My Big Fat Renovation

Well, it fits. There's a few feet around the back and a couple around the sides. It's tight. I really wish the garage was 6' wider, it's 24' deep by only 22' wide

I have a really crappy tin shed out back (the base is rusting out and the ceiling is waaaay too low), BUT it's on a nice 10x10 pad. I'm going to build a new shed that's 10x10 w/ 8' walls, and on the side it will have what will look like an 8x10 carport, I'll store the extra parts and lawnmower in there. I guess i have to build the shed before I can start on the car, I'm not going to leave the truck outside. A couple trucks in my area have "gone missing."

So I guess I'll finish up cleaning the garage, then back on the house for a while, the wife has been bugging me to finish the kitchen trim.

I made it to the next level on the other thing. I have to do a 2 hour physical next week. What a long freakin' process. It had better pay off.

Uh oh... didn't realize it had been so long

The "other thing" panned out and my time and physical abilities have been impaired

I promised the wife I would install outdoor ceiling fans on the porch. It was my fault, I opened my mouth one day saying how cool it would look... and crap, she agreed

So I bought the fans and finally got around to installing them when I noticed something wasn't quite right with the light I was taking down. This was a real metal and glass light, not the plastic and plastic glass they use now, and instead of hanging it from the box and using shims to account for the siding thickness... THEY MOUNTED THE LIGHT TO THE SIDING USING SCREWS. I was so pissed. Idiots. Thankfully, the second light was mounted properly to the box, why the 1st one wasn't, I haven't a clue. At first I thought the box wasn't even there, but was really happy to see that it was... I'm a little baffled by it. The light was heavy too! It was causing the siding to bow down some.

Anyway, the lights made a nasty rust stain on the ceiling and the fan thingy wasn't big enough to cover it, so it was back to Lowe's for some plastic ceiling medallions to cover the area. We used the same one that I used in the dining room. It actually looks pretty cool. So the fans are up and ready for next summer!

I've also been wanting to build a "real" closet for a long time. The house originally had the cheap wire ones. They were missing the plastic ends, some had a little rust, some were turning yellow... just not cool. So I got an idea, then modified it about 10 times in my head and below is what I came up with. It's REALLY STURDY too. I hung my full weight off of the top one and it held my 170 pounds without moving at all. I still have to caulk and paint it all... sarcastic yay... but I think it came out awesome. It's in the guest bedroom. So it will be for Christmas and various storage, maybe some coats, with some room for guests to hang clothes. It doesn't look it, but it's over 3 feet deep and the shelves are 23" wide, so there's also plenty of room for vacuum and rug shampooer storage. I have to build 3 more. One in the computer room, one in the other guest bedroom, and the last is the linen closet in the hallway. The master closet will actually be easier, but more expensive. I'm going to use a closet kit because it's so big.

1. Oh yes, I went there! When I said every room was getting crown and new trim, I meant it!

2. Basic set up. You've got the bottom and top shelf for storage, the small shelves in the middle is 18" (probably put my unbuilt model kit boxes in here) and there's about 2.5 feet of clothes hanging.

3. I still have to repair/repaint the door and jam, and fill in all the holes and paint it top to bottom, but overall, it's pretty much done

I also haven't been a total slacker either.

The living room finally got the base trim. It's more of a pain to do the carpeted rooms because I cut it, check the fit, paint it outside, then install it, caulk it, fill in the holes, then touch up the paint!

The guest room with the closet also has new crown and base trim, but I need to do all of the touch up work still.

The master bedroom also got the same treatment, but was more of a pain. The dimensions are like 15.5' by a hair under 16' so I had to buy 16 footers for the crown and base trims... NONE of which would fit up the stairs... so onto the porch roof and into the window they went Same deal as the other room, it's installed and caulked, but I have to do all the finish work.

I'll take pics of all that when it's totally done in about 6 months

Got the bottom half of the kitchen ALL DONE! Wohoo! Just have to paint the crown, but that's going to be a pain and a mess, so I'm going to wait for a holiday to do it.

I painted the backside/side of the "bar" area. I went for the brushed look with all vertical brush strokes. Looks kinda cool up close.

Also caulked and finished all of the lower trim under the cabinets. It was a pain, but it's all done and nice now

...and after much pleading, begging, and flat out annoying the crap out of me I built my wife her master closet.

It's basically a modified kit from lowes. I had to buy two of them to make it all work, but the end result was pretty sweet!

1. I wanted to do a double tier clothes hanging thing so the "stock height" just wouldn't do. It needed to be lifted and mounted to the wall!

2. I was pretty scared about cutting the feet off an expensive piece of furniture but did it anyway

3 & 4. I got creative with the corners and was able to wrap them around the walls. The right side has double hanging top to bottom but the left side top only has a top bar, that's for my wife's dresses and such. I also added additional supports to the wall for the shelves and the rods. It will get painted wall color so it will blend in.

5. I said we bought two of them... so I turned the second one into a dresser. Kinda cool, huh?

Before I started building this the room got new paint, crown molding, and base molding.

You can see how much better the supports blend in now that they're painted wall color. You won't even see them once clothes are hanging.

I managed to make a big mess today...

(some photos are cell pics so they suck...)

1. I tried to take it down properly... roof first... etc... then the son of a ***** started to collapse with me on the roof (I only weigh 165 and I figured it would do that anyway...) so out came the sledge...

2. One of the many reasons it was time to come down...

2. $400 in lumber. I loaded almost all of it, the Lowe's kid was so helpful... And yes, my yard is super krispy, we need rain bad.

And here's a pic of the little boogers that did over $12,000 in damage to my house last month. We're going to get a new roof, gutters, a few windows, shutters, and I even got $900 for the craptastic shed I just tore down My wife's 2011 Mustang was also damaged, I'm going to take that in this week to be repaired. Amazingly NO damage to my Z71 or S10 (everything else was in garage).

I'll set up some estimates for this week and probably have the roof done this fall when it's a little cooler, probably September.

Framing nailers rock! AND I only shot myself in the finger ONCE!!!

It still needs more bracing and the door opening/header but it's pretty much done with the pad part. I'll start the 10x10 "pole barn" part tomorrow.

I was only about an hour away from being completely done with my trusses today when a nasty storm blew through.

1. I built my first one and used it as a template for the rest of them. I went with 4.5' over 10'.

2 & 3. Both gable trusses are done and I'm almost half done with the last 4, I had everything cut and ready to go, but the storm got me.
