Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet
plugging away, stripped, honed, and painted the block, set the pistons in the wash tank over night and removed the rings No need to machine as I see it, compression was great pre dismantle, and I am planning on a 383 short block after I'm on the road and if all plays out as planned, possibly a twin turbo setup for fun bearings all looked decent, crank looks good, and all standard bore and bearings, I'm pleased to say the least too bad the block has been welded, not in a water jacket but I'm thinking someone forgot that one last bellhousing bolt, heard from a friend of course because I've never done it before myself Lots of pics, we all know I'm a total picture whore

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet
yeah it was surprising to find the bearing and everything actually half decent, replacing them anyway but the whole sitting in a field for 15 years in the harsh environment northern Canada gives, I half expected it

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet
axle, hood hinges, engine perches and latch back from blasters, prepped and painted, repaired axle seats with 1/4 inch steel machined u bolt holes to match, and painted with por 15, removed axle seals and bearings and discovered my supplier forgot my bearings so I may be somewhat on hold for the weekend, canada day everybody shuts down so it could be until tuesday until I'm rolling which really axes my big weekend plans as the forecast is no good for outdoor bodywork and my garage is slammed with parts and a non rolling frame, we'll see maybe the motor will be back on the list

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet
thanks, it's slow going, but it's going, lots of time off but always something to get in the way, was planning on having the cab fully repaired and in [rimer on the frame with the body mocked on it but that'll have to wait, need to be able to get everything in the garage to do bodywork, any luck the axle bearing will be in stock tomorrow

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet
the joys of old trucks I have to remind myself this is a hobby and a toy a lot of the time or my temper takes the fun out of it and it gets put in the penalty box as it did last spring haha

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet
pretty well sums it up, got it rolling, the bearing/seal combo is 1piece SKF from napa, this is as far as it sits in, checked it and the bearing is in square and sticking out consistent all the way and napa says this isn't uncommon and will not cause problems, we'll see one day Installed the new main bearings and crank and prepped everything for assembly should be done tomorrow and in the frame with the mock tranny, then onto bodywork

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet
thanks, dark side? looks pretty nice in your 67 small window fleet, damn I'm jealous! After this one is done I am finding one like yours, long way to go but will feel like I'm really getting somewhere once the motor is in

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet
Gotcha, I love that style now from this site, I always appreciated them, but had never really gotten into them until recently, I have a soft spot for the AD series 5 windows, one day hahaha I'm thinking hot rod flatz blue metallic still but the idea of a flat champagne metallic is on the backburner

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet
hahaha I'm too tall already, hit a snag today installed the pistons and now I can't turn it over to torque the rod caps, hoping it's something minor like the main caps are over torqued, went 80 and after checking my haynes it's 65, the rings are all in as outlined and slide in fairly easy, so this is all I can think, if not it'll get torn apart and re installed tomorrow, the cam is in, and cab got flipped onto its back to prep and por 15 the underside, we'll see tomorrow not getting too fired up about it, the 15lbs over torqued is most likely the issue, installed the perches and it's just aching for the motor and mock tranny

Re: Finally starting the 68swb fleet
well the engine gurus on the site helped me with the motor by the looks of it, will update tomorrow, but I have the whole even side of the motors pistons in backwards rookie move, gotta add red bull or monster to those late night tinkerings when I'm working, hopefully so updates tomorrow for you
