Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Took my instrument cluster apart, cleaned thoroughly, painted the needles, cleaned the lens with Mequiar's headlight kit, and painted the silver on the bezel. Not a perfect job as I'll more than likely get new gauges when the 6.0 goes in, but looks much better IMHO.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

Started with this at 10:00 this morning.

It's a 3970010 block that was handed off to me by a great friend and Forum Member.

On my first unpracticed eye inspection, the block looks great. I'll get it hot tanked, measured
up, and m-fluxed as the first steps. Thanks again, Tom.

She's down to a bare block now. Yup, 4.0 bore.

The crank rod journals are almost funny. About four of the bearings looked like they have been
spun like race horses.

But, what the heck? The crank was probably going bye-bye, anyway. NBow, it's surely, "383 here I come".
It's just all so damned much money.....

I'll post the cleaned up pics and maybe a couple of rod journal pics as
soon as I can get *myself* cleaned up.

Checked on the cutout fender....it should be on its way this week to a garage in town. I called the garage too to give them a heads up.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

I finished my interior upgrade this last weekend.. all new interior hardware, seat belts, door panels re-done, bench seat redone (bought a donor seat), new carpet, dash pad, etc. It was gratifying doing all the work myself.

Here it is finished:

And before I started:

Here's a pic of the rod journals on the crank AFTER the rod big-end bearings were removed.

I think I need to do something to the crank. Like take it to the junk man.
The block looks really good, though. We'll see after a mag-flux.

This is the kind of stuff you can buy on E-Slay ...Usually says something like, "...10,000 miles since it was machined".

In this case, it was a wonderful gift. Looks like I have a nice block to work with.

Re: What did you do to your truck today? Chapter II

I worked on a right chevy fender for one of my 70's on putting a lower cup portion on[in]. Also did some checking on the core support that I had cut for a patch, making plans to get it on the table after the cup is welded in. I don't get to work on that stuff much the body shop is normally busy with other stuff. Jim

C-Notched the rear, cut out 3" holes in the center cross-member for future dual exhaust and installed cupped LCA's...

She is laying as low as possible, without doing drop spindles and disc conversion

She goes in this week for body work and paint...

Thumbs up Re : I See Good Things !

THANK YOU for the engine and crankshaft photos ! .

Engine works are my favorite because it's always so easy .

You might want to show better pix of the ' wiped ' bearing shells clearly showing the bare copper underlay ~ .

I see this all the time and occasionally the crankshaft is O.K. and can be carefully polished with crocus cloth and re used , not this one I don't think .

Never forget that ALL self service Junkyards are chock full of standard 350 cranks , cheaply .

I may soon have an extra good used 292 crankshaft , I now have two 292's and will cherry pick parts to build up one nice one for my '69 C/10 , then I'll be clearing out lots of spare 292 stuff, a bare block that needs sleeves , a spare cylinder head , connecting rods and so on .

I'm GREEN with envy looking at the cab repairs here ! I went and visited my truck again , still no work done .

I know , I know , patience is a virtue but dammit , I DRIVE my truck daily so three weeks + is too long for no worky .

.

Here you go Nate. I shot another close up of one of the crank's rod journals, and the bearings all lined up with nowhere to go. That one bearing is my favorite.

I'm gonna clean 'em up and run 'em.

Still messing around in the garage today.

Got the new (working) fuel pressure gauge in, finished up the fuel pressure regulator.

And made a sticker for the fire wall cover using a pic from the web along with a pic of
my wife in 1947. Figured she should have her pic on RAT somewhere.

Maybe you can post some close ups of the cam lobes and followers so the others will know what's good Vs. bad ? .

It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Installed new "true-double roller" timing set. Had pix of old set but got a new phone and haven't downloaded them yet. It was bad...almost full inch of chain travel between sprockets! Removed intake because i had the gaskets, and it needed a thorough cleaning.removed thermostat to check condition.Add thermostat and housing to the list of "things that cost money and need to be replaced."water pump is also on that list... Everything is prepped for paint,I.e.:block,oil pan, timing chain cover, balancer, intake. paint tomorrow. Also, new H.E.i. dizzy,Taylor wires, plugs, and one wire alternator came in today! Far more work (money) than I had planned.but glad I did it.

Well first we did our version of the Old Magician's Trick; we sawed the lady in half (my old survivor GMC that is)

And Today we install the Vortec V8 and trans. I'm shakin' like a kid on Christmas morning!

Thanks to Great Friends, REAL Hot Rod Pros I drove my 68 in this last Monday afternoon with the old 350 V8 & Turbo 400 and Here We Are TODAY!
