Re: How about some pics of 47-59

Here is one that is sitting up at my wifes family ranch. They call it the fencing pickup. It was used to haul fencing material, now it just holds it.
It has a 283 out of an Impala. The original 6 is laying on the ground about 5 feet away. My father inlaw and his brothers put the 283 in it when they were in high school. I told him I could give it a good home. Although I have alot of other projects. I still want it.

Although it has a 57 grill and hood, I think it is a 56. I say this because the vin goes something like this 3A560018051. Also the 3100 above the body line, and the steering wheel is the flatter version found in 55-56. I haven't found a good site to decode the vin yet.
I think it would be fun to just modernize the running gear and leave it alone.
The cab maybe to far gone to fix up. The rust in the usual places, but the top of the cab on the inside around the windshield is pretty bad.

The VIN says this:
1/2 ton 3100, 1956, Oakland assembly plant, production #18,051. At least that's what I get from the LMC catalog ID section.

I'd love to have that front bumper. That is cool!

Re: How about some pics of 47-59

Mr Pops, Nice Rendition. I think your proportions are right on. That long bed does go well with the stretch of the cab. Also that size lift with tire combo matches well. That thing would be a beast.

Terd, Thanks for checking that vin. All the times I entered it on different sites it wouldn't take it. I'll have to remember LMC next time.
And yes that front bumper is cool. I've never seen another one like it. I've seen the guards before but not the piece that ties them together. I told my wife I wanted to swap it out for mine. She thought it was a good idea. I really need to just go get that truck and get it out of the weather.

Re: How about some pics of 47-59

Hi from sunny old Blighty.....he's a few pics of my 54 that was imported into the UK last May.......apparently it had been sitting in a cow barn in North Dakota since 1970....its suffered from a bit of cow related damage, but that just adds to the look I think...

Its now equipped with a LHD Jag front clip, 10 bolt rear end with notched chassis, 350/330 bhp crate motor and 700r4 box. Needs a rewire, a set of steels and whitewalls and some fettling but should be up and running in the next few weeks

That is great! Have you any pictures of the grafting of the jag front clip? Any plans for the body or are you going to leave it with the "barn charm"? Gorgeous engine.

So that's a jaguar front clip? I didn't know that you could do that.

No way fleetsides are ugly. They just need the proper love and attention to look good.

Re: How about some pics of 47-59

I agree with Terd (does that just sound wrong to me?)

There is NO WAY the Fleetsides are ugly, they're awesome. In fact, to me the quad headlight years look kinda odd with stepsides. The time had passed for the step side to me. I see stepsides in later years that I like but not as much as the fleetsides.

Thanks! That is its current state it's pretty much ready for paint but, I can't decide on a color it was going to be silver when I started the build 3 1/2 years ago but to many of these trucks have been done in silver recently.

Tim,

Welcome to the A D section from dry heat So. Az.!
Very nice build you have, can you tell me more about the hood peak and a finished (to date) pic of the hood. It looks like you filled in the cowl vent right?
How did you keep from heat warping the hood panels?

Thanks

The last pic is of the finished to date hood. The cowl vent is filled I bought a fill panel from *****in products to do that, because it was cheap ($20 if I remeber correctly)and had bevel edges to make it easy to finish. I controlled the heat by tig welding it with wet towels next to the weld and only welding small areas at a time and moving around to not get heat concentrated in one area, I still had to do some hammer and dollying bit not much. Here's a couple more pics from different angles;

My 55' GMC I rescued after a 30 year nap under that pine tree! Haven't worked on it much lately but hope to get back on it soon! Plan is to go black and make it look somewhat stock but its still a hot rod, got a nice 283 under the hood that I'm putting 3 deuces on.
