Re: Project: Ginger

Hey Keith, I got tired of having all my friends do my welding for me (usuallly free and because of my inexperience) one of them let me borrow one of his welders and I decided to teach my self. My blazer was the learning platform. Wouldn't be without one now. Dont have to wait on some else to do it on their time frame and enjoy doing it myself, and there not really that expensive. Give it a try!

Re: Project: Ginger

From a rookie.. Its really pretty easy.. I am going to tackle my rockers, floor and cab supports this winter. If you want to come up for a weekend and help and learn let me know. However I am not sure I am doing it right myself.. i am just learning as I go. Also the cab roof thing should be a fun weekend too.. I am waiting to tear into that until I can move my gas tank to the rear of the truck away from all the heat. Just get a little miller for a few hundred bucks like I did.. Its plenty for sheetmetal. I actually might sell you mine someday when i step up to a larger one.

Just like Mcbassin said, if you were closer i would fix your rockers. Buy you a Good little 110 mig and start playing on some project. Heck put a rocker on one of your parts trucks for practice???? Nobody wanted to install rockers around here, so i had to figure it out. Im not a great welder, but damn good with a little grinder. Sell some of your parts LOL

Good luck

Thanks for all the replies.
I want to buy my own mig,... so I can practice this winter.
The blazer might not be one to practice on.
I need to replace the inner and outer rockers, and the panel between the rockers and the rear wheelwells.
But the big job is the rocker boxes.
The tub will have to be supported with proper door gaps,... while they are removed and replaced.
I have some flex when I take the roof off right now.
It screws with the door alignment, since the rocker boxes are so rusty.
So it's going to be a big job.
Plus I want it painted below the lower trim,... to match my faded original paint.
Right side door and fender also have a crease in them that I want repaired also.

I should probably leave it alone and just focus on Ginger.

Re: Project: Ginger

Great project. Keep up the great work.

I just started working on a 69 stepside I just picked up that was someones failed project. Took me three trips to get all the parts home. Yours has given me some inspiration. Thanks.

Definitely buy a MIG that is capable of using cover gas and not just flux core. You really need the solid wire with separate cover gas to do clean sheet metal welds. Get some 0.023" / 0.024" wire and a Q-size C25 gas cylinder when you buy your welder.

Once you get your MIG just have a friend who can weld come over and give you a few pointers to get you started in the right direction. It will help you tremendously and get you up & running.

Re: Project: Ginger

Keith,
I really like what you have done so far. I have a question for you, what are the part numbers that you used for the willwood manual master cilynder and proportiaing valve?
Thanks
Al

Re: Project: Ginger

Small update.
Started installing my Slosh Tubz this week.
I made a cardboard template and then transferred it to 24 ga. sheetmetal.
Installed my fender and threw on a 20" 338 just for this picture.
(I'm not using these wheels on this truck)

My left front fender has a small nasty dent that I need to work out.
It has the fenderwell opening teaked.
So I need to fix that before I can install the tub on the drivers side.

Sorry,... not much of an update.

I may have to take you up on that.
They will probably end up on my red '69 swb.
But I'll have to switch it to 5-lug first.
