Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E

Well its been a while since I updated the thread. I've been on the road working for a few weeks and when I got home the plan was to get the truck ready to paint next week...then I discovered a rookie problem I made: I didn't check the doors enough to see that they lined up the same on both sides.

So, I was just going to buy a donor cab and do the switch, but the guy I made a deal with for the donor cab flaked on me and reneg'd the deal we had. :-(

That left me to recut my cab and reweld me patches. Should be done this week on that but it throws out my schedule to paint the truck next week while my wife is away. The magazine picture is what I"m trying to get my gaps to look like now.

Good news is my dash arrived from Chuck and it looks very good! I got some extra vinyl too to do the headliner when I get to that point.

That is a good looking dash! Could you post some more close ups of all the seams? I was going to sew a cover for my self and was trying to decide on the best locations for the seams. The area that you have in the picture is the area I was having problems in. Yours is clean and simple, looks great! Thanks.

So here are some pics of breaking down my boxes to get them sandblasted. The blue one is the original, the black one is the back up and was in better condition so I'll use the best pieces of each.

Re: "The Ayatollah of Rusty Hole'a 1987 SWB 6.0 4L80E

here's a few of my brother's '76 that maybe he'll redo one day.

The grey one is my parts truck...the PO put in a custom grill --- with a hot glue gun that dripped all over!

There are a few of my other trucks too but they are very dusty!!

We built this hood on my white truck out of a C60 1965ish hood I found at the dump, my bro did most of the welding on it!

Might make a cowl hood for this truck too out of the old hood I found at the dump!

Alberta is called 'big sky country', here's a pic why:

Here I'm fooling around with chopping the old hood down seeing how it might work.

Before you send a bunch of posts saying it looks like crap; I'm not finished yet!! I need to think about how it will look painted --- if I can't imagine it, I'm going to just use the stock hood.

Stay tuned tomorrow for updates...

Hi there. I just saw this post. Would you happen to have any leftover swb fleetside box parts for sale? What are you doing with the grey '79 GMC? Thanks!

The boxsides were toast so they went to the scrapper. The other pieces I will use maybe on a CCSB.

I want to sell the grey truck soon...need the room.

After much trimming and chopping, I started tacking up the joints.

I like this height --- it's a little under 3".

Will have to extend it a bit but I have a good idea for that.

Your fabrication skills are amazing! Wish i knew how to do 1/4 of the stuff you can do with a welder. I'm not sure if i like the hood yet. I'm having a hard time imagining it on the truck. You still have a stock hood if this doesn't work out?

I learn as I go with a welder...and my brother tells me not to get the metal too hot!

Stay tuned....it's not done yet!

Bought a 77 SWB today that has a 80 front grill on it. Little old 305 in it that will get yanked at some point.

So-so shape, but came with new rubber, decent box, Bell Tech lowering kit, new dash pad, cluster with tach got some other fenders too....pretty good deal in my opinion!

really interested in the dash.... where did you have to take it to get it wrapped and stiched like that???

any local upholstery shop? also, is it genuine leather or some other sort of material?

I only ask because I'd still be worried about the material cracking with the amount of exposure to heat and cold that dashes get... amazing build so far

Thanks! It's good, probably use it for a runner this summer as I'm trying to sell my Avalanche.

I'm still working on getting you those short box parts for your truck!
