Re: Meet Project Red, White, and Blue

Thanks, its a long road ahead! I think my frame work was overkill, and there should be a pic somewhere of my frame where is was cut and rewelded. They did it right, but with me pushing 400hp in the BB 454. I don't want the frame coming apart. lol

Re: Meet Project Red, White, and Blue

I am going full throttle on mine, we have a car run Labor day weekend in Billings MT called "Burning the point", the name comes from what the '70's kids called cruising around town. There is a Car show and swap meet. I have a lot to do in a short few months (if the bank account can take the hits ), so wish me luck!

Re: Meet Project Red, White, and Blue

Lucky for me I don't have too much rust and no body work to speak of. Already have the donor engine and trans, just need 3.08 diff, disc brakes, and misc. a/c parts. Oh yeah and paint, Maybe Hugger Orange or Kelly Green. The truck was white w/ red interior.

Re: Meet Project Red, White, and Blue

Well, after a week of trying to get prices and replys about brakes, and no replys and no prices from vendors (i know everyones busy), i'm going to go with a set of D52 front wilwood calipers and pads from Ebay, and use all new Drum set up in the rear (napa), at least that will give me my ebrake and won't set me back $800. I can upgrade in the future, but for now i need to get moving on this project.

Just read through the whole thread. Nice work!!! It amazes me what can be done with a rusty NE truck. Love that seat too.

Thanks to Tim (slomotion) for this one. All refurbed with new parts, i will have to find a good printed circuit, and It has the choke hole, and its not right for my 72, but its so pretty i don't care!!

Thanks.
My dad has a 454 that is built. I'm going to use instead of building the 402.

Re: Meet Project Red, White, and Blue

That looks like a pretty good score you have there. BBC, swb pretty solid looking. Did they shorten the frame or swap cab/box onto a short frame? I have some killer connections in the midwest and I still have lots of parts out there. Just let me know what you need and I'll see what I can do to help... Of course, I still haven't got mine pulled out of the weeds yet... Happy building !!

Thanks for the parts offer, might hit you up on that.

The PO claimed it was a true short bed BB truck, i checked it out (in the snow) and it showed no signs of frame being cut. but the SPID code for SWB was something i missed. one of the guess on here saw it and said it was a longbed BB truck.
When i pulled the bed off, i found the welded seem. He claims he knew nothing about it, but i'm not sure i believe him.
Get yours outta the weeds and get workin! lol

Re: Meet Project Red, White, and Blue

Thought i'd toss in an update. Nothing to update. I'm disgusted with my progress, I am stuck at a cross road with $ and time, between work, lazyness, kids, bills, and lack of knowledge i'm ready to toss in the towel on this one.
I'm stuck and brake and fuel lines, no clue how to run them or pipe the new Boyds tank, and trying to get the cab to the body shop. The state has to come give me a new rebuilt vin if i use said cab, which won't match the frame and the motor. Can't find a good shortbed floor for my bed, the list goes on and on. Ugh what a pitb.
Amazing how much it wears you down when you get to a point. Should have bought a done truck.
Anyway, rant over.

Re: Meet Project Red, White, and Blue

So change of powerplant for this build. Yesterday i bought a GM "SRTA" 4l80e rebuilt tranny for $100. It has 100 miles on it, took it from a 95 van and its been in his garage for while, with that i decided a LQ4/9 is in my future. The 454 i wanted to use is still available, but i think the old man wants to put it in his next blazer. Fine with me, i want better mileage than the 454 will give me.
So the work to save $ and fine a good LQ4/9 is on. Biggest issue will be wiring (i have no clue on what i'll need) and fuel. Going to spend some time reading over on the LSX swap pages.
Going to order up brake lines here pretty quick also.

I used a Howel harness for my wiring. Well worth the money.

Fuel lines will need to be the fuel injection lines. When i plumbed my Ranger, I used the nylon line you can get from Napa. My C10 has the overpriced stuff from Earl's. Fuel pump can be simply an in-line setup like on the corvettes, or in-tank setup. I have the in-tank setup and it works great.

The 6-0 is a gas guzzling torque monster. If you're set on it, I understand. If not, I'd go 5.3 and bore it out to a 5.7. Use a Z06 cam and springs, factory or LS1 heads, an LS6 intake, and a gnarly tune. You will pull 18-20 mpgs and looking real close to 400hp.

Thank you, great info. I'll check out that wiring. I already have a Boyds tank, but its the standard tank, i'll have to use a inline set up, and use the spare bung for the return.
The 6.0 is that bad on fuel? Only reason i thought of using it was because its plenty full, and has more wallup than a 5.3. I don't have a good engine person around here that is reasonable to do a bore and rebuild. I'm checked and its more money than i can swing, so for now i'm going to get a good running motor, tranny combo, put it all in, make sure exhaust, fuel, wiring, and such is in good shape and working, then maybe a nice done up motor in the future. Budget is my biggest enemy at this point.
Thank you very much for the input, i greatly appreciate it.
Glen
