Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"

Sorry T.J. Today's work got rid of all the shiny metal.

The inside of the cab is almost ready for paint. Just need to fix the radio hack in the dash and weld the gas tank brackets back in.

A shot of what my floor looked like after I cleaned the bed liner and fiberglass patches covering all the holes. If I remember correctly I welded up like 35+ holes.

Great work....man, you guys have so much more clearance than our knee-knocker cabs. Sure helps when laying down primer and paint.

Funny you should say that I had a hell of a time painting the roof. Its going to be a pain to get a smooth even color coat on it.

I didn't get as much done today as I wanted I ran out of welding wire and primer. Had already made one trip to the store and didn't want to go back. So I prepped the gas tank brackets and got them ready to weld back in and then did some more stripping on the back of the cab.

It was a nice breezy 85 today so we winterized the pool. Glad to have that out of the way.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"

Good thread. Its motivational for what I'm about to attempt. Neat garage too. Not sure what I'm going to do with all the parts once the trucks stripped, but I'm sure I'll think of something.

Like your wood working projects. Had a buddy whose gone now, use to do stuff like that. He made a WW1 German sub, with copper wire for the fencing around the deck, then various wood stains to replicate the rust down the sides. I wanted him to make me one, but he passed shortly afterwords.

Again, good job.

Thanks for looking in Cursed. Glad I could lend some motivation we all need it at certain times. Mine has been very high for almost the past year which is long time for me to stay on task. I have several different serious hobbies and I tend to burn myself out on one and then switch over and do another. But this year the woodworking has taken a backseat to the truck build. The poor woodshop is lonely for sure. Sorry to hear about your buddy woodworking is becoming a lost skill.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"

I had the same issue with painting the inner roof, just a pain of a spot. I used a gravity feed gun, kept the fluid level high and did the best I could. Came out pretty nice for my novice hands.

Your paint job looks spot on to me. I use an old school siphon gun for primer as it just works so much better for me than the gravity feed. For color I use gravity feed. I have a regular size one and then a small touch up gravity feed. My dad suggested using the small one to do the roof as it might be easier to maneuver so I am going to try that out. I will keep it full like you said and cover the air bleed hole with a rag so it won't spill out.

Nice work on your cab!! I also have a lot of bolt holes to weld up in my floor but I'm going to wait until I remove the bracing I welded in to support the cab. It's a real pain to work around.

Thanks Mike.

Here is today's work. Fixed the rust in the cab corners. Pulled a bunch of dents on the back of the cab and 2 more on the roof. Finished stripping the back of the cab and then laid down some primer.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"

Thanks guys. Thought I would throw this pic up of where it sat for 10 years. I just passed the 2 year mark with this project. Although I didn't really get serious with it until mid 2013. Still have a long ways to go.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"

Truck is coming along nice. The primer looks good and from the pics the cab looks straight. The hot rod flatz will cover up some of the minor imperfections. But from what I see it looks good and the pant will look awesome! God job! Also pm me your phone number again. I switched phones.

I'm getting excited about that.

Here is what I got done today.

Sprayed the rust areas on the roof I couldn't get off with rust neutralizer

Started the bodywork

Also replaced the rear axle bump stops on my Camaro the factory ones where shot.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"

Today I worked on finishing up everything in the interior that needed to be completed so I can paint it. I finished welding up all the holes in the high hump and the doing some bodywork on it. Its ready to be bolted in and painted.

Made a patch panel for the radio hack job and got that welded in. It still need some bodywork and then I am going to make a template for the holes. I wish I had an original radio to make sure I am making the holes right.

Also did some bodywork on the gas tank brackets to cover up the plug welds. They are ready for some paint.

I am officially on vacation today and all thru next week. My goal is to get some color on the cab. I plan to shoot the interior first and then the white part of the cab. Don't know if I will get to the blue.

Great progress buddy.

Looking forward to eventually getting to my truck as well.

Martin got lucky and found me a radio blanking plate and a new to me heater control panel to fix the holes previous owners hacked into the dash.

Hope you find time to get to the blue as well, that would be a real milestone.

Thank You Rian. So far everything is going on schedule for some color probably late next week. I can't wait to watch when you start on your truck. Are you still going to just do rust repair or you planning other things? Great score on the bits Martin got you.

Thank You. I love the garage though it wasn't meant for me. Fate put it in my hands.
