Just an update - the mailman's son we were sending packages to over in Iraq, he came home a couple weeks ago. He earned the Purple Heart while was there but is in one piece and home on manditory leave. We were invited and strongly encouraged (almost ordered) to attend the family party for him when he got home. He turned 20 the day he got home. Met his Grandma who is a retired Col. (Army), she's a neat lady too. My wife and kids made a sheet sign for him to see hanging off a bridge on his way home from the airport. He said he didn't get to read it and barely saw it. So we gave it to him to keep. He and his family loved it! OF course the cameras came out for that too. He gave my daughter some Afghani money as a Thank You besides hugs for all the letters he got while he was over there since he didn't get very many.
It was really nice to meet him and his family. His one uncle could of played Wally Cleaver, I swear! lol Nice people though. In regards to his Purple Heart, he was the gunner on a HumVee on patrol and they ran over an anti-tank mine he said. He was propelled (ejected) through the roof! And caught some shrapnel in his legs, but he is ok now. But the driver didn't make it.
He doesn't feel like he deserves the medal with getting minor injuries with so many getting far worse injuries and not qualifying for it if it wasn't actual hostile fire that injured them. I have a cousin like that.
I have another friend in Kuwait now and due back soon. Another friend will be replacing him. We just mailed off three more packages to some troops we have adopted again.

I'm not military, my dad kinda discouraged me from going in. Said it wouldn't be the right life for me. He was Navy for 20 years and he also worked on the P3's at Squadron VP-62 at NAS JAX. He also worked on E2's at Miramar and worked for some "Rangers" squadron in the DFW area of TX.

I sometimes regret not going in...but then again, I think we should have a mandatory 2-year military service in this country with no exceptions to the rule also. I would have served happily in this case

I am proud of all the soldiers presently serving our country. Regardless of our political beliefs for its start, the men and women serving are among the finest you will ever meet. I saw one member bad mouthing the military and the camaraderie of service that comes with it. Speaking as a Gulf War veteran (90-91) with 5 years of active duty service and a 20% disability discharge, I feel confident to say that he is definitely in the minority. There is an unspoken closeness among military veterans, especially those who have been in combat together. I would love to see some of my old buddies from Germany (87-90) that I was stationed with. Those were some of the best times of my life. Seeing someone from Ft. Bragg and my last unit would be more difficult because of what it reminds me of. Everyone should know that the sacrifices soldiers make are great, and those who have suffered through the horrors of combat deserve our highest respect and support.

My Career

Active duty Air Force 1963 to 1967 mostly at Charleston AFB S.C.
Joined the Michigan ANG at Battle Creek in 1983 and worked full time there until I retired last year. Worked c-130s in active and a-37s and a-10s in the guard as a crew chief and flight chief.
Been to Italy for short tours, Sicily for Kosovo support and to Al Jabar for deny flight and enduring freedom. Was there for three months supporting the war. I hail all the military guys and gals still serving all over the world and my prayers are there for all in harms way.

Military Time

Spent my time in the U.S. Army in "civilian clothes" no less as Counter Intelligence Corps agent - known as "Silent Warriors" or "Spy Catchers". Most enjoyable moment was Korea 1958. The North Korean guerilla leader that was responsible for approximately 100 U.S. soldiers being captured, stripped of clothes, hands tied behind their back, made to kneel, and shot in the back of the head in early part of Korean War in 1950 and early 1951 was apprehended. This guerilla leader was sent down from North Korea on an espionage mission and was quickly caught in late 1958. He was my case. After interrogation, he was placed before a firing squad and shot by South Korean soldiers. He deserved it as he had no compassion or mercy on the U.S. soldiers that he executed!

I've proudly served for 10 years in the AF and will continue for 10 to 12 more. Being a "Army brat" myself, I have lived in the military for all of my life. Yeah I do miss some things IE (knowing your childhood friends as Adults) But what I don;t know I cannot miss.
I'm am a Muntions specialist (AMMO) if anyone know what that is.

God Bless America

Please support your Troops, they fight and shed their blood for you and me.

Flying A Desk These Days

USAF, going on 17 years total time. Air Cargo Specialist, Rhein-Main GE, C130H Loadmaster (4100 flying hours) Pittburgh ARS. Served in every major conflict since '89. Have been shot at by people I was trying to help. I like to think that I helped more good people live than bad people die. Fly a desk now as a retention manager. Tough job in wartime. Proud to serve with and for all the fine men and women on this board. Take care, Mike Todd, Msgt. (USAF)
