Nothing better then sitting on the sofa with your morning cup of coffee in hand, starring at the coffee table, which is covered with balled up wire, zip ties, shrink tubing, wire loom, Prius, Volt, BMW, Tesla assorted electrical shocky things, misc HF tools.... and just smiling!

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
so Mike seems super nice and took the time to talk to me and said that the OEM parts I bought off eBay are less likely to be noisy unlike the much lower gear ratio after market ones he sells, so we agreed to give these a try
I only paid $120 for mine with tax and shipping on eBay, where as he wanted $400 for his 5.18s or something low ratio like that, I think it would have been fun to try those, but oh well this place is only like 5 miles from my house, so that's a bonus! Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
Now I have some questions. What is your reason for the change? Is it now similar to the gearing the motors had in their original vehicle? What effect will this have on range? Is there an optimal motor RPM?
You do a great job of explaining things on this build so I can't wait to learn about this part too. |

yes this was to match the gearing of the 2018 Lexus GS450h, I crunched those numbers a while back (so please don't make me do it again, I'll try to find the link to that post on the EV forum) and it seems like 4.11 with my tire combo will match that car but also I always wanted to try 4.11s even when the vehicle was a gasser, and I think these motors inside of this Lexus transmission can spin up north of 15,000 RPM so they won't even bat an eye on this I talked to Mike the tech in the shop who did the rear end upgrade and he looked at my drive shaft and said it would handle the 5.38 aftermarket gear set if I wanted to go that low in the gear ratio (forgive me I get so confused with the high numbers vs low gear ratios that I couldn't tell you what's low gear or high gear, etc, ha ha still learning that stuff) ""Tall" gears and "short" gears are referring to the gear ratios. Tall (high) gears have LOWER numerical numbers such as 2.79, 2.90, 3.00, 3.25. Short (low) gears have HIGHER numerical numbers, such as 4.11, 4.30, 4.56, 4.88, 5.13, 5.36, etc. In simple terms, the numbers mean how many turns of the drive shaft to one turn of the rear wheel." not sure how this will effect range, but it will effect Top Speed, something I ought to should test every year I forget what tire size I am running so I will post it here 215/65 R17 and here's what my buddy did for us to show the RPM difference assuming I had a 27" tire but that's ok Last edited by Gregski; 08-15-2024 at 10:02 AM. |

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
man still no luck charging at the blink stations
neither one of these worked, not the one in front of McDonald's and not the one across the parking lot, for obvious reasons Last edited by Gregski; 08-18-2024 at 10:27 AM. |

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
yes, the first charge station they said was broken on their end and although they tried rebooting it, it never came up properly, they said they would need to send somebody out to service it, and the second one, well someone stole the plug off of of, I think I may try another station this weekend just for funsies

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
ha ha, he said he clocked me at 91 MPH with his [ahem] invisible radar gun, ha ha, I told him I was passing and was about to get back in the middle lane, and the guy was reasonable, he said I will write you up for 80 MPH in a 70 and I said "DEAL" !!! so Traffic School here I come, spending the money I saved on this battery pack in the process.

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
so about to do a teardown of the newer SP41 battery packs which are the same form factor as the SP06 but have 12 kWh capacity instead of the 9 kWh
BMW started making the SP41 in July of 2019 so if you are in the mood for one, hold out for these newer packs - you're welcome I would say expect to pay $150 per killer watt for these beauties, so roughly $1,800 per 12 kWh pack these days each one of those six modules is 65 volts !!! and weighs 27 pounds BMW PHEV SP06 vs SP41 Plug In Hybrid Battery Pack Comparison 330e, 530e, 740e, X5 . |

Re: My Dusty 71 GMCe Electruck
is there a range goal you are trying to hit? is 200 mi possible without getting too expensive?

we guestimate that by using the 3.5 miles per 1 kWh magic number, so 3.5 x 36 = 126 miles I will house 2 battery packs in the front aka in the engine or should I say motor bay, and the third under the bed aft of the rear axle, where some install a gas tank I plan on installing the second pack this fall, any weekend now |
