Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

Thanks mcbassin. Question for all: Painter suggests painting the steering column and wheel blue. I was thinking column blue and wheel black. Any opinions?

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

What did it look like before?

I did a quick search and I like the interiors that have a combo of 3 colors. One for the dash and door tops, another for the steering wheel or gauge cluster and another for the door panels and seats.

That being said, blue column and a black wheel would look great. I've got an affinity for wood wheels too, but not sure if that's in the trade space.

I've attached a couple examples

No, my vote is with black wheel and black column. Starts to get a mishmash with column shroud and indicator stalk being already black. Where do you stop.

Dash including instrument cluster is blue. Trans tunnel/console is blue. Door tops blue. Dash pad seats and door panels black.

Dash was originally faux wood grain panels. Wheel and column were black.

Don't forget to tie in a small bit of that red stripe from the exterior.

Funny AJ, I also looked at the 66ish vette dash while researching this. Those other two are one rare and one very rare sunbeam. Thanks for posting them.

I do like classic wood steering wheels too. I'm leaning toward a blue column and black wheel. May change to a wood wheel later. Both will look good on a blue column I think.

Re: '66 Sunbeam Minx Project - F20C/6sp/4-link/Discs...

Just an observation for you to consider. I've seen several wheels over the last 15 years that have been painted. When they are newly painted they look good, but after a few years of use they all seem to wear through and show the molded color. Some have even peeled. Obviously some of this is due to the prep work, but all steering wheels will suffer from some wear. Eventually the paint will be warn off and you'll have black patches (assuming your wheel was originally black).

Personally, I like the steering column and wheel to match, unless it's a wood wheel. So I'd stick with black column and black wheel. Or, if you are going with a wood wheel, go with the blue column. Just my $0.02.

The car looks beautiful by the way.

I like the idea of going black on the column and wheel. Just a little contrast.

Good input! I agree about the paint wear. Wheel was black on black plastic so I'll stick with it. Gotta have some contrast! But I'm going blue on the column.

Contrast is good. Was a tough call.

Yes I rebuilt them and installed a stepper motor in the speedo from an acura RSX cluster. Tach bezel was modded to fit the dolphin unit and a custom lense cut.

Hey Frizzle, how's the project coming? Or have you been doing some other cool things in other parts of the world again?

Hey guys. Almost done now with a three month work project that has consumed me. Only progress since January has been some sound deadener. Can't wait to get back on this!
