Re: Jojo's '70 Stepper
Hey jojo, I'm new to the forum but instantly started following your build. Keep the updates flowing!!! Quick question, What size is that tank and how far does it hang down below the rear bumper?

Re: Jojo's '70 Stepper
Moe, thanks for following. The tank is 21 gallon from LMC.The kit they sell has everything needed to install the tank, but to my knowledge there is no pre-made solution for a filler neck. So that all has to be custom made. I'm sure a bunch of us has reinvented the wheel in that regard.
I still don't have a bumper back there but I can say the tank sits a 3 inches or so below the exhaust pipes which should leave plenty of room for a 3",4" or 5" drop if I ever get around to doing that.

Re: Jojo's '70 Stepper
Thanks for checking in Mike. "Shop time" is at a premium these days unless we are talking about my print shop which is where I spend all my time if I'm not with the wife and kiddo or sleeping. Lol
Every time I step in to the garage, I see my truck waiting for some attention… But I'm hoping santa will bring some gifts so I can get back on it after december. (we shall see) Any ways, I've decided the deadline for completion of the build will be my boy's 16th birthday, so we have a little more time to finish it (15 more years) haha! Did I mention its gonna be his truck now? That will give me an excuse to buy my own truck one of these days!

Re: Jojo's '70 Stepper
I just looked at your entire thread good job so far. LMC sells a gas tank that has the filler on top, so it can be ran in the floor. Keep up the good work and keep the pictures coming.

Re: Jojo's '70 Stepper
Hi Mike,
Nothing but crickets chirping in the garage… But I have finally finished building our pergola in the back yard as well as toddler proofing our deck. It seems that lately family projects leave me with very little time for Jojo projects. But that doesn't mean that I haven't been occasionally checking your 69 Short Wide build. Thats some good work!

Re: Jojo's '70 Pickup
It's been a long time since my last update. I have done some things though
1. I installed the american outwore classic update. 2. Cut all the old metal out of the bed and laid on some plywood so I could haul some things. 3. Paid my registration and got it inspected so I can legally drive it. 4. Broke down and had to have it towed. The plugs were all fouled. So I re-tuned the carb and changed the plugs. 5. Had the starter fall off and had to re-tap the mounting holes. (I'll purchase a new one at a later time). More updates to follow....

Re: Jojo's '70 Stepper
You didn't break down on 281 north, did you? I saw a truck a while back that looked similar to yours.

Re: Jojo's '70 Stepper
Here's some more things that will be going in the truck soon.
Trying to redo the steering column. The old cpp column has no neutral safety switch and no back up light switch to go with my brand new wiring kit. So I am replacing it. Also a new rag to hopefully tighten up the steering. Although I bet the only way to improve it is to get a new steering gear box. I should add that a disc brake kit is in route from Performance Online. Should be here Monday

Re: Jojo's '70 Stepper
Pictures of the installed american auto wire stuff. All new wiring was installed in the truck. There is not a single old wire remaining.
I will post a picture of the installed steering column when I have time. It functions way better than the old column. Steering has no play in it now. It looks like I can skip the steering gear box (all the play was in the "old" Cpp column) I would recommend the new one I got versus the cheaper option from CPP that I originally had installed .

Re: Jojo's '70 Stepper
Installed column pictures. I added a steering wheel from advanced auto parts to finish out the project. Test drove and the steering wheel is mounted just past 12'clock. I will remove and adjust another time as it doesn't affect the functionality.

Re: Jojo's '70 Stepper
So the brake kit came in from Performance Online and it's missing parts. I'm waiting on the tie rod ends and ball joints (only half of them came in). I called and they said they'd send them out and it be about a week.

Re: Jojo's '70 Stepper
My truck broke down again today. I was two blocks away from my house. I had a few nice people offer to help me push it. I ended up starting it again and drove home.
I can't seem to figure out why it breaks down. I'm betting the plugs are fouled again. It won't idle below 1000 rmp just like last time. It diesels every once in a while (like every couple days or so) when I shut it off. Perhaps the timing? Could that be related to it having broke down on me twice.

Re: Jojo's '70 Stepper
My guess is timing , vacuum leak, or carb.

![]() Just kidding..... As Bill said, check for the easy stuff. Vacuum leaks, and timing. You should have hard start problems if the timing is out. When the plugs fouled, was it oil fouled or gas? If it's gas your carb may be dumping too much gas in there. If it's oil, well you know that's not good. Seriously, the LS style engine I put in my truck was the best investment I made. I did mine on the super cheap using craigslist for the motor and trans. there's a wealth of knowledge on this site to answer any question you may have. |
