"Tite-seal". I think they call it. Go online and see if your store has it . Mine does.

Re: 66 frame off resto-mod

Well, the engine harness and computer had to go back to Current Performance as it looks like something was missed when they did the harness and computer re-program. I hope things will go more smooth when it returns and the engine comes to life...

Re: 66 frame off resto-mod

Well I got my computer and harness back and the engine fired up for the first time (the computer was bad and I had to buy another)! I'm not out of the woods yet as the accelerator did not work at all. The throttle body moves when the system is turned on and it runs smooth from fast idle to normal, but pressing on the drive-by-wire pedal does nothing. Times like this I miss the old style linkage moving the butterfly!

Re: 66 frame off resto-mod

Great build, I have a 95 caprice that I bought for my project and it has an LT-1 and a 4L60E trans. I am watching your build and I'm wondering, if you had it to do over would you just buy a 5.3 ls motor instead? I have heard that the LT-1's are allot harder because of the complex wiring and the cost to have it modified. What is your opinion? Thanks
Scott

Tough to say... I wouldn't think they are much harder, I believe current performance does the wiring for the LT1 as well as the LS. I like the LS motors as the genIV 5.3 has 325HP stock and it is using the later technology to run on regular fuel. If I had to do it all over again, I would still do an LS motor and it would like be a 5.3l; but, I like the new G8 motors with the 6l80 trans a lot, I just can't bring myself to spend the extra money for it.

Re: 66 frame off resto-mod

I,for some reason, thought you had an LT-1. Well thanks anyways for the advise. Its what I got so I think I'm just going to use it and see how it goes.

Re: 66 frame off resto-mod

It has been a while since the last update, but progress has been slow... Got most of the front end assembled and also got the drive by wire working so the engine is running.

Working on the air intake plumbing and wiring cleanup. Still have to address the bed repair, but slowly making progress.

Re: 66 frame off resto-mod

here are some shots of what we are looking to do for the air intake. We are using the old heater box as an air cleaner box that draws fresh air from the cowl vents. RRC is still working on it, what do you guys think?

The ls1 f-bodys use a flat style filter that should be pretty easy to adapt within the box. I'll take some measurements if interested.

Re: 66 frame off resto-mod

I have a question and if I missed it in the thread I apologize.

So are you using a vintage air setup or the 08 truck heater/blower box? If you are using the vintage air setup, are you using the GM air conditioning compressor or the vintage air compressor?

If you are using the 08 truck blower box, I need a number to the shop building the truck

Re: 66 frame off resto-mod

seams to me its not a stock unit. it looks like a vintage unit. I am goin to try to use the stock 08 but I have to mesure it and Im not sure just yet how to deal with the panel. If I go with the stock truck panel then Ill try to hide it some where. If I get it to work Ill let you know cl08.

I am using a vintage air under dash unit with the stock 08 compressor and a generic condensor. The engine wiring harness has a line for compressor request so the engine ECM turns on the compressor (and deals with idle speed and electric fan turn on).

As far as I have read, the factory setup uses the BCM and controls the AC via the GM CAN bus. When I looked into using the factory 08 under dash unit it looked like I would have to use the BCM and control panel to engage the AC as the entire system in intergrated into the BCM and ECM computers. This was more than I was looking to tackle so we went to the Vintage Air system and asked Current Performance to provide an AC request line when he did the harness re-wire and ECM re-program.

Are you getting an entire 08 truck? FWIW, When I was planning my project, RRC recommended that if I wanted to use all the modern stuff that comes with a new truck it would be better to buy a good running truck so he could work on them side my side.

Re: 66 frame off resto-mod

Hey Tom,

I have been eagerly awaiting an update. Good progress.

I really like the air cleaner idea, wish I had thought of it. I built a plenum box and mounted a classic 14" air cleaner on top so it looks momentarily like it has a carb.

What did you find wrong with the drive by wire? I have my pedal mounted but I am not ready to start the engine yet. If you have any tips I would be glad to hear them.

Tom, I have a question for you. I noticed that your KBS treatment was painted over. Is this a suggested method for that application?
Thanks.

Thanks for the comment about the air intake, I can't take the credit for it as RRC thought of it (he was a race car builder a while back). The DBW system had an issue with the wiring. I had to reverse 2 of the leads to the accelerator. it pays to have All Data and a helpful vendor like Current Performance!

I will hopefully have more pics this weekend if possible...

It was, the KBS goes on the bare metal then primer, then paint. The KBS should help keep rust at bay for longer then just paint and primer. I don't want to have to deal with rust again, it's expensive!

Thank you Tom on the info. Reason I ask is I plan on building a buget/daily driver build for my wife. I can get alot of these parts/salavge truck next to nothing and mostly likely as you said from a running truck. AWESOME TRUCK TOO Tom!!!!

70 Suburban let me know when you start the 08 AC!!!!!!
