Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

While working on the engine and transmission, we are also working on the seat frames. Took them down to metal and primed them. Ready for paint..

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

So ... things are moving along. Freshened up the motor a little. Cleaned out all water jackets and replaced all freeze plugs. Followed the "while you are there" philosophy .. and while it was out, cleaned all the sludge from the valves, cleaned the oil ports and new gaskets etc. New oil pump, new plugs, new clutch etc.able to clean and paint the engine compartment paint the engine and tranny.

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

So I am going to post this issue here too since I have not had a lot of response from my other thread. I am taking my Burb back to the original style 3-speed on the tree.

I obtained a 3-speed from a burb years ago and have held onto it waiting for the time I could install it. Now that I have, the original linkage does not line up to the tranny levers.

I am trying to figure out why. Any ideas ? Anybody else had/solved this issue ?

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

Okay..I have a BIG favor to ask...ANYBODY who has a 60-62 ( maybe later not sure) 3 on the tree.. can you look and see if the shift levers on the tranny are both down ? The original shop manual show three different views, with two showing the forward shift lever as "up" and the rear shift lever as "down". What do you guys show as yours being ?

It looks like my linkage might work if it is up, but the lever doesn't look like it has been changed.

Can any post pictures of what their lever positions are in neutral ??

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

I still could use a picture off anybody's truck/Burb with a 305 V-6 and 3-on-a-tree shift linkage. I would like a picture of the linkage/levers in neutral and how the linkage misses the bell housing and yet hooks to the levers.

Found some old family pictures showing my Burb. The first two are mid 1960 and the last one is approximately early 1970ish

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

Finally back to work on the Burb. Finalizing the inside paint. The back has already been done. Now the floor and the rest of the dash. Also got a new wiring harness that will be put in. Hope that goes well ….

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

Well the work on the Burb is back in motion. Concentrating on the interior. Going to order the new firewall insulation pad, looking at what is available for the original style rubber front floor padding and now the ceiling.

I am trying to keep this as close to original as possible. I have not seen or heard of anybody being successful on finding the similar silverish roofing that came with it.

With trying to stay somewhat original looking, what has anybody come up with to install between the ribs ?

2023 - starting again... the never ending saga of trying to paint the beast..

Got the last attempt to paint, the clear coat and paint sanded and re-primed.

That roof is so freakin' big, and tall...

GAS TANK : I had my original gas tank cleaned and "tanked" at a local radiator shop. Looks nice. just wondering about the inside.. I have heard pros and cons on using a tank sealer. What are your experience and knowledge on using a tank sealer or just don't use anything ?

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

On second thought, can you see inside the tank and see if it really is varnished up? if not, clean it out with the old diesel and chain link method and then just run it. If it is super varnished though, be wary that this varnish will continue to break down with all new fuel added and could possibly lead to valves sticking in the guides....

My 66 panel tank had a small quantity of pinholes from rust (truck sat for 40 years). After tanking, the radiator shop guy was able to solder the bad spots, then coated both the inside AND outside of the tank. I'm pretty sure that he used different products (inside vs. outside) during the process. That was 2 years ago and the tank continues on down the road.

I did install an inline fuel filter which I ran for first 100 miles after the restoration then changed out.

I would recommend coating the inside with the appropriate product applied by an experienced pro.

Hey Cort,

Yea.. it has been a (it seems) a life long adventure... Since I started this I have had two marriages of my kids, 4 grand Princess born, buried several family members, had a massive heart attack (Widow Makers suck). and life just continues... I know my 60 Jimmy misses yours, (a brother Jimmy from another mother). I'm going to post some latest pictures of the "redo" from all the work that has been lost from time and weather.

Bill
