That are damn cool to see aren't they? I love customs and I love hot rods. But seeing these trucks stock and just doing their job, it's just cool to see.

What's cool to think about is that some of the old trucks in these photos could belong to forum members today and they might not even realize that's their truck in the pic!

This is a cool one. How many of us spent time in the bed of a truck when we were that age? I know I did, wasn't a Chevy, it was a 55 F-100 that my dad had a 364 Buick Nailhead installed in 1966. I spent a LOT of time out there going down the highway.

I am curious as hell about these two photos.



This sure as heck looks like the same truck but in very different condition. And the guys too, the guy on the right looks the same (he does NOT like to smile) in both photos.



Is the first picture from when they first opened "North Hollywood Television" and they had some beat up old truck that they then had painted and that is what we see years later in the second photo? They look like the same truck, things like where the tie down hooks are, that is not just some random spot, that's kind of an odd spot for them to be yet the truck in both photos has them there, and the license plate mount is exactly the same, the rack is exactly the same, I think it's the same truck that got painted.

Is the guy on the left the same guy and it's years later where he has lost his hair?

Ok, I found these photos on the net and am posting them along with the story under them. I was WRONG, the photo of the truck looking better was taken 5 years before the other!



(1950)* - Valley Times photo caption reads "Marty Faust and Rod Boutelle, co-owners of North Hollywood Television store, prepare to deliver another TV set to one of their customers. After three years of operation the store is one of the largest retail television stores in Valley." The store was located at 11413 Moorpark Street in North Hollywood.



(1955)* - Rod Boutelle, right, owner of North Hollywood Television, helps load a Packard-Bell color TV set on delivery truck as he prepares to observe his seventh anniversary at his North Hollywood location, Moorpark at Tujunga. Assisting him is Ralph Voit, service manager."


So in the first photo said to be 1950 "Mr. Smilie" Rod Boutelle is an owner of the store and the other guy Marty Faust is his partner in the business. Then now looking at it, the second photo Mr. Smilie looks even more haggard so it must be a later photo as they say in 1955. The second photo, there is no Marty, I am thinking Mr. Smilie drove him out of the business with his crappy attitude.

The first photo it's a early technology black and white where the second photo it's a new and advanced COLOR tv, WHOOO HOOO! Do any of you remember seeing a color tv for the first time, wow! We used to go to a friend of the families house on Sunday to watch "Wonderful world of Disney" in color, no kidding!

So it does look like the truck looked better in the first photo, but I can't believe other than those tie down hooks that it's the same truck. I can't believe they would have painted it different and in five years it could look so bad, is that possible? Those hooks really do say something to me, unless you guys have other thoughts on that, was this a dealer installed location or something like that? Those look like they are in the exact same location.

It's so funny, there is a business here in town owned by a "Mr. Smilie" and I just went there yesterday and picked up my lawn tool he fixed. This guy is such a downer it's insane! I want to tell him "go back into the shop and do that work and hire someone to talk to customers." He is HORRIBLE when talking to customers, wow, holy crap. He REALLY needs to get someone to do that, his business would be much better if he did that.

That's the realm of mechanics. They're smart and they love what they do. But they hate people! Mr. Smilie OTOH should have realized that he needed to hire sales staff if he wasn't built for the task.

As far as the hooks, I'm going to guess they were installed by the same guy/business. Mr. Smilie types have one thing in common: When they find something they approve of they buy it again and again. So if he liked the cover or hooks that were installed on the first truck he would have had all the rest built the same. It makes him smile on the inside.

If you look at this photo you can see that Mr. Smilie was doing well enough to order a Cameo truck for deliveries, yet he still had boards installed in the bed with similar hooks.

Its funny you posted links to the water and power site. My brother is in town from Belgium and we were talking just last week about the house we grew up in. He started going on about how he found photos of where our house was from before it was ever developed(built in 1933, I think) and he gave me the link to the water and power site. Really cool. Lots of stuff from well before my time. Even my pops that grew up in LA was blown away with pics he had never seen of the city developing.

Thank you. Love the pic. Brings back so many memories of my youth. I drove an unrestored, beat up 52 Suburban from LA to SF and Then onto Jersey Shore PA and ultimately Seneca Falls NY before it kinda died. Poor thing lost the oil breather somewhere crusing Sunset Blvd Hollywood, lost oil and developed a rod knock just before the trip. Only mention it as 45MPH was top speed without tossing rod thru block. One long memorable trip and began my admiration for ADs. Why i still have the one below since 1967.
