Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Nothing to update on!! LOL

My brother is being re-stationed to Hawaii, so we have been trying to hang out as much as possible lately, and been building some garden boxes (see below), so I can have some fresh veggies this year.

The poor beast is just sitting there patiently waiting for me.

I think I may have at least a partial solution to my brakes being soft. I haven't adjusted the shoes back out, after taking them apart to clean them out, so I am hoping that is the problem with them. Probably going to mess with that this weekend. Cross your fingers!

I have a friend who has access to all kinds of new, scrap, automotive wire, and is accumulating the colors and sizes I need to re-wire the truck, so hopefully will be getting on that in the near future too! As she sits right now, the only wiring in there is some under the dash, and the bare basics to start and run. No signals, or lights anywhere have any wire at this point.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Wife and I were posted to Hawaii for 3 years, we loved it; but man the time went soooooo fast!
We are accustomed to 4 seasons and in Hawaii they dont have that, to us it seemed like one super long summer, which is why when we were standing in the airport to leave we were like: What just happened???

Where at in Hawaii? If he's army or navy and needs anything give him my info. If he's a marine he's on the other side of the island and I wouldn't be much help....

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

He is excited to go, and pretty bummed at the same time. His 13yo. daughter has to stay here with her mom, but luckily he will be back on a pretty regular basis.

He sold his truck, and bought a motorcycle counting on the nice weather over there. LOL

He is in the Air Force, so will be at Hickam.

Cetacean6 thanks for the offer! Awesome CC you have! Nice score! When will you be back stateside?

I work at Schofield Barracks, and know the area well. I'm planning a trip back to Wa in late July so I can tear down and dip/blast my cc.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Trying to do some cheap upgrades at this point, and had a couple of questions.

First question is, does anyone know of a rattle can paint that matches the original silver interior paint? I got a new to me gas tank for in the cab, and am working on cleaning the yellow/orange paint off of it, so I can paint it the correct color. I wanted to paint behind it too, so that part is basically done for now, and I can pretty much just leave it be, as I work on other things.

Secondly, The gasket on my master cylinder is almost totally solid. When bleeding the brakes, fluid is leaking out even with the lid screwed down. I would like to find a new one, or make one if needed. What material should be used for the gasket? While talking about the master cylinder, the bolt head for the lid is almost totally stripped. Can I use a regular bolt, or will the brake fluid cause problems?

With my luck, I would get the wrong type of gasket material, and or the wrong type of bolt, and the brake fluid would break down that material of either... or both of them, and ruin the system. LOL

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

You'll be fine with standard cork gasket material and any bolt that is the proper length and diameter. I think that bolt is a 1/4-20. There should be a little o-ring that goes on the bolt after you slide it through the lid. That keeps the bolt and lid together and makes things nice.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Did you ever figure out how original your 4x4 is. Like you I have a converted 2x4 to a 4x4 and it has been a fun project for my son and I...My running gear is from a mid 70's chevy 4x4 short box but I have had some minor issues with engine parts which push it into the 80's for donor parts. Your last post was from 2010...any updated pics or progress? I don't see too many 4x4's on this site.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

ABX131, I posted a video of us taking it for a drive back on 4/29/12.

Mine is a factory 4x4. Although one of the PO's changed out the rear axle at some point.

You may have me confused with another thread.

I agree 4x4's are not too common on here, we need to band together! LOL

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

Here are some pics of the transfer case and linkages. The transfer case shifter is on the right of the transmission shifter, instead of on the left like all of the other ones I am seeing on here.

I know this was discussed on the site somewhere, I just cannot find it anywhere.

66Gilbert asked for some pictures to see if he could identify what was going on.

A few more.

I guess scraping some grease off would make it easier to see.

Definitely a Rockwell T221 transfer case and all factory shift linkage. This is the first I have seen of a transfer case shift lever on the right side of the transmission shift stick. Possibly a Canadian built truck? Maybe someone else will chime in on this.

According to the VIN, it was built in Pontiac, MI.

Kro, where was yours built?

When I took the trans hump off (page #4 post #98) it didn't appear to have ever been off, so who knows! LOL This truck is full of mysteries.

Re: '60 GMC 4x4 Long Fenderside

I"m pretty sure that all 60-61ish trucks had the transfer case shifter on the right, then after that they all went to the left. I thought I read this somewhere and it seems to be pretty consistent, although there is a lot of swapping in of later year parts, especially on these 4x4 work trucks.
