I am at home today if you are about. Don't have a full compliment of wheel nuts, think I have 12 or 14, but they are new so should get you out of trouble. As for rear lights, pre 66 so you are good to go with the reds. Didn't change mine and not had any problems with 2 MOT's and being stopped by the Plods. They wanted to have a quite word in my ear about the excessive smoke emanating from the rear of the vehicle when I pulled away from the traffic lights...Ahem.... P.

Well I have decided to build my own as was always crap with Airfix stuff - spent more time glueing my hands together than building a kit.... So, at 11.03 this is what Woodys chassis looked like - not a lot more I can take off eh. The start by Paul Yewman, on Flickr WRONG! 90 minutes later.... I think that the car...Hobby? is one of the few that you can walk away from for a number of years and pick right up where you left off. Fortunately.... Bit more chassis cleaning tonight but not going to bore people with more pictures of me covered in crud. Hopefully a little more of a meaningful update in the next week or so as I stop taking Woody apart and start putting him back together. Onwards!! P.

Well I spent some money... After pricing up the cost of steel, borrowing a pipe bender, buying a new welders - mine "might" be man enough to cope with the steel, and after a discussion with our very own Mr Stanger I decided to purchase the Summit frame brace as the price difference was negligible. If I had waited another week I would have e been saving money such are the vagaries of the Pound/Dollar exchange rate... Brace is currently mid ocean. I have also spent some more cash on a pot sandblaster after the 'Knott Wheel of Truth(tm) failed to get into the nooks and crannies and I read the instructions on the Steel-It can that recommended a rough texture to the steel to make it adhere. Still getting to grips with it as so far I have only managed to spread 2 bags of media around the shed rather than remove anything vaguely related to paint, or corrosion, from a metal object. I thought that my compressor was man enough for the job but was proven wrong - which leads me onto a small detour but a great story....

So here is a short tale that I am sure will spawn others and it all started with a sand blaster....
A quick recap. Woody now down to bare chassis, decided to blast the frame, bought sandblaster from Johnny Bravo, my big compressor not man enough for the job. Right, lets get on with it then shall we. The way to make the blaster work is to increase the air capacity so a quick look on eBay turns up a 200ltr compressor about 10miles from home for the princely sum of £25- the plan being that I will use the tank from this to give me enough air to get the job done. Arrange to meet the seller, Steve, at his place of work, jump in the Super Fiesta(tm) with #3 Son and head off into the sunset. The thing about Essex, well one of the many things, is that you will always meet somebody that says, I designed that when it comes to a Ford and Steve was no exception. As I pulled up the rear seat base to make room for the compressor he suddenly pipes up with - when I designed that there was supposed to be a pin in the hinge so you could take the seat out completely but it got overruled as Ford thought that people would take the seats out and lose them - and so began an hours chat with one of the most interesting guys I have met in a long time. Started talking about why I needed the tank, which then got onto cars I had owned before he smiled and said, let me show you my Mustang, pulls out his phone and there is a picture of a 69 or 70 Mustang parked in his front garden being used as a planter! Conversation continues and he then says do you want to see what I am working on now? Cue another flick through his phone and there is a picture of him standing next to an AC Cobra. Now my thought is, rough looking kit car, but my new bestie can already sense that coming and says its a real one and it has a story. I am hooked. Without going into too many personal details it appears that his father worked at Fords on special projects, one of which was the Cobra. Steve didn't really remember the Cobra when he was growing up but after his Dads past away one of Steves older brothers wrote him a letter in which he talked about the car and the fact it was still - I assume - at the family home. Problem was it was in a very poor state, the body was wrecked and the engine, a 427, was buried in the back garden! As he put it there was no value in crashed old cars back then so it was just pushed into a corner and forgotten. It must have been in a bad way as he laughing told me that the body was 2" shorter on one side than the other where he had beaten it back into shape... The point of this little tale, cars bring people together and everybody has a story to tell, just some are better than others. And I now have all the air I will need to get Woody a step closer to the road and a new friend with a Cobra... Bruummm Bruuummm Not Steves actual car!

So...Updates...
There will be some shortly but right at this moment in time work is going mental ( I am the CEO of a 3 year old start up providing location software for the logistics industry so we are a 'little busy') I have 80% of everything I need to get Woody back to a running driving truck, well apart from a T56 or magnum gearbox, it is just finding the time when I am not required to be a Dad, fix the house, mow the grass, walk the dogs look after my parents blahblahblah... So if anybody has a cheap cheap T56 they want to contribute to the cause hit me up, otherwise I fear that my target of picking my Christmas tree up will be next year rather than this. Watch this space - will try and get 2 days in the shed before the end of August to at least blast the chassis, run the fuel and brake lines and get the fuel tank in place. Or not... Stay tuned. P.

I am, and will always be, a hooligan. As for getting anything done... well... no. Brace still mid ocean, work not showing any signs of slowing down - THANK GOODNESS!! - and trying to get the house ready for winter. Plus doing a fund raise... Will eventually get round to doing something before the weather turns - namely painting the chassis- so please beat with me as I try, and fail miserably, to get my life in some semblance of order... How the goodness gracious did it get to be March already....
Anyway, since my last missive I spent a lot of time exploring what I didn't like about this hobby, delving in to the deep recesses of my smooth brain and chanted, ad nausium, THIS IS NOT A SHOW TRUCK. So where are we then... Spent way too long making my compressor up to the job of running the sand blaster and then even longer trying to find somebody that would sell me the beast media at a price that made it worth while doing. The first nice weekend after the snow resulted in my dragging the chassis outside and starting the blasting process. What I learnt from this process is that it will be the last time I blast a chassis - what an absolute pig of a job. Its not so much the pointing the hose at the chassis and pulling the trigger but all the faffing around with the media, unblocking the gun, sifting the used media, unblocking the hose, collecting the media, etc etc.... Anyway, the end result was a nicely textured surface free of dirt and grime and ready for me to paint. I was going to use 2 pack as I did on my 56 but ended up going with this stuff after glowing reports from a friend of mine who builds off roaders. Seeing it on Hoonigan when they made the Merch truck also made me think it might be worth a try. So today was the day that I decided to stop procrastinating , weather was nice so swept the floor in the garage put the chassis up on tall stands and set the heater on high. After shaking the can for a good 10 minutes and still not hearing the balls rattling to my satisfaction had a brain wave and hooked the can up to my imitation sawzall and presto chango balls were rattling in no time at all. And the end result... From this... To this... Well I am really pleased with it. Paint covers very well, took 2 cans to get it to this stage, and will use another one when I flip it over to paint the top and go over the rest of the chassis again. Next step is to fit the fuel and brake lines, then put the suspension back together, fit the fuel tank and finally place the engine between the rails. This should go quite quickly as I have all of the components but then again life might still get in the way again to slow the whole process down! Until the next time... Onwards!!!! P.

Progress continues, all be it slowly.
Not sure how many of you out there have got/used a pot blaster but they have to be- simultaneously - both the most useful and frustrating tool ever invented! The biggest thing I have learnt and would like to share with you, the dear reader is this... Don’t Reuse the media. It is a false economy. You will end up spending hours collecting it, sifting it and then taking the gun apart to unclog it when you didn’t get all of the debris out of the grit. I bought 5 bags of glass media at £8 per bag and wish I had got 10. Anyway, Spent all day today taking the front crossmember from this. Via this To this. And I would say that 4 hours of this was collecting the media, spent sifting the media and unblocking the gun. Hateful. Good news is that I only have 3 pieces left to do and 5 more bags of media on the way... It’s still not a show truck. P.
