X Pipe Installed Today

I just got back from exhaust specialties, great shop. They installed an X pipe on the '68 for me. They did a great job, and it sounds great. Really evened out the exhaust tone, (it was too rattle-y at higher RPM's) and it actually improved acceleration stop light to stop light. Heres some pics.

hmmm. i had an X pipe on my '70, but I don't have one on my '69.

the '69 is going in for exhaust in a week or so... i wasn't planning on getting an X pipe, because my idle is fine and acceleration is crazy fine but maybe I will, now that I've seen how sexy the non-rusted X can be!

I've got a couple of questions for you if you don't mind. First off what is the Yenko sc on the side of your truck? Is it some special package that was offered back in the day? Also, and I feel dumb to ask this but, what exactly does an X-pipe do for you as far as performance is concerned? Does equalizing the exhaust help throttle response, gas mileage, or anything else?

The Yenko stripes are meant for an early camaro/chevelle/nova. The YSC stands for Yenko Super Cars. They were a dealership in the heyday of the muscle car wars who swapped the aluminum ZL1 427's into camaros and such. Real Yenko cars today are worth TONS of money. I just love the way the stripes look, and tried to duplicate it on my truck. Even though I dont have a big block =(

Someone will have more info, but the X pipe, or H pipe, just equalizes the exhaust flow, smoothing out the sound and powerband

Thats for a camaro and he added to his truck.

Negative was not offered on the trucks.

The X Pipe improves performance by bringing the two cylinder banks together. This results in what is known as "exhaust gas scavenging." Instead of two separate banks of cylinders working independently, an X Pipe creates a "crossover" effect, allowing the exhaust pulse from the firing of one bank to create a vacuum in the other bank. This means that the engine spends less effort trying to "push" out exhaust gas of one side vacuum created on the other side will literally pull it out. It also means that when you install a X pipe, your engine will have more horsepower available to propel the vehicle.

this is NOT my experience.
I have had a fully welded 2.5" dual exhaust with X-pipe behind a warmed 350.

FULL pop & bang when decell or decline in a low gear.

Wow, that sucks. All the cars I've had that I run them on it gives a little more top end and gets rid of the popping and backfiring. I've run them on my 79 T/A and both my 97 Camaro and Trans Am. I'm planning on running one on my project truck too. Wonder why yours does?

That popping is harmless, although it can be annoying. On carb equiped engines you would actually have to effectively de-tune to eliminate the noise. When an engine over-runs (high rmp, closed throttle) it tends to run rich as there is tremendous vacuum drawing fuel from idle/primary circuits. In addition to this, some exhaust gas is 'sucked' back into the cylinder making things a little worse. Unburnt fuel then exits and burns in the exaust pipe creating a pop. On EFI equiped engines, you can program the cpu to optimize AFR during decel. A real lean condition can also cause decel popping.

I don't mean for you to think that mine popped like it was out of time or something... just normal engine braking noises. AND.... this has only been in manual tranny trucks.

ulakovic22, maybe mine have popped with and without Xpipe because I have pretty built engines... always at least .30 over with bumped compression. always running Edel performance carbs (versus fuel economy carbs). and always have my carb and timing proffessionally tuned.

I've got a question about the location of the "X" how will that affect the performance? I've heard the best place is where the paint stops burning off where it should go.
Is there any truth to this? I like his location and certainly makes installation easier.

I'm no technical expert, but I would assume that closer to the headers is best. All my x's have run about 24 inches down from the collectors, but that is because of packaging constraints in an F-body. As velocity slows down the farther away from the headers I would guess that the scavenging effect would lessen, but I don't know, it just sounds good to me Look up a guy by the name of David Vizard.

It's not a cut & dry situation. If you put it under the transmission it makes it hard to remove the transmission oil pan.
Also makes me wonder what ill affects having all that heat under the transmissions oil pan.
