Re: '72 chevrolet c20 custom camper build "Craig"

also hung my door and tacked up the rocker. after hours of wrestling the door i got it to shut like new and the gaps are great, they couldent be better . so i put some spot welds in the rocker and now i have to order the cab corner. in the mean time i will clean up the engine and get it ready for paint and do more sandblasting, and also patch some more rust holes. i got a halfway decent paint gun so i can get painting soon! just need to put the filter on my air hose!

Re: '72 chevrolet c20 custom camper build "Craig"

Nice progress! I somehow missed the posts on the 19th.. Per the engine i'd probably consider just pulling it at that point and do all the cleaning and painting while hanging from a cherry picker if you have one as its gonna be way to hard to get everything painted while sitting in the cradle.

Wish i could say i am making similar progress but i gave myself a case of food poisoning last Wednesday... Just starting to get over it.

I was going to mention something similar about pulling it, but my experience is that once you pull it, you start taking parts of to change gaskets, etc. Then you find a few things wrong here and there, and all of the sudden you have it being rebuilt when it was a good running engine the last time you drove it.

In my case, I did have an exhaust valve about to go south that I didn't know about prior to tearing the engine down, and many of the bearings were pretty worn, even though it ran well, made good oil pressure, etc. Stuff you might want to consider.

Then again, maybe you want to take care of that stuff now while you've got it apart.

Then again, maybe you want to get it back on the road and take some more time later on to go through the engine.

Wishy washy I am....

youve got that right nick, this started as a "replace the driver side rocker panel, and back on the road she goes" but as you know the rust you see is just the beggining lol and now im this far and i dont plan to go further. i really want to get this thing back on the road asap , the odometer says 63,200 and i really dont think its 163,200. the thing runs great. if it gives me troubles down the road ill just pull it and rebuild it. not a big deal. thanks for following along. ive read thrue your entire build and ive noticed that yours started out as a little rust repair to a whole frame off too..lol

Nice paint booth! long as it works that's all that matters, i have strung sheet plastic up on more than one occasion myself. You can always hand sand the runs a little before ya hit it with the orange.

Re: '72 chevrolet c20 custom camper build "Craig"

It'll be a lot nicer to work on in the future now that it's cleaned an painted. A few months of road dust is a lot nicer than 42 years of grime and grease.

I don't think I'd have bothered to mask off the oil filter though

We painted a VW Rabbit when I was in high school in the garage with no "booth" set up. We had metallic navy blue paint overspray everywhere. My dad still have stuff in his shop with blue overspray on it, and they've moved 4 times since then.
