Why should I upgrade rear end differential??

Hey guys, I have a 69 c10 torn down to the frame, freshly sandblasted and painted. It has the original back end no leafs and I’m wondering if I should just clean and paint it or replace it off another truck or purchase one? It’s not going to be a daily driver but it won’t be a show car either, any ideas?

There is no reason to change it.

Re: Why should I upgrade rear end differential??

What's your goal? Is the truck getting more horsepower, or staying mostly stock? How do you plan to drive it, and do you know what the current rear end ratio is?

If you plan to run it hard, you might want to consider upgrading to a limited-slip and/or changing the gear ratio. But if you are leaving it mostly stock and driving it only occasionally, the stock 12 bolt rear end is very stout.

Leave it or rebuild it. A nicely built 12 truck is good for 500+ hp.

If your shooting for the stars or running big tires there is little that cant be done to it to survive most situations

This right here, unless you're going to all out drag the 12 bolt can be set up to handle pretty much anything you throw at it. I'd figure out what gears you have in it and then decide what you want to do with the truck and that will help if you should do limited slip, change gearing etc...

Re: Why should I upgrade rear end differential??

The only thing you need to change is the gear oil. These are great rear ends.

Yea, I would change the fluid, inspect for wear and leave it if possible. These trucks were built on a pretty solid foundation or platform.

That is, until the EPA got involved which really does not affect them until 74.
