Battery Disconnect

I am looking to add a battery disconnect (that I do not have to go under the hood to disconnect) I was thinking of adding the

Painless Performance Remote Master Disconnect Kits 30206.
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/PRF-30206

Has anyone installed one of these? How did it work out?

Thanks

Re: Battery Disconnect

I use the underhood one but you could buy all of those pieces for half that price. It looks simple enough.

I have looked to piece it together but a decent Latching Solenoid is around $60-$70 by itself so you end up paying about the same with shipping.

NAPA --ST81--about 35.00 minus a discount if you have an account
https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/ECHST81

Just installed one in my Toyota over the weekend. I had to make new battery cables anyways. Still have to wire in the button somewhere. It doesn't disconnect the battery completely, but isolates the starter to a possible hidden switch.

You don't need a latching solenoid. That's a Ford starter solenoid. You need a push on/push off SPST switch or even just a SPST toggle switch.

Re: Battery Disconnect

Had my local electronics guy that does stereo and remote starter installs put a kill switch in my 72. No buttons to push or any special wiring showing. Just do something and you can start the truck and if u don't do it the truck will never start.

Its my understanding that using a regular solenoid will have a small drain on the battery where a latching solenoid will not because it uses a magnet. possible I misunderstood. At times my truck sits for months without starting because I travel alot for work. I typically just disconnect the battery but was looking for something that did not require going under the hood in case my wife or son need to move it while I am away.

I am not looking for a "kill switch" my MSD Box already has one. I am looking for a Battery Disconnect similar to what would be on a RV Motorhome.

Looks like a great product, I'm probably ordering one today. Painless makes good stuff.

There is a 30204 model available on Amazon I will check it out..

Re: Battery Disconnect

I put one of these on the side of my battery tray.
https://www.autozone.com/starting-ch...-150/32369_0_0

Ran battery cable to a binding post. From binding post I ran to starter and to the 150a circuit breaker. I then connected all accessories and the factory fuseable link to the switched side of the breaker.

I discovered after doing this, my LS swap harness picks up power at the starter. At least I can quickly disconnect power to all of the factory wiring and other accessories. Just not the starter and engine computer.

A regular ford type solenoid would not have current draw when not energized, but requires 8-10 Amps to energize. That means an extra 10 Amp draw on the charging system all the time you are driving.

Not using a latching solenoid would be a bad idea.

Re: Battery Disconnect

I wired in a Moroso 74102 battery disconnect switch. Very heavy duty. I mounted in on the front frame rail where I can easily reach it by reaching under the truck, but it's not obvious to passers by.

When the switch is in the off position the circuit will be open, the solenoid will be withdrawn and there is absolutely no current drain.

Re: Battery Disconnect

You don't want to use the common Ford starter solenoid for a remote disconnect. The coil windings are not rated for continuous operation. Continuous duty rated solenoids are often referred to as golf cart relays. The look similar but are made differently. Cole Hersee is a good choice for them.

Re: Battery Disconnect

Why over think this ? What about just a switch in-line to the distributor ? Mount it in a place underneath the dash….

All of my vehicles are like this.

Unfortunately, it's not on purpose and I don't always know what the "something" is.

Correct. You absolutely want a continuous duty solenoid not a starter one.

I'm not a big fan of all your power going through a solenoid all the time. I would much rather have a disconnect like the MOROSO one shown which is probably a rebranded Cole Hersee. A 2484-16 that you can buy on Amazon for $40 will handle 800A surge (for starting) and 175A continuous. M28402 is marine grade and will withstand outdoor mounting and a few more amps. It's like $80 on Amazon. The marine ones at least are still made in USA. Mount it through a fenderwell if you don't want to open the hood, but I would just mount it underhood.

i understand what you are trying to do and i think a disconnect on frame rail would work.
just like 540ChevyC20 did

Re: Battery Disconnect

OP Above suggestions may or may not cover your need as you have indicated in subsequent post. What is the need for battery disconnect? Do you have an untraceable draw? Security? Good disconnects used on race cars do fine and have a second circuit to ground the alternator for protection should the switch be opened while engine is running. This avoids alternator diode damage while engine runs down and alternator stops spinning. https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/gr...pID=SWITCHBATT

The main reason for the battery disconnect is because I do not want to leave the battery connected for the long periods that the truck sits unused. I am wanting something that does not require going under the hood in case my wife needs to move the truck while I am away.

I have had many different race cars and am well aware of all the different switches that have been suggested. Those switches just do not fit the need that I am looking for.

I posted the Painless Performance Remote Master Disconnect Kits 30206 as it seemed to be what I was looking for and was curious if anyone had used it before.
