Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

I do have a lot of toys in that garage! The vette is still in the basement too! Barbie vette that is...

It's a Miller 135 with bottle, gloves, cart, and a Jackson $150 helmet. paid $537 on Ebay... I would like a 180 but don't have 220v in the garage and really don't need it for much other than body work right now. The guy barely used it so I feel like it was a "safe" buy....

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

Picked up some new (kinda) parts today. Was flipping through craigslist and found some Flowmaster (40 series?) mufflers. He put an American Thunder catback system on his 5.0 mustang about 1,000 miles ago. Then wanted to change to Magnaflow based on the sound. so these are in "like new" condition. Seemed like a decent guy so hopefully they aren't stolen or something.... 2.5" ins and outs so now I am considering a pair of those corvette ramhorns. hmmmm....

Does anyone know what series Flowmasters come with the Amercian Thunder systems? It doesn't really say on the website.... I assume normal 40 series but it's just a guess...

Hey Mike,

Sorry I missed you when you were down south. The surgery knocked me down a little harder than I thought. The mufflers look like 40 series. You're definitely going to have nice rumble when you get them installed. Take care.

No problem, I didn't make it to many places that I wanted (junkyards, Pensacola, etc...) but I did get to New Orleans and the beach!

Picked up some more parts today at Carlisle. new Tri-plus front wood bed panel $100 and rear outer floor patches from Jerry Brown $52...

The California Truck SHop guys would have had a sale but decided to be rude "were not selling till tomorrow!", .....gee i'm sorry, I thought Carlisle started on Wednesday (today!).... They were still setting up....

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

Decided to flip the ole' cab up today and get a close look at this floor... oh my god... what have I gotten myself into?

If I hadn't of already purchsed all the floor patches, i mean all that they make! Then I would consider an entire floor swap or even looking for a rust free cab.

The undercoating that the PO kinda did the trick, but now I have to scrape it off by hand before I can get this rust bucket blasted! Just like the frame last summer....

I know that most of you guys would simply find another cab but I have to keep some of this truck original!

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

Here's the driver fender, finally pulled the inners off to see if these were keepers... Noticed that the PO had to fill a rust spot over the wheel arch, looks good from the outside but you can see the mud on the inside. Also noticed that they filled the side emblems... I know the cup needs replaced and a board member has a good transplant for me... what's your guys thoughts?

Keep or dump?

Here's the pass fender, not bad shape except for this bondo area in the lower rear corner...

Keep or dump?

Mike,
Man that brings back memories. The more pain up front, the better the blasting will come out. There were a few areas on mine that I missed and the blasting didn't take it off. The torch is your best friend...

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

I'm half tempted to buy one of those new floors with braces though... My floor is already patched up and rusted... I will scrape a little more and see how it comes out...

I had to scrape my entire frame with a torch and putty knife too!

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

Glad to see you making some more progress Mike!

as far as the fenders, I say keep them - in my opinion, they're pretty easily repaired. But then again, I've never worked with anything that would be considered "rust free".

keep at 'er man!

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

Here are some more detailed pics of the carnage that is my cab floor... I think the cab is in good shape, except the bottom 12" of it!

Looking like becoming a candidate for a Tri-Pro full cab floor with braces, then I can sell my floor pans and out rear patches....

FYI The cab is tipped upon its back... sitting on the frame..

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

and here's what I plan to make it all better... with a few more pieces of course... then cut the low hump out for my high hump ... will it ever end?

what do you guys think? Get it blasted, patch the crap out of, undercoat and be done... Or swap in the new $600+ floor and firewall?

JMHO, but I'd go with the 600.00 new floor board, if you patch up the old you will end up with a patched floorboard. If you put in the new floorboard no one will ever know, and you won't become that dreaded PO

BTW, subscribed...just read your whole build, very good work! Cool progress pics

ROAD TRIP LOL

I thought you were leaning towards saving the old floor? Who knows how long i'll keep this truck, maybe a long long time...

This is just my new hobby (2 years running!) so thanks for the words...

Re: 68 K-10 SWB build thread - project Money Pit...pics galore!

I'd say spend the money and go for the new floor as well. I've spent 6 months working on my cab and it wasn't as bad as yours. I guess at some point your time becomes just as valuable as your money. As long as the new floor is a good fit, just do it and be done with it. It's just money, you can always make more of it!!!

Sorry Mike to mislead, but I would do the whole floor from Tri-Pro

I bought it from the original owners son in Newburgh,NY (near west point,OCC etc..) It was built in Tarrytown,NY and lived its life as a mechanics truck, use to have a large push bumper and monster rear bumper with a towhook welded on it.

that's gonna be the plan. I just ordered a sand blaster attachment for my power washer so we'll see what's hiding in the nooks and cranny's.

I might not make it to Jon's until mid August, unless I plan a special road trip sooner. At $3.79 a gallon I don't see that happening though...

I have a Camry from Watertown.... I can send you some rust for memories if you want! I should send it to all these crazy guys in AZ and CA that whine about a little rust stain on their rockers...

Please don't!! Got enough rust here already thanks!

Yeah, my heart bleeds for those west coast guys...

On a serious note, was there any rust in the roof, windshield channel, or the driprail section on your truck?

Nope, the rear window has one little spot that will clean up with a little sanding. Everything else looks good. The frame had some bad spots, the insides of the bedsides are bad, outside good...
