Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name
wow, I forgot about your truck!
How do you like the masterseries? I used that on my frame... are you going to epoxy or paint over it? Be sure to do it within two days or you'll have to scuff it... Looks good

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name
Forgot about my truck??!! How dare you...
I've used the Masterseries before and I'm beginning to like it more than the Rust Bullet. I think it is thinner and dries much quicker. It also seems to have a longer shelf life. I'm going to go directly over it with the Durabak, so hopefully I should be good to go. Think you'll finish before me? We should go cruising when we're both done

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name
Two posts in two days! Making good progress.
Today I sprayed the smooth Gray Durabak over the interior and the underhood skin. I bought a 2.8 nozzle for my Turbine HVLP system so I could spray. The first problem I ran into was that there were alot of small chunks in the durabak that I have to filter out. The usual paint strainers are way too fine and the Durabak wouldn't even go through it, so I had to come up with something else. Ended up using 220 grit drywall sanding screens. Worked pretty well. It did not spray as well as I was hoping, as it spattered quite a bit. I could have thinned it a bit with Xylene, but it was kind of runny as it was, so I had to settle. I was really hoping to put this on nice and thick, but it wasn't going to happen. I'm going to see how it is when it dries and I'll go from there. I can always brush or roll it on too, but I wanted a smooth finish. Oh well. I'll post more pics after it dries.

Uh oh! Finally busted...
I've been really bad about updating this lately. I have made some progress and hope to post some new pics tonight. Thanks for keeping me honest

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name
Ok, well here's a little update. I wasn't happy how the smooth Durabak sprayed, it seemed too thin and runny, so I bought some more of the Durabak with the rubber particles in it and rolled on a few coats over the smooth coats. I like it much better and it seems to be more durable. If I wanted to, I should be able to hose off the interior without worrying about rust.
I also did the underside of the hood skin with it and then painted all the framing with gloss black Masterseries paint. So now the rush is on to get the cab/doors/fenders/hood ready for the painter. Yes, I have made the decision to outsource the paint simply because I think it will take me a year to prep it all myself and after all that time I would want a professional job. I found a guy in MD, http://www.mikescustompainting.net/Home.html who is really nice and does good work. He's charging me $2000 for a complete paint job for all that. That might increase when he sees it...Tax return will go to that... Told him I already have everything epoxy primed, and that he'll just need to do some filling, block sanding and finish from there. No assembly since I'm giving it to him in pieces and want it back in pieces. Then I should be able to fly putting it all together...

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name
I've been going to a 67-68 GMC front end all along. So I have that 67 chevy grille that I will end up selling unless I decide to use it on my 71 Blazer if I convert that to a 67-68 front clip

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name
I knew you would be pinging me for progress! I'm still doing bodywork, but should be making some posts this weekend. I'm getting close to paint, but I've been saying that for about 9 months!

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name
I just went back through your build. How's that paint system doing with primer? I know you said that you found a good painter in your area for $2K, of course that was 2007 prices!!!
Let me know if you want to sell that turbine system when your done too. Might come in handy on my build as it is low on funding as well.

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name
Well although the photos are not that exciting, I did reach a pretty exciting milestone today. I'm happy (finally) with the panel gaps and alignment. I drilled my alignment holes in all the panels and took them off for the last time. Next time they go on they will be painted! I'll be painting all of the panels off the truck.

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name
Took the day off to finish some progress I made this weekend. I finished all the major body work on the cab and sealed it all in a coat of epoxy primer. I then went to town with the self leveling seam sealer on the rain gutter (went on like a dream). After then I switched to the regular seam sealer for everything else.
Then sealed all that with another coat of epoxy. This morning I laid on two wet coats of 2k Primer. I bought this from SPI in black, so I can really see where I need to do more work. Finally some visible progress...I took advantage of Eastwood's 25% off sale on Monday so I have plenty of sandpaper comin...

Re: 72 K20 build thread, need good name
Mike,
Sorry, not sure how I missed this post on the 23rd! Yes, I welded up that seam. I'm pretty much getting rid of any seams in the body. I am hell bent on stopping any future rust areas. This thing will float when I am done... Great to see you at Carlisle. Wish I had found some more stuff to buy, but funds were tight. Make sure you post some pics if you decide to weld the truck door hoop to that burb NOS door!
