was going to take quite a bit of work. It would have given me a little bit more elevation of the gas neck above the gas tank. The S10 door has a slight radius in a single direction, which I was able to straighten out very easily. The radius on the '48 is going in two directions. I was planning on saving the hinge and replacing the skin and fabricate a new recess.

I'm happy with the way it came out and it was not that difficult to do. But in the fender would have definitely looked awesome.

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build

I got the driver side bed side and fuel door sanded and in epoxy primer.

I received my Gel coat and PVA, so I decided to get the wheel tub mold cast today. This didn't come out too bad. I have a few other things going on before I try to cast one of the tubs.

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build

Another full day of body work. I opened a couple of windows in the rear cross support, where I could access the top of the license plate recess. I added a filler piece below the tail gate to get rid of the ugly gap. I also welded out the edges of the roll pan. Just a little more sanding and I can get this primed.

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build

I at least got all of the rear sheet metal primed, except the driver side fender. Now it can rain all it wants. I got a lot done, but I cut the gap a bit close on the rear roll pan. I will go back and fix this later. It looks a lot better without the huge gap that was there before.

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build

I finished welding the tail light housings in the driver side fender and have the All-metal body filler applied and sanded out. I will prime it tomorrow.

I decided to work on the gas filler neck, and the neck housing. This wound up being a pain to fabricate, but for the most part, it is done. The bottom mounting hole is almost in line with the housing side wall. I still need to add a bit of a recess to clear the cap screw. I also need to do a bit more clearance grinding to clear the door hinge.

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build

I added the recess and final bolting pad to the gas neck housing. I roughed in the body work and shot it with some epoxy primer. I will do the final touch ups later.

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build

I decided to cast one of the wheel tubs to kill the rest of the day. I made some final touch ups on my wheel tub mold and prepped it with some PVA. One good coat of gel coat and I laid 4 layers of glass. I will pop this out of the mold tomorrow. I want to get both cast, where I can cut the bed sides for the wheel clearance. I also need to install the bed side angle pieces.

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build

Thanks 99! I appreciate the words of encouragement, but I'd probably starve to death from being too slow. . . LOL

Well for my first molded fiberglass part, it didn't come out too bad. I did wind up with the few small areas on the bottom flange on one side that I need to fix. Other than that, its not too bad for the first attempt. I will try to cast the other one next weekend.

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build

I received my stainless exhaust pipe and welding wire and started fabricating one of my exhaust tips. The wire welder did okay, but I wish I had my TIG welder working. I don't have a garage where I can set it up. I guess that I need to stop working on the truck and build a garage. . . Or not.

I need to modify the front lower corner of the receiver box. The corner is visible below the running board. I will cut and round the corner to make it less visible.

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build

Here are a few shots of the exhaust tips. I have the tips sticking out 1" from the edge of the running boards. I don't think that they will be too much of a shin knocker. Just enough where you can see them good.

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build

Not a whole lot of progress today. I pulled the driver side exhaust tip back off and rounded the front lower corner. I also completed the fabrication on the passenger side exhaust tip, and got it mounted under the running board. I still need to fabricate the exhaust tip inlets.

Very nice work on the exhaust tips. I really like how they exit and the theme matches the hood.

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build

Well I've been kicking the can down the road long enough, so I decided this morning to start on the passenger side door. I measured and marked the door and inner door skin and cut them to match. I tacked the inner skin and test fit on the truck. As careful as I was, I still had to re-cut the inner skin to adjust the fit. I had to cut 1/4" out of the front side of the inner door skin. I was able to get the skin re-tacked and re-checked the fit.

nice, where is the patch from? I made mine by hand. The corners were the hardest part.

These are Dynacorn re-pops. It is actually not a bad looking piece. It had a couple of areas that I will have to touch up, but it beats me having to try to reproduce the panels. This truck is the only sheet metal experience that I have. I might have attempted to make the repairs now without these panels, but I bought them last year, so I might as well use them.

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build

Here are a few shots of the inner and outer skin replacement. After rolling the side and lower edges, I re-hung the door and checked the fit. I had to cut and bend the window frame out to align with the top of the opening. I have a lot of work yet on correcting the gap around the door.

Re: Harold's '48 S10 LS1 Build

Working on the door gaps today. I shaved the drip rails over the doors, which left me with a large gap over the doors. I added a strip to the top of the door to close the gap up. I still have a little touch up to do with some All-Metal on the inside of the door frame.

The gap on the back side of the door was too close. I had to grind the lip back and weld the edge. I am doing a short section at a time and rough grinding it close. I will apply some All-Metal and do all of the final sanding of the edges when I get all of the edges fixed.
