Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

Saturday, the three of us spent about 9 hours body working the bed. Was a long but productive day.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

At the end of the day, the bed went into its 6th coat of epoxy. Hopefully, it will only need blocked once more and it should be ready for paint.

Yes sir, you got the sequence of events down for sure. I probably should have bought new bed sides.

New bedsides require work too. They can have fitment issues and/or shipping damage like mine. You know the factory sheetmetal fits!

Oh for sure, bought a new bed for the last one of these we did. It's all work. I'm pretty sure I would have been money ahead on this one though.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

We got the truck out of the shop on Saturday and I let my son drive it around a nearby neighborhood. Pretty exciting to me. The truck sounds really good and drives nice. Be forewarned, there's a lot of my face in the video - sorry about that.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

We went ahead and sanded the bed again in 220 dry. Came out MUCH better this go around. We also added the 7th and 8th coat of epoxy. Should block one more time in 320 wet and be ready for paint.

Ha - that sounds like the last thing I need. Trying to balance building a pretty nice truck, on a budget, for a 16 year old kid......

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

Have you set the wheel tubs in the bed and checked the fit? I did my bed similar to yours with the two sections but wasn't paying close enough attention and had to rework the area where the flanges bolt. Lots of work going on for sure. My dad and I built a 64 swb for my first truck in 89', awesome memories for sure!

Yes sir, they were a little bit of a tight fit but we got them on. I learned the aftermarket tubs are actually 1/2 inch wider than factory.

I see you're from Bartlesville. I grew up visiting my grandmother who lived there and still have some family in those parts. Fond memories.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

I figured you had checked it all out, being that you have built many of these trucks. I had never done a floor in a truck before so I made all the mistakes possible. Tons of clean up and welding the braces in. it is a long to short conversion so I used one of the smaller braces to cover the seam on the underside. After all that work I bedlined the bottom of the bed and cab. My family has been in Bartlesville since 1873, the Buford building downtown was built by my great great grandfather.

That’s cool. My grandmother and one of my cousins worked at a lotaburger downtown. Used to love the food there. I have an uncle in the area still who has a silver 46 Ford Sedan with red ghost flames and red leather. Pretty nice car built in my dad’s hot rod shop many years ago. Maybe you’ll cross paths with him at a car show or something. Nice guy, name is Charley.

Love to check out your build, do you have thread on here?

Just got off the phone with Hotwire Auto and we went over his schematic and he confirmed the B = black wire and C = red wire are flipped.

Interestingly, we are currently doing the same motor in another truck for my nephew and his was wired incorrectly as well.
I ran into a similar issue while doing an LS swap. I was using a factory truck harness but used the newer “card style” MAF instead of the truck one. Thought I had a bad MAF but it turns out that GM uses a different pin out (same plug shape) for the two styles of MAF. Once I looked at and compared the wiring schematics, I swapped the two wires and bingo.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

We finally got some color on the inside of the bed this weekend. Sprayed the bed sides with some tintable bedliner. I also did the underside of the tubs just because. I wanted to do the bedliner on the inside of the bed sides like this so there would be a little contrast in finishes. Hopefully next weekend we’re able to paint the rest of the inside of the bed. The rest of it will be in base/clear like the the truck.
