Wish it was a Conventional and wish it was closer.

I'm on the lookout for one.

Single Axle, Tandem Axle wouldn't matter. As long as it is Detroit powered with a Road Ranger.

Wow, you need an old Ryder car hauler! 3 different kinds of Detroits! Most with Road Rangers.

Re: GM Semis

Same seller has two other GMC cabovers, these have Cummins power.
https://www.bigiron.com/Lots/1984GMC...TruckTractor-2

I would guess these will bring a little more, farmers like old tractors to haul grain to market.

It's not closer, but one just like the one in your avatar showed up down the street from my shop this week. It's a clean old truck parked at a towing service out by the street for sale.

Order filled. 8V71 recently rebuilt. It had a dump bed and the frame has been stretched. The guy built the engine and passed away.

Looks very restore-able.

Thanks for the pictures.

But as you have mentioned, I wish it was closer, lol.

Someone in your area needs to jump on it.

Maybe we will see it restored someday on these boards.

Re: GM Semis

It literally was 2 4 speed Hydramatics, one on top of the other. Not terribly successful, the Twin Hydramatic was replaced by the first Allison truck automatics in the late 50's. And there is still a Ralph's on the corner of 3rd. and Vermont.

Re: GM Semis

It's amazing on the availability and talk of Automatics in the 50's. Some may remember my story in the mid '70's when the mechanic at our yard told me that Autos are on the way and we could possibly get some in the near future. I was driving a 10-Speed RR at the time and I told him that if they ever buy me an Automatic, that will be the day I quit. I was serious and I believe he knew I was.

You just can't make beautiful sounds with an automatic.

I was sitting out by the street eating lunch last week, and a fleet truck took off at the stop light down the hill. That truck sounded like it was over revved by the time it shifted, then sounded smothered after it shifted.

Then a couple of bull haulers came by making the stacks sing.

In the early 70's I worked at a gas station on Highway 21 at a busy intersection and the city of Charlotte,NC had IH Cargostar trash trucks with Detroits and Allisons in them. That's exactly how they sounded. They would wind up until they sounded as if they should have blown up 1000 RPMs ago and then after they shifted, sounded like they were 1000 RPMs to low. You knew when they were around.
At the same time Lance Cracker Co. had GMC cracker boxes with Detroits and Road Rangers. Much better sound listening to those guys row thru the gears.

Great photo KQQL IT. Another rig with aluminum wheels on fronts only, seems to be the way it was done before power steering. Most didn't have front brakes, assuming water tank was to cool the tractor and trailer brakes?

Aluminum wheels ran truer is what I believe I've heard people say
