thanks! has your IFS shown up yet? do you have a build thread for that sub?
thanks, and my offer still stands if i get it done early. let's just hope it doesn't take nine months!! Now that i think about it, I've had it for 6 weeks and only have 4 left to make my deadline. this weekend should see a crap load of items marked off the list. :crosses fingers: |

QUOTE] It showed up, but waiting on the rear. I'm planning on starting a build thread over on the 47-59 side when I get started on it. Working on my truck that's about 25 miles away during the week sucks, so mainly on weekends. What paint did you use?

POR15. I had a quart left from when i did the '69, and liked how it turned out on that truck.
I just brush it on. At first it looks streaky, but as it dries, it levels out. |

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'
man, what a weekend. I'm just going to post a couple pics for now, but will post more with a write up tonight since we can't edit posts anymore.
I also apparently need to take more pics when it's all back together as i just realized i don't have any good shots showing the whole rear setup.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'
no pics to show right now cause i need to get some sleep, but the engine is in between the framerails with no cherry picker holding it in.
tomorrow night the plan is to get the trans mount buttoned up and the rear brakes done. We might see the axle get put back in place too. |

absolutely. I plan to bring both the '69 and the '50 to the Nats.

The work bob has helped with is super important too, and of great quality. I'd be really worried about safety if he wasn't helping out with the welding. I can weld, but he's 100 times better than I. I've learned a lot from him too. Quote:
Unfortunately my camera has grown legs tonight, but i'll see if i can find it and post the pics. The long and skinny of it is, there's a lot of things that are now off the list, and even more things that are now "doable" (blue dots can be done now). The engine is in, trans mount done. Rear end is back together and just needs to be plated and cleaned up. I do have to move one of the remaining cross members, but that should be pretty easy. I called about a driveshaft today and found it to be half the cost i thought it was going to be, so that was some good news. Also found that Fastenal carries the air line fittings I will need. That's good news since they are like 5 min from my house compared to the Frieghtliner shop 30 min away... So yeah, now's when we get to the last 20% of the project that takes 80% of the time. Wiring, brake lines, fuel lines, batteries, air lines, glass, lights, etc... I'm not sure yet, but I may be starting the truck for the first time this weekend. Might... just might... have it on the ground too. Oh, and tonight was my first night of not working on it in quite some time. I came home, made and ate a pizza, and passed out on the couch by 6:30. woke up @ 11pm to take out the trash. Posted this, and now off to bed (after looking for the camera) thanks for all the feedback guys. pics to come! |

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'
mmmm pictures... they taste so good...
So to start with (btw, these seem so old. This is how things looked last friday up to today), I made room in the frame for the step notches. I spent a lot of time thinking about where i wanted the axle to land, and in the end, i'm happy with where it ended up. Should look pretty centered in the wheel well when aired out. Oh, and yeah, I welded in about 30" of plate only to cut out about 24" of it.... such a newb. lesson learned. Then in an effort to get things solid before removing the cross member in front of the rear end, i made what i had hoped to be the bridge. Unfortunately i did not take into account the fact that to get the axle to the top of the step notch, the pumpkin will need to come up higher. you'll see what i mean later... The next day bob showed up and we got to work mocking up the 4-link. here's another action shot of bob getting his weld on and the bag mounts... This shot shows how high the rear would come up in the first attempt. And that put the wheel here. These aren't the wheels i'll be running (although i'm still thinking about it) but they are only and inch shorter than the 295/50's i'll be running.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'
That same weekend my brother came down to help get the motor taken care of. he did the hard part of getting the timing chain right (it was a pita to get the new crank gear on even with the installer) and matt and I finished it up this week. Now it sits in it's final resting place between the frame rails. The trans mount is also done and bolted in. just not pictured.
So after breaking down the rear, bob did the final welds on the rear end and i took the cross member to a friends and stick welded it together. Once the truck is a roller, I plan to trailer it out there and do some more stick welding on some of the more important welds. anyways, here's where we ended up after putting things back together... for the first time... I'm not sure if you can see in that shot, but the front bridge X member would hit the upper bars, so it had to go. The rear member also hits, but i have not replace it yet. We also came up with a pretty good plan for supporting the 4-link cross member. I'm happy with it and will be happier once it's finish welded and cleaned up. So that's it for this week. This weekend is going to start out with a swap meet on friday to see if i can find my remaining parts, and should see the rear end all buttoned up, and the start of the air lines and wiring harness install. Depending on how it goes, I may drag the clip in and get it bolted on. Maybe even the bed. Need to get the shock towers done first though.

Re: 1950 Chevy 3600 - Bumper Punchin'
Well for this chapter you have a nice looking triangulated four link and some shiny in the front, i did have to chuckle a little when i first saw your notches with the bridge gion across, knew what was coming, later.

i forgot to mention that bob introduced me to the wonders of a flap disk. I can now see myself spending a lot of time cleaning up the frame and the welds i've been laying.
