Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build
Thanks Curt!
I wanna see how yours is coming along! Ok so a little progress doing odds and end little things. Ordered a new thornbeck bros. tubular transmission crossmember Tore out the A/c unit because as much as I'd hate to spend the money, I think I'm gonna eventually get that vintage air under dash setup. Pulled out the old trans xmember. Installed some billet brake, accelerator, and e-brake pedals. Plus other random small things. I have a question, does anyone know how to shorten e brake cables? And also I've decided on the next big step of my project, I am going to section my crossmember 1.5". It's either this, or "Z"ing my fame probably 2inches. The reason I am thinking about the section, is because it is more self contained and I can remove it and transport it to a sandblaster or welder much easier than moving the whole truck. Plus I think it's less things I need to get like metal plates and such. But if someone can shed enough info to sway me, I'm all for it. Oh and does anyone know where to buy sandblasting material locally? I picked up a little sb gun for $12 bucks at attwoods so I thought if give it a try. Lol Posted via Mobile Device

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build
x2 on "z'ing" the frame....but I'd go 3" to make it worthwhile...in case you decide to get bigger wheels etc...

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build
Woah mineralgrey! They're like twins! Lol.
Well since I took out the a/c, I replaced the small front tires, now I'm running 235/70/15 all around. Today when I got home from school, I did a little work... The crossmember is out!!!! It's too late to turn back now! Haha. I figure as of right now I'm going to section the crossmember 1.5". I chose to do the x-member instead of the Z because I'm not wanting really an extreme drop, and this will keep my lca's from dragging off. And if I want to z it later, I can either just do a small Z or sell the crossmember. I like the peace of mind that this is a reversible option, even though I don't think this truck will ever see stock again.

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build
I took the crossmember to the car wash and removed about 5 lbs of grime! Lol Then I tried out my $12 sandblaster from Attwoods. It did pretty great for the price. It took the old paint right off. Though it had trouble getting the surface rust off, and couldn't remove dirt or grime at all. But overall it works. Then I drew on all my marks so it's ready to cut and weld! I'm gonna wait til early next week when this guy is gonna help me use his plasma cutter. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build
I don't know anything about this stuff so could you explain something to me? How is this going to allow you to get lower. Shouldn't the bottom of the crossmember have been brought up not the top brought down? I'm just not seeing it I guess...

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build
Bringing the top down brings the bottom up in relation to the frame
The piece cut down is where the frame sits on the crossmember so this brings all the suspension higher which lowers the truck... Posted via Mobile Device

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build
The three bolt holes on the outside on each side is the surface that bolts to the bottom of the frame. Moving that section down will allow you to slide the entire assembly up on the frame rails.

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build
Got my crossmember all welded up!! It's all welded then I ground down all the welds and it looks pretty good.*
The first picture is of some reinforcement I welded into the bottom to better support a jack.

Re: maxxy's 81 bagged c10 build
Thanks guys! I appreciate it. The crossmember took a lot of work but hopefully now I won't drag my lca's off! Lol
Now I've run into a different dilemma, my crossmember won't fit into my sandblasting cabinet!! Posted via Mobile Device
