6.2 in a 71?

Hello all. I was wondering how difficult it would be to put a 6.2L diesel in a 71 c10 in place of the 250 6cyl? with the 3 on the tree. I'd like to keep the trans but am just weighing different engine options. Thanks!

Re: 6.2 in a 71?

In my personal experience, that would be taking two steps back. I have been working on 6.2's and 6.5's for about ten years now, and I would not recommend these motors for anything but a boat anchor. You will have about the same power from the six as well, maybe even more! I am sure there are some die hard 6.2 fans out there that will disagree, but that is my opinion. Is the six-banger running? Or in rebuildable condition? I would probably go that route, or a crate 350.

Re: 6.2 in a 71?

An old oil burner wouldn't be too bad to put in. I'm not sure if chevy motor mounts will work, though. You could always find mounts out of a 80's era truck with a 6.2. The 6.2's a real simple motors. Air, fuel, and a good glowplug controler is about all they take to run. I'mnot sure on the trans hookup, but you could get these in the early 80's with a four speed, so you should be able to figure something out. If you don't beat on 'em, they run forever and get decent fuel mileage. Beware of one thing, though- leaks-o-plenty. Here's a good page that I used to use a lot when I was starting out as a mechanic.

You have to take one thing into consideration,BluTrukker, the 6.2's and 6.5's that we work on get the crap beat out of them. Come on man, you know how these thing get treated! I just love it when they get in a cold hummer in the winter and redline it to get warm!

Your right, there is no better person to test for durability than a soldier. A troop can tear up an anvil with a toothpick! Give a troop 2 steel ball bearings, and he will break one and lose the other!

Re: 6.2 in a 71?

would the clutch assembly bolt up to the 6.2 flywheel? and would the 6.2 bolt up to the trans?

Re: 6.2 in a 71?

The truck is a shortbed stepside, so the 6.2 shouldn't have any problems getting that to move, right?

Re: 6.2 in a 71?

It will move it just fine. These motors are full of torque, not much horsepower. Good for pulling, not much speed.

I am not sure what kind of flywheel/clutch combo you would need. Just guessing something mid 80's?

Re: 6.2 in a 71?

One thing I forgot-6.2's and 6.5's use the BOP bolt pattern since it was originally derived from an Olds engine. To bolt up to your chevy trans, you would need an adapter, which is no big deal. Lots of company's make them, and they are only about an 1/8 inch wide.

This is not correct. The 5.7 diesel was derived from the olds. A 6.2 most definitely wasn't. It has a standard chevy bellhousing pattern.

Re: 6.2 in a 71?

The 6.2's were designed by Detroit for GM, and are very fuel effecient if the injection pump and injectors are in good shape. Among many others I've, I have a '84 K1500 with 330,000 on the clock and the engine has never been out of the truck. It has went through (2) 700R4's, a radiator, 1 starter, 1 injection pump, and a rearend in the but still runs good. It uses a quart between oil changes, and still averages over 20 mpg.

Re: 6.2 in a 71?

Yes,they bolt right in.

I got 275,000 out of this`84 (w/Banks Stinger kit) before selling it to friend up home.He ran it until about 5 years ago when it rusted away. It`s real hard on sheetmetal up there with 120" of snowfall average. He farms and lugged dbl hay wagons around among other things. He sold it to a guy that was going to put another body on it...
