Re: Project OBS (Orange Blossom Special)

Anybody have a recommendation for headers that will fit in these Blazers without issue? Looking for nice looking headers that don't interfere with other components under the truck. Just bolt 'em up! Anybody?

I don't have them but have researched the same topic. I keep hearing about Doug Thorley's as being about the best. If the motor is basically a stock build the original ramhorn style manifolds might be the easiest.

Re: Project OBS (Orange Blossom Special)

I am restoring my 71 K5 as well, I have headers to install and test fit them before I took the engine out of the frame. These are Flowtech, fit nicely, but as you can see the oil filter is right next to them, so we ordered a remote oil filter kit through Summit Racing. I can get some more pics soon if you need them, frame is being painted now. Love your Blazer, I am going with Hugger Orange too, just looks great on these trucks

Re: Project OBS (Orange Blossom Special)

Well it's been a long time coming, but I finally have an update…

We've made a bunch of progress since my last post but it really has been slow going. We were moving along until we got to the engine and things came to a screeching halt because the 350 we have in there is not the original motor and we've run into a bunch of incompatibilities with components, etc. We bought a new starter that Rock Auto said would fit, but it didn't so we went to the local auto parts store today and got the correct one so that problem is resolved.

My dad (and electrical engineer) has come on board to help with the wiring. We got a new harness from Painless and have begun installing it. As 'painless' as it may be compared to other brands or other vehicles, it's still no joke. This is complicated stuff, at least for me.

Before we even got to that stuff we had to rebuild the steering column a few times because of different problems with it. But it's done and installed, and with a beautiful new wooden steering wheel. It looks nice, but man the installation/adapter kit took us half a day just to get it on there right. I think that wheel is the single modern update we have made to the truck. Everything else is original.

Here are some pics…

Re: Project OBS (Orange Blossom Special)

I got new rear inner bumper brackets and was able to reuse the original outer ones, but the inner ones don't stick out as far as the outer ones. And the new inners seems to be the same length as the outers. Anyone have any idea why they are different lengths?

See the pic…

Re: Project OBS (Orange Blossom Special)

Finally a update…

So one of the last snow storms, the one with heavy, wet snow and then rain on top of it, collapsed the temporary carport on top of the Blazer. Thankfully no damage was done ot the truck. So long story short we towed the truck to my folks' house and put it in their garage, where she will reside until she's finished. And we're getting close. Just a few more things to do. Wiring is almost done, and a few more things need to be buttoned up in the engine compartment, then we'll be ready to fire her up. Here are some pics from the move…

Glad to hear no damage was done. Looking real nice. You can see the finish line from here.

Re: Project OBS (Orange Blossom Special)

Looks like you can see the end of the tunnel on this. What size tires are those and is that factory height or a small lift?

33" tires with no lift. May lift it modestly later but wanted to see how she sits at factory height first.

Re: Project OBS (Orange Blossom Special)

So much progress since my last post. Sorry I haven't been updating my thread. Not sure where to begin, but for now… SHE'S ALIVE! Got her started up for the first time today. Tried to get her started up a couple weeks ago, and then again on Monday, and had a bunch of issues like needed to replace carb, needed a new radiator, needed to replace the oil pump shaft (cause the guys at the machine shop 'accidentally' installed one for a big block. So lots of bumps in the road, but we're almost done…

Cleaned, polished and re-painted the emblems. It's a bad photo, but they look pretty great in person.

Re: Project OBS (Orange Blossom Special)

Thanks Jim. No bugs yet. A bunch of hiccups, but no bugs. We've been working painfully slowly on it to say the least, so we've worked out kinks along the way.

It's a 70 amp Painless master fuse that is a safety precaution to protect against shorts.

Re: Project OBS (Orange Blossom Special)

So it's been a LONG while since I posted anything on here, but here are some pics of the truck from a while back. Since then we've painted the letters on the tailgate, patched and painted the top, and some other stuff. Still some work to do on the interior (reupholster seats, Line-x the tub, carpet up front, etc.). Will post some more pics soon.
