Your father knows what he is talking about. He has some great advice.

As far as changing your mind, don't sweat it. I KNEW I wanted red and white at one point in my build. Turns out I really just thought I wanted two tone. I wouldn't change anything about my final choice.

I only wish you were closer so I could help you hammer that bodywork out.....mine only took like a year or two.

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB

Your father is a wise man. He's given you some very valid and important information to think about. I immediately thought about the "no buffing" limitation of a satin (really, anything that isn't gloss) when you said you were going black. I didn't want to deter you from your goals, so I kept my mouth (keyboard) shut. I'm glad he talked to you about all of that. I'm sure you'll be happy with it either way, but ultimately I think your father is right. You've always come back to red, you'll probably want it red at some point if you don't do it now.

One other thing to consider when choosing a color, if you haven't heard it already... The darker the color, the more flaws it will show (and harder to keep looking clean). White will hide a lot, and black hides nothing. Red is somewhere in the middle, but torch red in the sun is closer to white than black.

Keep at it. You'll get there. Your father is right, you've done a great job so far, especially for a first timer.

Thanks Mike, I wouldn't change anything about your final choice either. Your truck looks amazing. I wish you lived closer too but I wouldn't want to put that burden of helping with bodywork on you I'm not worried about changing my mind back and forth. It's a hard decision to make and I have a tendency to second guess myself a lot because I stress out over things. My wife always tells me, you know what you want so just do it. I know she and everybody else is right but somehow I get stressed over things and change up what I'm doing instead of staying the course.

Thanks Duane l definitely appreciate your insight. I thought about the no buffing as well when it came to the Satin Black but I was in the depressed, I don't care attitude then I was basically overwhelmed with the bodywork on the cab. Nothing else needs a lot of work but the cab. I kept telling myself I couldn't do it or it would never be good enough for shiney paint. So I said screw it, I'll just paint it satin black and move on.

Sometimes you have to hear it from somebody else before you realize what your doing. All my father had to say to me the other day is what are you going to do if you get a run, or a bug or dirt in the paint. How are you going to fix it. It's stuff I thought about before but I kept saying who cares. The problem is I do care and like you said at some point I would have the itch to paint it Red, so why not just get it right the first time.

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB

Keith, we all have faith in you, as I can tell your dad and wife do. We know you'll get it done. Now you just need to convince yourself that you can do it. You've done a good job so far, so I don't see any reason you wouldn't be able to complete the job, except your own negativity. Just keep going. Try not to get discouraged and keep your goal in mind.

I'll suggest one more thing. Get close to where you think you need to be, then assemble the truck and go over it one last time to make sure your body lines line up and your panels fit well. I've seen a few projects where the doors were finished off the body of a car, and one of them didn't line up. The gaps looked great but the lines were off at the front of the door. The earlier you're able to catch this, the less work you'll have to fix it. Thankfully I learned from someone else's mistake, and you can too.

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB

Well there's another setback on the cab after sanding down some of the paint on the rear cab wall, some rust holes magically appeared. I just can't believe it, every time I think I have the rust licked a new spot pops up 6 months or so later. This is the reason why I didn't want to get to involved in a perfect shiney paint job, It would be a waste as something else is sure to show up. At this point I'm so disgusted, not that it's a hard repair but over the fact it keeps happening. I'm about to just walk away from it for a while!

At least that's a cake walk to fix, it's a blip, in a month you won't even remember you had to fix it, don't sweat the small stuff, it's old it's going to have issues

Take a break to clear your head, but come back to it. Think about the end result and how proud you will be to have done it yourself. Just remember, these trucks are rust prone, and it doesn't look like yours is that bad. I know it's frustrating, but you know it could be a whole lot worse. Keep pushing and you'll get it done. Don't give up.

Keith, you have done ALOT of really nice work so far on this.Dont let rust beat you.Its what we have to deal with up here in the northeast.
You are so close now.

And i know all about it stressing you out.I have 2 trucks that drive me nuts.
But i know, one day it will all be worth it.

As said, just step back for a little bit.

Know the feeling of disgust. But hey it's a marathon and your well past halfway. Come look at the rust on my truck and you'll instantly feel better.

Keep at it Keith, I know the feeling. It took me a month just to figure out my fuel problem, plus the money I through away at parts I didn't need. Hang in there buddy.

Hey Keith do you have a stud welder gun or know anyone with one, because you can fix 99% of those holes with it.

I do have a stud welder but we decided to just cut the old rusty thin metal out and weld new metal in. My father got to work on making some patch pieces, now I just need to get my brother to come over with and weld them up for me and I'll be back in business.

Bummer about the new found rust. I found rust on my cab after being in primer for 2 years. It will find it's way out, even when you think you have it all whipped.
Sounds like have a plan. Hang in there it's frustrating I know but I bet you will get past all that eventually. Just takes a little time. It will be worth it in the end.

Keith-

Just keep pushing forward! The pay-off WILL come and it will be worth it!!!

I think you should be extremely proud of how far you've come and the work you have done.

These kind of things happen. Be grateful you caught it now. One small step back. No big deal!!!

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB

Thanks guys, I'm still working on the old girl, I guess I just can't stay away. I had no intentions on working on it this weekend but then I found myself in the garage on Saturday sanding away at the back of the cab. I worked on it for 2 days filling and sanding and now it's really close to primer except for those two obvious areas that need to be fixed. My father came over today and when I showed him the newest rust spot he shook his head and was like "you've got to be kidding me".

It's just frustrating cause after all these years of working on the cab and thinking you have everything fixed something like this pops up and slaps you in the face. But we will move forward, my father already started making some patch pieces, we figured the best thing to do is cut the rot out and weld new metal in. I promise you guys I'm not going to give up on her, I have way to much time and money invested to do that. Plus my wife told me she will divorce me if I sell the truck, so it's not going anywhere

Thanks Mike, your right about it finding it's way out. My biggest fear is that something will pop up after it has been painted. I really wish I blasted the cab from the start.

Thanks Nate, your right I'm glad I found it now and not 6 months from now after the cab was painted. Just sucks when you think you had it all.

Thanks Eric, it wasn't something I was expecting to find. It definitely surprised me but we'll get it fixed.

Re: Project "What was I Thinking" 68 SWB

Got some epoxy on the back of the cab. Didn't want any of the exposed metal to rust around the bodywork and create even more issues. I'm pretty happy with how the back of the cab turned out, a couple rounds of slicksand and I should be good. The areas I left unpainted I still have to cut out and fix.

Finally had time to catch up the other day. Don't let the minor things bother you. Just keep plugging away and if you get burnt out just take a break or work on something else. Can't wait to see this thing in red

Thanks I was getting some flash rust in areas so I knew I needed to get some epoxy on it.

Thanks Kyle, major respect to you for doing this paint and bodywork everyday for a living. This has definitely been the hardest part of my build for me. It I had the cash I would have sent this truck to you a long time ago

Thanks, I can't wait to see some paint on it either cause that means I'm done with the bodywork. I'm just hoping no more rust creeps out on me but I know with my luck as soon as I paint it something will show up.
