SM465 parts wanted

Anyone have a parts SM465 laying around? I'm looking for the threaded collar and retaining plate located on the output shaft. These pieces are only found on an SM465 out of a 4x4 and are discontinued through GM.

Also, after tearing mine down to do an overall general inspection before it goes into my truck, I noticed that the coating on the shift rails has just started to wear off in some places. No metal wear at all. I'm told that these were coated new to help prevent chatter but shouldn't affect it's ability to operate correctly. Anyone have any input or experience with this?

Also, after thoroghly inspecting everything on this trans, I notice that there is a small section of the rear casting that is missing at the rear output bearing opening. This is still well within the area that the adpater will cover and I see no reason for it to have any affect on the operation of this tranny (I will take pics and post them here tomorrow or the next day). I also noticed two small pieces of metal debris in the bottom of the case (about the size of the tip of a pencil). I have looked over every gear and syncro, shafts included, and everything looks great. No wear, no unusuall marks, it all looks great and everything rotates with ease. Has anyone else opened a tranny or differential case to find small metal debris but had no ill affect because of it? Just trying to be cautious before I stuff this heavy MOFO into my truck. I don't feel like pulling it out anytime soon after I install it.

Thanks for your thoughts...............
Rob

You say that your looking for the threaded collar and retaining plate located on the output shaft, can you take pictures of it to show me what I'm looking for as I have to SM465 sitting around here that are good for parts.

The metal debris could be from a clip that holds a shaft in place on the shifter part of the cover. If this shaft decides to slide out the tranny will only have granny low & 2nd. You won't be able to get any gear to the right side. ( 3, 4 & R ) If it slides out you'll have to drain the grease & go in thru the pto cover to slide that shaft back in so you can get the cover off. As you already know, to get the cover off it has to be half way into reverse. I finally welded the clip on. ......Zoomy/Pappy

If Kruzer69 doesn't have what you are needing, try pm'ing member gregsplace, seems he may have a few 465's sitting around - he has gobs of parts.

I was having trouble getting my top cover off then got the tranny stuck so I couldn't work the gear shifter to get it half way in reverse - ended up taking it to a tranny shop for help and the guy did a quick inspection and found a couple small problems (one being the clip that Zoomy was mentioning) and he fixed me up for very cheap. Sure might not be a bad idea to run yours up to shop while it is out - just to verify there are no other little problems.

Kruzer69, here's a pic of the parts I'm looking for. Threaded collar and retaining washer.

Yukon, good idea, I probably should have someone look it over before putting it back together. I didn't have any problems getting the top plate off and everything seems to be in fine shape, never hurts to get an expert opinion on things though.

Oh yeh, here's a pic of the hole in the case at the rear output bearing. I can't see where this is going to affect anything but any ideas or opinions about this are appreciated. Hope the pic is clear enough to show what I'm looking at.

Wonder what would have caused the hole in that one pic. Very odd.

In looking at the pic of the gears it looks like a small chip is missing from the largest gear (the one farthest to the right) on the inner edge of the tooth that is the 5th one down from the top of the pic. Is this the size of the chip(s) you found ? Overall it looks very clean and not abused..........Zoomy/Pappy

I agree, it is very odd. I would imagine someone had some problems with this trans at one time then rebuilt or had the problem fixed. That back gear sits so close to the back of the case, I can't even imagine that a gear would have broke, then wedged a pice back there and broke the case in that one small spot. It just seems odd to me. I've thoroughly looked the case over and that is the only defect I see. No cracks or wear anywhere else on the case. If it didn't look so much like a broken piece missing, I would almost guess maybe a casting flaw when it was made. I sure would love to hear other opinions about this. For all I know, someone may have intensionally broke the case there to let gear oil run back to keep the coupler from drying out like others have said tend to happen. It's got me curious!

Zoomy, I have looked over all those teeth and they are all there, no chips in any of them. I see what you are looking at and it is just gear oil residue, like found on some of the other gears in that pic. It just looks like a small piece missing from the way that pic was taken. The two small pieces I found in the bottom of the case were smaller than that and they were on the front part of the case. There is a small dividing wall cast into the case that runs right down the middle and the debris was found on the front half, just about under the second gear back from the front. Hope I explained that right, not trying to confuse you.

Haven't heard of that issue, on my adapter, there is a hole in the bottom of the adapter between the holes that the crossmember bolts to that would let any oil that got into the adapter flow right out - so at least for my adapter (for a Rockwell and CH465) that wouldn't do much good.

Rebuilt SM465/NP205 for sale
SM465 / NP205 combo for sale
I have an SM465 and a matching NP205 for sale. They were both rebuilt last year, but never re-installed. The T-case has all the internal work for a twinstick allready done but can still run the single shifter. "$350 Both Only" I will be heading to Texas from Green Bay, WI in a little over a week, so it'd be possible to drop it off along the way.

Here are lots of pics, hopefully I won't go over my bandwidth limit.
